to their second undefeated season in five years.
With a shocking 31-17 win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Utah improved to 13-0 and will officially finish the season as the only undefeated team in America.
Although most pundits predicted that Utah would wilt against a physical Alabama squad, the Utes controlled the game from the opening kickoff. They quickly jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, scoring on their first three possessions. Although Alabama charged back to close the gap to 21-17, Utah scored the games final 10 points to ice the astounding victory.
This was no fluke -- the Utes unquestionably outplayed the mighty Crimson Tide, outgaining them 349-208 in total yards. Senior QB Brian Johnson led the way on offense, throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns, but Utah's defense was the story of the game. The Utes sacked 'Bama QB John Parker Wilson eight times and forced three turnovers.
This caps off an unbelievable campaign for Kyle Whittingham's team. Utah kicked off the season with an upset win over Michigan in the Big House -- though that win sure lost its luster as the season went on -- and went on to beat Oregon State, TCU and BYU en route to taking home the Mountain West championship. Add in a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama -- which held down the No. 1 ranking for all of November -- and you're looking at an extremely impressive résumé.
So, the question is, where should the Utes end up in the final poll? Whittingham offered his two cents in the postgame celebration.
"Hey, I know what I'm voting us, I'm voting us No. 1 -- end of story," Whittingham told FOX's Chris Myers.
So, where would you rank the Utes? Seeing as they're the only undefeated team in America, do they deserve the No. 1 spot? Or should that be reserved for the winner of Florida-Oklahoma?
