Sad. Why do coaches need agents in the first place? However, sometimes staying in-house is better, particularly at insular schools like Penn State. (Yes, this is JoePa's last home game.)

For a coach about to retire in the next year or two, I can see naming a successor. But this is getting about as silly as basketball coaches making offers to 8th graders. I am a big Will Muschamp fan. We share 2 alma maters after all, but what if his defenses start to tank? What if some other "hot" coach comes along? If Texas had wanted to keep him, then let them pay him the $900K.

I am waiting for Chris Petersen to name his successor!

Leach won't leave Tech for Auburn. If he does leave, it'll be for the greener (orange) pastures of Tennessee with their enormous stadium and budget. He can probably get close to 4 million from UT. Plus, he won't have Saban at his door step. Auburn should look at Lane Kiffin or Chris Petersen.

Mike Leach, We want you at AUBURN UNIVERSITY. You have proven yourself as the most resourceful coach in division one football and we need you. Only one thing, we will pay you VERY WELL, but we will never use buy out clauses again. Those clauses benefit no one except coaches that can't cut it. You can exit anytime you want for free because if you don't want to be here then you are free to go and if we thing you aren't fitting in, same thing. Buy out clauses take away the integrity and dignity of both parties and make for unnecessary roadblocks when it is time for change. But Coach Leach, I think you are in it for the love of the game and the right reasons, and that is why we need each other. Please give us a chance?

Who is on deck to take over and repair the great powerhouse here in Auburn? Sexton will be hard pressed but maybe some high school may want CTT. Seriously though, the 6 mill buyout was the dumbest document ever signed in division one football. Tub should have to pay the University for having to get someone who can actually coach and bring back the respect that the AU family deserves. All I can say is that if Tuberville takes the 6 mill, he has ZERO class. He knows the firing is 100% his fault not the University's. The class act thing to do would be for him to sign the check back over to Auburn University, along with a written apology for being a complete idiot.

Will Muschamp will one day succeed Mack Brown at Texas.
AP

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher laughed Thursday as he pondered the deal his buddy Will Muschamp got at Texas this week. Fisher, FSU's head-coach-in-waiting, signed a deal last year that probably served as a template for the one Muschamp received when he agreed to eventually succeed Mack Brown. The only difference? Fisher makes $625,000. Muschamp will make $900,000 next year.

"I'm like the starter guy," Fisher joked. "They get better as they go."

A reporter asked Fisher if Fisher's agent had contacted Muschamp's agent to compare notes. Fisher smiled. "It's the same agent," he said.

That's right. Jimmy Sexton, agent to the supercoaches, has added another line to his resume: agent to the coaches-in-waiting. Sexton, already one of the most powerful figures in college football, has added another selling point for his services. If you're an up-and-coming assistant and you sign with him, he may lock you into a head-coaching gig at a premium program.

Sexton -- who also counts among his clients Bill Parcells, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Houston Nutt, Butch Davis, Lane Kiffin (and his dad, Tampa Bay Bucs defensive coordinator Monte), Tommy Tuberville, Frank Beamer and Mike Gundy -- is the man who negotiated Saban's megadeal at Alabama. Now, it seems likely he'll represent the first $1 million college assistant.

After news of Muschamp's deal broke, Birmingham News columnist Kevin Scarbinsky asked Saban what he thought of the coach-in-waiting idea. "That's the way I'd like for it to be," Saban told Scarbinsky. "That's what I'd like to happen. Someday. But you've got to have the right person and have everybody in agreement on it."

Later, News Alabama beat writer Ian Rapoport floated one potential name: Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Any idea which agent represents Steele?

His name is Jimmy Sexton.
