If Pete Carroll takes the Falcons Job . . . .

For ANY reason other than a HUGE peice of the team

Bad Move on his part

Disagree? Throwdown !

Lets see why he might take the money

1. Money - Pete makes a TON- and will make a TON each year until he retires at USC- If Alabama can pay Sabin 5 Mil how much will USC go? 7? 8? I mean pass the hat amoung the Alumni and Pete is making 8 figures easy

2. Winning - who don;t like to win? and Pete is going to win more next year than Vince Lombardi could win the next two years with the Falcons

3. Being in Charge- you think Pete is not the Be-All end-All in So Cal? Pete could go 101 on the freeway in the Carpool lane and unless the cop is a UCLA grad- he's getting an escort home . . . in the carpool lane . . . going 101.

Ok, I'll take it...Coaching, like all aspects of athletics isn't just about the money. Now granted, it is a BIG part, and the Falcons would pay Pete plenty.

The other draw for coaches is to succeed on the next level. Some may argue that college football is superior to the NFL, but for coaches the pull of the pros is very addictive. It has drawn icons of the college game like Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, and yes, Pete Carroll once before.

And that's even more reason. His past failure gives him something to prove. His success on the collegiate level is unquestioned, and he could live comfortably on the coattails of his past success at USC. But coaches are competitors too. They want to win on the biggest stage of all. Maybe he doesn't want to live that way...maybe there's a fire burning inside him to prove to the football world that he can succeed as an NFL coach - it is an elite fraternity.

If he has that fire, I say good for him - if it is what he really wants to do (for reasons other than just the money) it is a good move for Pete Carroll.

Often times in life you find that the things you did NOT do, are the ones you regret the most.

I would Agree that Pete Might have the fire to come back-

but I would state he is smart enough to NOT leave a great job at USC to try the NFL

I mean Look at Lou Holtz He tried the NFL got waxed in New York and Never went back, Steve Spurrier is NEVER going back, and Sabin I have a hard time thinking is going anywhere NEAR the NFL again.

Smart Coaches know where they belong- look at Petino as another example as a coach that excells in his level- and is smart enough after burning his hands on the hot stove of the pros - is never going back.

The question is, though, WHY do all these immensely successful college coaches risk their reputations, comfy jobs, and life among the co-eds?

It's easy to say he should play it safe. It's also easy to say he has no chance with the Falcons. But for every 10 college coaches who fail, there's always the chance for brilliant success. For example, consider the case of Jimmy Johnson. He was a hugely popular coach of one of if not the best college programs in the country when he wa at the U. So what does he do? He leaves it all behind to coach a Cowboys team that in the years before his arrival had been pretty pathetic. The rest, of course, is history. JJ's name will go down as a part of the Cowboys dynasty of the 1990's.

So maybe he will fail if he goes to Atlanta...should fear of failure be the prime motivating factor in one's career or life? If it were, truly nothing would get accomplished. Failure is very real. A strong desire to overcome it is paret of what we are.

Coaching at a high level is not playing it safe- look the the Michigan coach who was almost ridden out of town on a rail- becasue he could not beat OSU- Look at UCLA- the man comes in clean up the program and gets fired- Look at ARK the guy recruits like a monster beats the #1 team in the country on the ROAD and is STILL going to lose his job!

You even had LSU people that were WILLING to let Les OUT of his contract to GO to michigan- Some even called for him to be fired after the ARK loss! There were even reports of Jack Del Rio being the NEXT coach on THIS VERY SITE and in the LSU newsletter!

and you call the USC job safe? Pete goes 10-2 the next 3 years and the alums will be GLAD to let him try the NFL again.

This TD is not, as some of the comments suggest, WILL Pete take the Falcons job. The TD is whether it would be a bad move on his part. Consider this...

Pete Carroll has what I will call a "Yeah but..." on his resume. That black spot was his former attempt at coaching in the NFL. I am sure that he would love a chance to erase it. In Atlanta, there are some problems to be sure. Mike Vick is gone, but the Falcons are not that far removed from being a playoff team! A high draft pick, a deep-pocket owner who will spend to rebuild...a booming southern metropolis to play in...Atlanta is hardly the wasteland some are portraying it to be. There is plenty of potential to turn the franchise around.

That's the type of challenge a coach loves. This isn't a Norv Turner or Wade Phillips sitiuation, where he would be stepping to helm a team with deep-playoff hopes. Expectations are very low. It's almost perfect...things can't get worse, any positive change and Pete's a hero.

Will he do it? I doubt it. BUT, would it be a BAD move? Not so fast.

Reserve right to change vote if T-Fo counters with better argument

Washington or Baltimore would be a far better choice but he has it made in So Cal

But threat of penalties and stuff could cause him to make move if not now, in next 2 years......

He was a decent head coach compared to some of these guys lately

If Pete Carroll takes the Falcons Job . . he will fail.

Agree that he may have the fire to coach in the NFL and attempt to succeed on the Pro level, however I do not believe that will be enough to motivate him away from the College game. Vote NCShvDavid.

carroll doesnt have anything to prove, he is the man in South California. he has full control of the program and wouldnt be in the same siuation with a bad atlanta team. he is with a team that is succesfull year in and year out, making the BCS practicallly every year since the beginning of the this century...i think.

DJ, as I say in my last argument, Baltimore or Washington would be less ideal options, because expectations there are already high. Atlanta has reached a low-water mark...things can't get worse, they can only get better, and Carroll comes out looking like a hero.

"Pete Carroll has what I will call a "Yeah but..." on his resume"

I can list a TON of Coaches who would LOVE to have the Yeah but on thier resume and have 2 Championship rings

and Look at Bill Walsh- how did he do in College? any rings? any 20 game winning streaks?

I think I'll side with T-Fo on this, on the surface it looks like Carroll has every reason to stay and no reason to go, but T-Fo made some valid points. If he goes and fails, he's no worse off. He's still a phenomenal college coach who couldn't make it work in the Pros. If he goes and succeeds, he's upped his stature and conquered a new challenge.

If it were me, I'd stick at USC until I was the JoePa of LA, but then again, I'm no head coach. I don't know the drive these people have.
