Jones has a good team at hawaii and would be taking over a 1-11 team.he would get worse players and have to rebuild a program but if he stays at hawaii he already has a good team that could make another run at a bcs bowl game.jones would be stupid to take over SMU and it could tarnish his coaching career.

While we all know it will be far from easy to rebuild an SMU team It is not coaching suicide. One thing is yea he has a good team there in Hawaii but he is losing his qb which is a huge part of there success over the past 4 years. Also yea SMU was 1-11 but if you can rebuild a team like that he is making the right move. They play in Conference USA!Not exactly high quailty football teams. He wants the challenge and he can be the guy to change it around. He has a greap reputation now because of building a good Hawaii team so all of a sudden it opens up more recruits to get some talent in there.

Not to mention he'll be making about $1,200,000 more at SMU. Which was a big factor.

sometimes you take a team to see what you are REALLY worth in ur career......
if he takes a 1-11 team and eventually at the end of that contract seems to build a lets say top 50 team...maybe crack the top 25 if he's miraculously lucky......
if you don't no hard feelings ya know? ur getting 2 mill a year at a place where it couldnt get much worse...what would YOU do?

What June Jones is trying to do here is mold his legacy as a builder as well as a coach. Remember, Jones looked like a dog when he was fired by the Atlanta Falcons after a 3-13 season in 1996. After taking over a Hawaii program that had gone an ignominioius 0-12 in 1998 and had lost EIGHTEEN STRAIGHT GAMES, Jones turned the program completely around with a 9-4 season, the greatest turnaround (based on record) in NCAA history. He took a perennial afterthought to six bowl games in nine years, including cracking the BCS in this year's Sugar Bowl, winning four of those contests. He won two WAC titles at Hawaii and finished twice on two other occasions. He leaves the Warriors with a 75-41 record...
If he can do the same at SMU, he will cement his legend as one of the greatest repairmen of distressed football programs in college football history... and, yes, an extra $1.2 million -- or, if you prefer, $300,000 over the raise Hawaii offered him to stay -- does help to draw one's attention toward a sleeping giant in the heart of Dallas...

Being fron Hawaii I have to say that I hate to see JJ leave but I do understand why. I do believe he will turn SMU into a top 20 team with the better resources and support he'll recieve their. It was too bad that Hawaii's AD Herman Frazier totally dropped the ball and lost JJ for us here (apparently their going to announce Fraziers resignation or firing tomorrow)
With that being said I'm voting for NYfan. JJ will be leaving a team that potetially could have gone 12-1 or 11-2 next year. Alot is being made of the fact that Colt Brennan is graduating but not many people realize how good Tyler Graunke is who actually beat out Brennan when they both arrived in Hawaii 3 years ago. I don't know if they can beat Florida in Gainsville but they can beat Oregon state and Cincinatti. If they run the table in the WAC they will have beaten a respectable Boise State team and an up and comming Fresno State, but again that point is moot now. We'll just have to sit back and see who replaces JJ.
Good luck JJ

No.
Pay attention. Hawaii is losing Brennan and its career receptions leader. Jones would have faced rebuilding whether he stayed or left. And his gripe was that the university didn't invest anything in the team. Poor facilities, limited recruiting opportunities- Jones was being offered more money, but no support. As a coach, he's going where he can make a bigger difference. I say good move.

June Jones runs the perfect offense to keep more Texas HS football players in state. Alot of HS's throughout the country are going to the spread offense, and most of the schools in Texas run it. He will be able to get recruits that SMU has never been able to touch in the past. QB's will drool for the chance to stay on the main land and sling the ball around the field like they have seen Colt Brennan do the past 4 years.
Jones was also getting screwed by the University from what I have heard and read. If your coach takes a second or third tier football program to a BCS bowl game you should be jumping through hoops to get him more money and the program more money.
Even if Jones was to of stayed at Hawaii, he probable would of never had a season like this year. It would of been tough to get better players to come to Hawaii with the lack of support, lack of tv coverage, and the middle of the ocean aspect. The only reason (as many of us probable know) that Colt Brennan was at Hawaii is because he got in trouble at Colorado, the same goes for the the WR Bess.
