Trading Paul Konerko for Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Chone Figgins would be a horrible trade for the White Sox, and a horrible mistake.

Lets face it, the White Sox hitter are getting nothing but older. Their top 2 hitters in Konerko and Thome are 32 and 38 years old. They have to get some young guns out on the field. You can see they made an effort to do that with acquiring Swisher. As of now they have a pretty good line-up highlighted with Cabrera, Swisher, Dye, Thome, and Konerko.Fye, Konerko, and Thome are near the end of their career and their numbers will decline.

Their starting 2nd baseman is a 25 year old kid who has only played in 56 MLB games. Howie Kendrick would be a nice add for the Sox at their weak 2B position. Also, their 3B spot is also weak. Figgins can provide that and a top leadoff guy.

Santana gives them youth in the SP rotation or youth in the bullpen.

With the Konerko trade, their line-up would be filled with more speed and better average hitters. Sure, they lose Konerko but how long did they think they were gonna have him after this year? With Kendrick, Figgins, and Santana you get youth and less injuries

santana is awful. He was demoted to Triple A last year, and has a lifetime ERA of Over 4. Konerko Has averaged 39 HR and 105 RBI over the last 4 years. Who would play 1st. Figgins is a b grade player, whos only big upside is speed. HE is unlikely to be included in the trade. And Kendrick is a c grade player, with no great future. He is a nothing player. Plus Konerko is the spiritual leader and captain of the Sox, and keeps their chemistry up.

If Figgins is unlikely to be in the trade then dont put his name there. And if you did put his name there dont argue that it is unlikely. I didnt make the TD. YOU DID.

Ervin Santana did get demoted to AAA last year, but let me compare him to another player. Daniel Cabrera was demoted to AAA by the Orioles not to long ago. That forced him to play harder. He made it out of AAA and came back better than ever.

Konerko's power numbers have to stop sometime. There is no way he is going to hit 40 HRs per year in his late 30s. And if he does he is gonna retire before Santana, Figgins, and Kendrick does. The guy who would play first is Jim Thome. He is not a bad fielder at all.

Figgins only upside isnt just his speed. He had 146 hits in 115 games. He batted .330. So you cant say all he can do is run. Figgins had more hits than any player on the White Sox last year. He also stole more bases than any player on the White Sox. He did all this in only 115 games. Figgins batted way of .300. Not one White Sox batted .300.

Figgins is also very movable. He has played 3B, 2B, CF, LF, and RF. He can provide relief on a day off for Dye. Or play there if Dye gets traded.

The White Sox just got Swisher. They can now afford to trade Paul.

The Swisher trade was downright HORRIBLE for the white sox. And for you to say the Sox have a weak 3B you obviously don't know anything. 3B is loaded with Josh Fields, Joe Crede, and the endless utility players they now have.

GU, your argument was good except for this:

"Also, their 3B spot is also weak."

That's insane. The have Joe Crede AND Josh Fields at the position and desperately need to trade one of them as it is. 3B is probably their biggest strength right now.

This trade would be awesome for the White Sox, but no way the Angels would do it just for Konerko alone. It would be a steal for Chicago that would address virtually every need they still have AND free up some money.

As for who would play 1st base, either Swisher or Dye is the answer.

If Konerko is still around in May, he gains full no-trade protection by virtue of becoming a 5 and 10 guy. If Chicago is seriously interested in getting max return on him, they have to do it now.

"Plus Konerko is the spiritual leader and captain of the Sox, and keeps their chemistry up."

I got a chuckle out of that? Their spiritual leader? And perhaps you missed the entire season last year, but chemistry wasn't exactly at an all time high.
