J.P. Howell the second of the three lefties in the American bullpen, is in the game. He gives up a leadoff single to righty-hitting Kenji Johjima. Howell then gets his lefty-swinging Rays teammate Akinori Iwamura to fly to center, but lefty Munenori Kawasaki also singles, putting men on first and second for the top of the order.
Ichiro Suzuki forces Kawasaki at second on a nice play by Mark DeRosa and righty Hiroyuki Nakajima strikes out.
