As expected, Japanese manager Tatsunori Hara has loaded his lineup with right-handed hitters in order to gain the advantage over left-handed Korean starter Jung Keun Bong. Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima, who has been Japan's leading hitter in this tournament, moves up to the cleanup spot, while Shuichi Murata's replacement Kenta Kurihara gets his first (and only) WBC start. Seiichi Uchikawa also returns to the lineup in place of Cubs center fielder Kosuke Fukudome.

Korea returns Bum Ho Lee to the lineup at third base. He is tied with teammate Tae Kyun Lee for the WBC lead in homers with three. Those two right-handed bats form a formidable heart of the order, sandwiching left-handed Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.
