Zambrano came off the 15-day disabled list from a shoulder strain with six spotless innings Friday night, leading Chicago to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. He allowed four hits while striking out five.
Zambrano is now 9-3 with a 2.96 ERA and is a strong candidate to be one of the starters for the NL in the All-Star game. He had, however, been 0-2 with a 5.75 ERA in his previous three starts.
The Cubs activated Zambrano from the 15-day disabled list in time to start Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
The right-handed pitcher left his start on June 18 against Tampa Bay because of pain in his right shoulder. Tests showed a minor strain. Zambrano took the loss in that game, allowing five runs - four earned - in 6.2 innings. Zambrano, who also missed a month in 2002 with a right elbow strain, is 8-3 with a 3.13 ERA.
