The American bullpen is doing its part, but the offense has nine outs left. Top of the order due up.
The new pitcher for Japan is righty Masahiro Tanaka, who hasn't allowed a hit in the tournament. Tanaka has a windup like a wind up toy. He very slowly uncoils, then suddenly fires the pitch home. He starts the inning by striking out Brian Roberts, who has gone from hero to goat in this game. Derek Jeter grounds out for the third time in four at-bats.
Jimmy Rollins gets ahead 3-1, then triples into the right-field corner. He's 3-for-3 with a walk thus far.
Big at-bat for David Wright here. The U.S. needs to plate this run. First pitch is a curve called a strike. The next is a changeup taken for a ball low and inside. Wright then fouls off a 95 mph fastball away. Tanaka short-arms the 1-2 pitch, bouncing it in front of the plate, but Wright was fooled and swings anyway, striking out and stranding Rollins.
Six outs left for the USA.
