Throwdown Masters Tourney Round 1: Who should the Dolphins Draft?

The Dolphins should draft Glenn Dorsey. The Dolphins already have Ronnie Brown who is 26 years old and is already in his 3rd season. Ronnie Brown was in the top 10 this year if not better. He was playing very well before he got hurt. Brown was forming into the elite back that the Dolphins needed. Playing in only 7 games and having 602 yards and 4 tds. Also had 39 receptions for 389 yards and a touchdown. The Dolphins need help on defensive rushin being the last team in the league in allowing the most rushing yards. The Dolphins could also use help in the sack department being 24th in the league. Dorsey can help in both of these stats. The Dolphins DT are very old. Kieth Taylor is 38 and Donnie Holliday is 32. The Dolphins should draft Glenn Dorsey. He would help the Dolphins team needs on defense and at DT.

Though there is no argument to deny that Dorsey would be the finest pick to replace an ailing and aging DT (either one), the fact of the matter is that the dolphins simply need more than just ONE high caliber, high intensity player. There are too many holes in this Miami team, on both sides of the line. I can't help but feel that Miami has no choice but to trade down if at all possible. The dolphins have two picks in the second round, but they need at least two in the first round to even begin to start rebuilding. Not even the Tuna himself can make a winning team out of what he currently has. If you trade down, and are still looking at a serious DT, which as you said, they need, then I suggest looking at So Cal's Sedrick Ellis. It's a small step down, but worth it if you have another pick to go along with it.

Another possibility would be to look at Chris Long. We all know how much faith Parcells puts in players who are 'immersed in the game', and this man's father was a ruthless player and a Hall of Famer and seems to maintain the same intensity.

Glenn Dorsey is the perfect fit fot the Dolphins. He is the ONE high caliber player the Doplhins need. Now yes the Dolphins need more than one high caliber player. Nobody said that they were going to turn around and be a winning team. Now you cant just bring in all rookies in order to try and do that. They are going to have to bring in some veterans from free agency.

The Dolphins arent looking to be a great team next year. Now sure they would love to come in and be a surprising team that makes it to the playoffs or has a winning record. Now that they are coming into the season looking to win more than 1 game this season they need the reputation of a 1st pick. They need someone to bring in the buzz and get everyone fired up in the organization. They need a franchise player that can be in the organization for a long time. Glenn Dorsey can do this. By the Dolphins drafting Dorsey it will bring positive attention to the team, something they need. Dorsey is the right move for the Dolphins. He can help the team needs of age at DT and the defense being last in the league against the rush. He can bring the hype and positive attention the team needs. Dolphins should draft Glenn Dorsey.

Well, you're right about one thing. The dolphins will need to bring in some free agents. But as far as 'hype and positive attention' doing anything for this team...well, I don't think so. First off, with hype comes expectation, and that's a never-win situation. If you do great, so what, you were expected to do great. If you don't perform to the highest of expectations in the NFL (which let's not kid ourselves here, is much different than college), then you are a bust. What about the dolphins players? Do you think that they are sitting around waiting for Dorsey, or any other draft pick to come and save them? I don't think so. Hype rarely brings good things to any player in the NFL. Usually it is quite the opposite (look at most of the threads on this site).

History of 'Hype'

Ryan Leaf: Drafted by Chargers in 1998 in the 1st round. 'Hyped'...Signed for 31.25 Million and threw 13 TD's and 33 INT's in 2 seasons...FAILURE!

Ki-Jana Carter: Drafted by Bengals in 1995 1st pick overall. 'Hyped'...Injured in first play of preseason....FAILURE!

Rick Mirer: Drafted 2nd overall by Seahawks. 'Hyped'...decent 1st season then 18 TD's&32 INT's over next 2 yrs...FAILURE!

First off the Dolphins really dont have huge expectations. They went 0-13. They won one game all season. What are peoples expectations going to be. Oh man they can win 2 games. It doesnt matter either every year a team is going to have expectations. It just depends on how high or low they are going to be.
You say that the NFL isnt that different from NCAA. Now you are definitely wrong there. Ask the players. They always say that the game is always in a fast pace. There are different schemes and plays for college and the NFL. They are both very different.
Now duh the Dolphins players arent waiting on Dorsey or any other player to come in and "save" them as you say. Duh they think they can get the job done and need no help. But the Dolphins obviously do need some help and need someone to save them.
Now I realize that hype does hurt players, that is being over hyped. It can help. Now you list all the first round picks that failed and had hype and positive attention. Here are some that have proven they can handle the hype and show they can turn a organization around and or help the team. Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman, John Elway, Mario Williams, and Carson Palmer are just a few.

Who said that Dorsey wouldn't help them? I said that they hype the comes along with Dorsey, or any other first rounder makes no difference. Hype seemed to be the saving grace that you were basing your second argument on. I am saying that anything can happen to any player. Dorsey could break a leg in his first season and be less than productive for the rest of his career. Now, I understand that ANY player takes that risk, but when you need as much help as the dolphins do, it's too big of a risk to put all of your eggs in one basket. Almost any other team in the NFL this year could afford to jump all over a first round pick and be happy with that. The dolphins need more than one 'superstar' at one position, if that's even what Dorsey turns out to be. They need at least two 1st round quality picks and at least 2 second round quality picks. As far as NCAA and NFL being the same. I can't agree with you there. Sure, it's fast paced, but these players are playing in a league where only a marginal % of players are NFL caliber. In the NFL, everyone (for the most part) is NFL caliber. The phins need more players for their money, and to get they then need to trade down.

They should draft no one. They ought to try and trade the pick. They need everything.

Who would be willing to trade up for the pick?

Report Offensive Comment

Well that's a problem. I know it probably won't happen, but you never know. The problem is, there is no true consensus #1 overall.

Report Offensive Comment

they need to trade it and get some more picks but that is why you have taylor for trade him he is getting old

Report Offensive Comment

plus dallas would probably do it heck parcells is in miami

Report Offensive Comment

Dallas might do it, Jerry Jones is an Arkansas guy. I can think of another Arkansas guy whos pretty talented coming out in this draft.

Hey,wassup Utesfan!

Report Offensive Comment

Dallas would unquestionably give up BOTH of their first rounders (theirs and the Browns) for the pick, but no freakin' way Miami accepts that in trade for the #1 overall. If they do, McFadden will be playing in Irving next year...and Marion Barber will continue to be a backup or traded for someone elses 1st rounder.

Report Offensive Comment

Do you all think that the answer at quarterback is John Beck or Cleo Lemon? I don't, that's why I'd take Andre Woodson.

Report Offensive Comment

Dolphins should trade the pick and get a couple of proven players at key positions and another pick. With that pick get a QB (Woodson is a good one, if available, I doubt Brennan would fit into the Parcells scheme) Teams willing to trade for the pick? Take just about anyone hurting on "D".....

Report Offensive Comment

Now yes the sound of getting 2 picks in the first round is great. But they will fall all the way to 22 and then maybe 30 or 28 (who knows) another late 1st round pick. They gotta stay with the #1 pick and pick Dorsey. He will help the Dolphins team needs at defensive tackle. Must I add he is a beast.

Report Offensive Comment

Draft a lineman (AKA Long for Mich.)

Report Offensive Comment

Its gonna be Dorsey. Miami would be villified not to get this guy especially after they screwed up last year by taking Ginn so high.

Report Offensive Comment

Jake Long... Or trade the pick for a couple late rounders...
