So here I was bored at work trying to figure out a good TD topic when I started to brainstorm topics, and instead of figuring out just 1 TD, I figured out out 99.

This is how it's going to work, everyday from now on to 98 days from now I'm going to make a TD about a number, starting with number 1, and all we have to do is argue about who was the greatest player, driver, etc. that has had/worn that specific number.

You have to agree that is a great idea. I don't think I have seen any TD's on anything like this.

So....... my pick the greatest number 1 is......... Warren Moon.

Number 1 is a hard number.

The best sportsman ever to wear the #1 jersey would have to be "The Big O" - Oscar Robertson

Warren Moon was great - I love him - but Oscar surpassed him in both personal accolades received and team success acheived

Oscar was drafted first overall - was a 12 time All-Star - won one Championship with the Bucks (though he was on the downside of his career, he was still, very much, a key part of that Championship team)

As most NBA fans are aware, Oscar also remains the only person to ever average a triple double in a season (30+ Points/12+ Rebounds/11+ Assists) - Unless LeBron goes berserk one of these years, it doesn't look like anyone will be topping this feat for a long time

For Moon - What used to make him stand out - combined stats for CFL and NFL - have since been eclipsed

Moon attended West Los Angeles College in 1974-75 where he was a record-setting QB. Moon then went to the University of Washingtion were Moon was 11-11 as a starter in his first two seasons as the Huskies QB. During his senior year, Moon led the Huskies to a 27-20 win over the heavily favored University of Michigan in the '78 Rose Bowl and was named the game's MVP, on two short touchdown runs and a third quarter 28-yard touchdown pass.

Dispite his college sucess, Moon was undrafted by the NFL. Many people believed it was because he refused to play any other position other than QB, so he went and joined the CFL.

CFL stats:

He helped lead the Eskimos to an unprecedented five consecutive Grey Cup victories. He won the Grey Cup MVP award twice (1980 & 1982).

In his final CFL season, Moon threw for a league record 5,648 yards, and won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award.

He completed 1,369 passes on 2,382 attempts (57.4 %) for 21,228 yards and 144 touchdown passes. He also led the Eskimos to victory in 9 of 10 postseason games.

Oscar was voted one of the best 50 players in the history of the NBA - Warren Moon made no such list for the NFL (No All Decade Team, No 75th Anniversary All time team etc)

Oscar won a gold medal at the Olympics in 1960 - The NFL isn't in the Olympics but nonetheless....

Moon's record as a starter for the Huskies is less than impressive - and that's probably one of the factors why he was undrafted - Not so with Oscar who went #1 in the draft while leading the Bearcats to a 79-9 record

Oscar won college player of the year honors during all his three years at Cincinnati - Won the scoring title during these three years and he set 14 NCAA records - when he left college he was the ALL TIME leading scorer

Oscar was one of the first members of the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the annual award for the best player collegiately is named the Oscar Robertson Trophy - Moon never left a similar legacy at the collegiate ranks

He won rookie of the year after his first season in the NBA and went on to make NINE consecutive appearances on the All NBA 1st team - Moon on the other hand didn't make many All Pro teams

Last, it needs to be said again - HE AVERAGED A TRIPLE DOUBLE

good idea, but i doubt that u do it for 98 days

This might be the silliest Idea I've seen yet. Daily uniform numbers? C'mon Joker, you can do better than this.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....

Sports Illustrated just ran a photo shoot of the best players on each jersey number, it's on the home page. You're original idea is in fact, not original. You just took their arguments. You even started with their picks for #1. Are you both in on this? if so, I bet you pick Secretariat and Derek Jeter for your #2 argument.

yup.

January 10, 2008  09:34 AM ET

Joker are you really going to come on here for the next 100 days and do this? My lord man that take commitment.

January 10, 2008  09:40 AM ET

@ Captainbagz - I did know that SI ran such a photo feature - but so what? The fact that my opponent chose Warren Moon (as did SI) does not mean they're necessarily correct - these things are still debatable and hence TD-worthy (though it'd be crazy to do this for 100 straight TDs)

Personally I don't have time to be in cahoots with someone to try an up my TD win-loss record - people have lives....

And if I were to argue #2 - I certainly wouldn't pick a horse - triple crown winner or no - neither would I pick Jeter - so there goes your brilliant detective work - Malone was the greatest player to wear the #2 jersey - it's not even close

What? No Love for the Wizard, Ozzie SMith??

January 10, 2008  10:32 AM ET

ManningToHarrison: Here's what I got out of your response (by paragraph):

1) "Yeah, I read the photo shoot on this exact subject a few days ago, so I'm going to cleverly leave out of my reply that I picked the #2 after my opponent picked #1. Then I'm going to twist what you said into some kind of issue over it's debatability."

2) "I'm going to start my sentence with 'Personally I', because just starting it with 'I' might confuse people as to whom I am talking about. Then I'm going to pretend that my life is under scrutiny here."

3) "Since I can no longer argue #2, I'm going to pretend I'm disgusted by the two great answers SI came up with. Then I'll trivialize this whoe event by pretending it took a long time for you to smell the fraud."

I'm glad to see your #2 will be original at least. Good luck in the future.

This guy's name alone tells you that he doesn't understand who the best is. Montana to Rice or Brady to Moss. Those are good combos right there... But in all seriousness, if Warren Moon had been white no one would remember him. He was a lesser Fran Tarkenton with less accuracy, football acumen, and technique. His great talent is largely exaggerated.

January 10, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Woops, my bad, mixed up the name and arguer.

January 10, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Moons numbers were skewed because of his time in the CFL. It's a pass happy league built for Quarterbacks like himself.

January 10, 2008  11:53 AM ET

I'm am sick and friggin tired of horeses being in the discussion of "best athlete" are you freaking kidding me...IF Derek Jeter had a little midget on his back whoopin him with a riding crop he would run fast too....so friggin dumb that horses are considered athletes.....their an animal....with the motivation of someone whooping their backside...

January 10, 2008  12:05 PM ET

There is nothing wrong with anyone named Moon. They embody perfection. Thats why my vote goes to him.

January 10, 2008  12:05 PM ET

I'm lying. I'll stick to the arguments as people have done so graciously for me.

January 10, 2008  12:12 PM ET

I shotgun Number 3......

January 10, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I know who his #3 is gonna be :-)

January 10, 2008  01:51 PM ET

That's right Jim....your "picking up what i'm putting down".....BIG E BABY!!!

January 10, 2008  04:25 PM ET

@ CaptainBagz

Here's what I got out of your response

#1 You're a loser with no life

#2 When in doubt, check #1

"I'm glad to see your #2 will be original at least." - If I argue for Moses, how would that be original? Did SI not already list him under "worthy of consideration"? You either cannot recognise numbers or you can't read - To be original, I'd have to pick someone that wasn't mentioned by SI, no?

The only thing you're brilliant at is being a (let me spell it out for you since you're not very bright) - d o u c h e b a g
