Packers fans are the "thickest skinned" fans in the NFL.

This argument is based on my comments on two blogs: "Thin Skins" at http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/109935 and "Loyal Fans" at http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/109776

Packers fans have enjoyed a relatively good run with their team over the past 15 years or so, since a certain quarterback arrived (note here I'm NOT arguing that said QB is not the best ever, nor that the Packers are the best team ever...), but for a significant stretch of time before then, they suffered through what can only be called woeful mediocrity. Of course, anyone who tries to follow in Vince Lombardi's footsteps has a big act to follow. Bart Starr (former Packers QB) couldn't pull it off as coach in the 70s (when I first started paying attention as a kid); neither could Forrest Gregg (former lineman) in the 80s.

But the fans persevered. There was no owner threat to move to a bigger market. That's because the fans *are* the owners... the franchise is owned by the public, not by any rich businessman. And Packers fans even shoveled snow from the Lambeau bleachers before the season finale vs. the Lions. Finally: you've got to be thick-skinned to take the heat from other fans for wearing a "Cheesehead".

The Packers though have always had a rich history that they could look back on throughout the down years, I know this because I go to school in Wisconsin and everytime I made fun of how crappy the Packers were doing they said well yeah but we won all those Championships. I would say that a team like the Bills, whose fans also have to endure cold, suffering through years of mediocrity, 4 lost superbowls, and the music city miracle have thicker skins. Just like the Pack, their fans always come out no matter how inclement the weather and they dont have the luxury of owning their own team like Packers fans .

Hmmm, you make a good point, what with the suffering and all... I'm afraid that the Bills have the Packers beat on that one.

Though, wouldn't you expect a formerly great team that has fallen on hard times to require fans with even thicker skins? That is, having won the championships and been such a powerhouse, to then be the laughingstock? (well, OK, not the BIGGEST laughingstock, the '76-'77 Buccaneers might have been more laughable than the Packers)

The Bills also have some "glory days", though not as rich as that of the Packers. But I would say that the difference between past glories and the sufferings (admittedly, not current in the case of the Packers) is greater for the "Cheeseheads".

For the Bills, they have more suffering, that's true, but they haven't had as far to fall as the Packers did, from the 60s to the 70s. I would still give the Packers the edge... though in the blogs that prompted me to write this, it's possible to come up with a ranking if you so choose, and plenty of people mentioned the Browns as well. The "Cheesehead" factor also plays a part, to actually be willing to wear a "cheesehead", even in "hostile territory", speaks volumes without saying a word!

The thing with the cheeseheads is a moot point because it's not as though they are embarrassed to where them, the cheeseheads are a point of pride. Also I dont understand the impetus for the td since the pack is so good right now and although they had suffered through a couple of down years, they were still one of the dominant teams of the '90s. I would think that having a thick skin would have to do with being the ridicule of the rest of the league, and if the packers have ever been that it was not for a long period of time. The point that was made below about the lions is a good one. The Lions are routinely trashed for their retarded drafts and their refusal to dump Matt Millen and have never won a superbowl.

Hmmm... if you're going to keep arguing for the team with the most suffering:

A good argument was made in the blog (see the link in my first argument) that the Browns' fans deserve that honor. Stacking the Bills directly against the Browns, no debate, the Browns' fans have suffered more. The Bills didn't have the owner pack up and move town despite the *intense* fan support the team continued to receive. That's why I'm not including the Los Angeles Rams' fans (such as I was during childhood), the level of support was never that of Cleveland, Buffalo, and perhaps Detroit (again, the Lions didn't move in such circumstances). I might also include Colts' fans, given the middle-of-the-night move in 1984, but Art Modell's pure money-grubbing evil of 1995 surpasses that.

Anything Buffalo has suffered from four Super Bowl losses and the "Music City Miracle" pales in comparison to (a) two consecutive losses in the AFC championship game to Denver, one occurring after what is (in)famously known as "The Drive", and (b) the owner moving the team despite FANATIC support.

That said, I'm not saying "most suffering", I'm saying "thickest skinned". TWENTY years of "suckage" after Lombardi. Pack!

The Parking lot was full at 8 am this morning. Packer fans will be there no matter what. They are also the most delusional fans ever. They think they will the super bowl even if they aren't making the Super Bowl.

I agree with the left. I mean, they mix cheese and butter and crisco and call it survival food, aka packer trail mix. They ocnsume roughly 5 pounds of it a day.

I would say Washington if anyone, I say that b/c Washington is known for selling out every game every year, yet they have no historic field, and haven't had a talented team since the first time Gibbs came through.

But even then GB was sorry for a REALLY long time, and still the only way to get a season tickett to the Pack is to find your way into someone's will.

Vote Kanas, yeah even if you think I'm your nemisis I'll give you a vote (how about that Big East team in the BSC bowl?)

January 12, 2008  09:00 PM ET

No!! Packer fans by far. My uncle just turned 45 and when he was 17 got on the list for Packer's season tickets. He just got them 3 years ago. Nobody gives up their tickets and nobody misses a Packer game no matter what. Best fans in the world!!!!

January 12, 2008  09:45 PM ET

January 12, 2008  09:46 PM ET

Detroit Lions, havent had a 500 season since matt millen was hired yet they sell out every game, thats even with seasons on 2 and 4 wins

January 12, 2008  10:07 PM ET

Where are the Seahawks backers now??? Packers kicked that ****

January 12, 2008  10:08 PM ET

Packers kick that ACE!!!!!

Packers have lots of Championships and Super Bowls, and have been good w/ Brett Favre except for the two years before now. The Bills have had heartbreak after heartbreak, and haven't made the playoffs since 1999, the year of the Music City Miracle.

January 12, 2008  11:17 PM ET

Trufant did so great and so did Kerney....man, good thing they are headed to the Probowl

January 13, 2008  01:45 AM ET

Packers fans arent thick skinned unless you mean density of the meat on their bones....that is just a joke. Mmm cheesecurds

Anyways they have a great recent and historic history. Plus they dont take shots/abuse like the Cowboys or Pats etc....
That is what makes one thickskinned.

January 13, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Thick skinned mght be useful in the frozen tundra..

But if u say the bills have more sufferings than the Packs...yet the Bills fan keeps coming back...how can they not be thicker skinned than the pack fans (even if they go back to the 60s or 70s)? So just because they have been on the league longer they have thicker skin?

Favre-ulous, you are a sore winner. I watched the game with my buddy, the hard-core life-long Pack fan, and we had a great afternoon without ANY smack-talk like you're regurgitating here. Why don't you go rub one out while staring at a picture of Favre?
