NEW ORLEANS -- Alabama's fans have given the Crescent City more houndstooth than the 1930s and "Roll Tide" has become the most uttered phrase on Bourbon Street that isn't rewarded with beads. But there are, in fact, Utah fans in the Big Easy.

Sticking out among a section of Crimson Tide tailgaters outside the Superdome were a pair of Utah flags perched atop a mobile home -- a rented mobile home that 10 Utes fans, including Spencer Toone and Justin Hansen (members of Utah's 2004 Fiesta Bowl team), drove 38 hours from Salt Lake City. They arrived at 10 a.m. on game day after a 38-hour drive (the trip itself is 36 hours, but they suffered a blown tire two hours into the trip).

"We had to come and see the Utes play," Trent Johnson said.

The Utah flags attracted the attention of Zach Hatch, Dan Owen, Kyle Thomas and Tyce Welling, who had painted "U-T-A-H" across their chests. The quartet traveled the 1,900 miles on a school-sponsored charter bus and Welling said it didn't take long for him to come to what could be the biggest understatement of the young New Year.
</intro>

Well, Trojan Horse, if you'd been following the posts in the beginning, I was actually showing Dirty Underpants that his/her statement could easily be switched. As far as scheduling OOC, I do agree that USC ensure that it does not schedule Div. II teams, but that doesn't mean that they don't schedule OOC cupcakes. Don't get the two twisted. To say that USC beat Auburn a YEAR BEFORE they went undefeated proves what? LMAO.

USC is a very good team that I do not underestimate, but the way Underpants go about it is extremely annoying and unfounded. They are very capable of beating the best team in the SEC and vice versa. However, we won't know that because they won't play the best team in the SEC. So Arkansas had a good year that year...whoopty doo. They are not consistently a top SEC team. Play Florida, Alabama, LSU, even Auburn (and yes, I know you beat them the year before they went undefeated..lol) on a consistent basis and then after a few games, then pass judgement. You don't get a pass by playing our down teams in their down years, no more than the SEC get credit for beating Stanford or any team in Washington.

So I'm not talking smack about USC moreso than I am talking smack about comments about USC from some of its delusional fans.

Hey Sandy: "The reason USC doesn't schedule Utah is because they don't put non-BCS cupcakes on their schedule, and more years than not, Utah and the rest of that conference are just that."

UVA on the road (5-7), OSU at home (give me any team of substance that OSU has beaten in the last 3 years) and ND at home (no comment needed, ND is horrible). So you argument is that SC only schedules BCS cupcakes? In your other posts you imply that Utah had the easier schedule. How is that so if the MWC went 7-1 against the Pac-10, and Utah went undefeated and USC didn't? Since the 2008 RECORD shows that the MWC is better than the Pac-10, then Utah played a harder schedule week in and week out than SC. In addition, Utah beat the only team that SC lost to. If we all agree that the entire season is a playoff, because we have no real playoff, then you have no argument to stand on in defense of SC. SC is a great team, but don't deserve to ranked higher than Utah.

Let's see Virginia is in a BCS conference, Utah isn't and almost EVERYONE on Utah's schedule is a a non-BCS legit cupcake, are you on drugs? I guess you must be because you include Ohio St. as a cupcake. They're in the freakin BCS Fiesta Bowl you damn dummy and they played in the National Championship game the last two seasons, and they are the 2nd winningest program of the last 7 years (2nd only to USC).

Utah played the 93rd most difficult schedule and USC played the 32nd most difficult, jabronie you need to do some research. The Pac-10 is 5-0 in Bowl games and Arizona destroyed your 2nd best team BYU. Utah played 10 non-BCS conference cupcakes, USC played 13 BCS opponents.

USC beat a conference champion and the game was over in the 2nd quarter. Utah didn't. Utah struggled with the 2nd best team in a crappy conference up until the final minutes of the game. I mean Utah is good, but their accomplishments and opponents were far inferior to USC's.

Utah had a good season. It was cool to hear their fans shout "we're number 1" -- it certainly sounded loud enough. Since I don't like the Fox broadcast team very much, I only saw highlights from the game, but it looked like Utah easily outplayed the Tide from what I could see. But I think this says more about (a) the SEC being over-rated, if you assume Alabama is their second best team; and (b) Alabama being being over-ranked (I mean, falling to number 4? Really? -- Fairness clearly dictated that, for example, at the Sugar Bowl, Utah would have been the higher ranked team, not the Tide).

I think Utah deserves to be considered for a championship this year but won't -- even with the AP -- because they would still have needed to knock off the winner of the Florida / Sooner's match and/or USC for that. Even then, the question is whom would they play? We're talking 14, or 15 games, if we had a playoff.

The NCAA should award teams with undefeated systems (they can start with this year) and force the BCS commissioners to tweak their system more [personally, I'd get rid of it, but that's not going to happen.]

The D-1 "national championship" is a myth without a playoff but the Utes have the best case to be #1 given they way they finished- undefeated and on top of their game.
Okay, I know that I just said that we should be talking about USC on this board - but this is too much! An SEC guy talking smack about USC's out of conference schedule? The years that USC had Auburn - they were the favorite to win the SEC with Caddy Williams in the backfield. Arkansas had McFadden and ended the year in a BCS game (if I remember correctly). Ohio St was #2 or #3 when they came into USC this year and they ended the year 10-2 (only losing to two teams in the top 10). SEC teams are notorious for scheduling division 2 teams for their non-conference warm ups. I'm sorry, but nobody here has a right to talk smack about really most PAC-10 non-conference games, because most PAC-10 schools schedule tough non-conference games (with the exception of Oregon).

USC will end the year beating the following top 25 ranked teams: Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State. Cal will likely end the year in the top 25 after their bowl win and AZ may be ranked after beating BYU (ranked 17 in the AP).

I am not going to be one of those guys saying that USC deserves to be in the NC, but I will be one of those guys who responds to dumb posts such as this one. We (USC) lost a game that defined the rest of our season. We need to learn from this for future seasons. If you want to be in the NC game, than you absolutely must win all of your games and not leave it up to pollsters.

"It's a lot different than Salt Lake City," said Welling.

Despite their body art, the group said Alabama fans had been surprisingly tame. "We've been bigger d**** than them," Owen said.

Tame? Or are Alabama fans just not that threatened by the undefeated champions of the Mountain West? Toone, a former outside linebacker who now works in real estate, said that suits the Utes just fine.

"I think Utah thrives on the underdog role," he said.

It would likely take a perfect game from the Utes to knock off a team that was a game away from playing for the national title. Read into it what you will, but Utah's fans committed what could be a bad omen: as Hatch, Owen, Thomas and Welling posed for a picture, I paused for a minute, looking at the camera. They had spelled "H-A-U-T." After I alerted them of this, they rearranged and took the picture above. The Utes won't get any second chances tonight.
