last year around mid season i had a throwdown where i predicted that the daimondbacks would reach the playoffs, i lost that TD. Not only did they reach the playoffs but they won their division and reached the NLCS. Now i know a lot of you are thinking about the padres and the dodgers, but think again. The diamondbacks have one of the best pitching staffs in the league with brandon webb, randy johnson, doug davis, micah owings and introducing DAN HAREN. this was one of the biggest pick-ups of this offseason. the diamond backs had one of the most talented line-ups in the MLB last year, their only flaw was inexpierience, with another year of expierience under thier belts young hitters like chris young, stephen drew, mark reynolds, and extremely talented 20 year old justin upton.

And who beat the Diamondbacks in the NLCS? That's right, the Colorado Rockies.

First off they're bringing back virtually everybody from last year's lineup, which was the best in the NL.

The lineup is anchored by three players coming into their prime. Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe, and Garrett Atkins each will be 28 next year. Tulowitzki is an emerging talent that may be the best all around SS in the game. Todd Helton may have lost a lot of his power, but remember, he's hit .300 for the last 10 years. Finally, they have Willy Taveras, one of the fastest players in the MLB to lead it off. From top to bottom, the Rockies have the best lineup in the NL.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be a good team next year, but not as good as you think. Last year, they defied logic. They were outscored by 20 runs over the course of the season, and still won the division. They had one of the WORST lineups in the NL. How bad was it?

They had the worst batting average and worst OBP in the league, and were 27th in the MLB in runs scored. What did they do to improve their offense over the offseason? Nothing. With one of the worst lineups in the league, I don't think the D-Backs can win the NL West.

what can you expect from when half their players aren't old enouhg to leagally drink? and they're not even close to the worst but quiet the oppisite, eric byrnes, orlando hudson, stephen drew, mark reynold, conor jackson, chris young, justin upton, and a great, great pitching staff. and how can you say they will do nothing to improve? are you bob melvin or something, are you hanging out in the clubhouse i don't think so, every team does something to improve and the D-backs will improve in leaps and bounds because of their age. they were very young last year, but extremely talented. And how does a team reach the NLCS and have the worst lineup in the league?

Personnel wise, they did absolutely nothing to improve the worst lineup in the NL.

"eric byrnes, orlando hudson, stephen drew, mark reynold, conor jackson, chris young, justin upton"

I'll grant you that Eric Byrnes is a pretty good hitter, and Orlando Hudson is decent as well, not great by any stretch of the imagination though. But Stephen Drew? Chris Young? Upton?

Last year, Chris Young posted the 2nd worst BA among starting outfielders (has decent power and speed, but what good is speed if you can't get on base?). Drew posted the worst BA among NL shortstops. Justin Upton played a grand total of 20 games last season.

Just how bad was the D-Backs lineup last year? Pitcher Micah Owings had the highest SLG% on the team.

As for the D-Backs pitching staff, Webb is certainly a bona fide ace.

However, the rest of the rotation is no sure commodity. Dan Haren posted a 4.15 ERA after the all-star break. Randy Johnson got a disc removed from his back. Considering that, I don't think you can guarantee that he'll return to form.

The Rockies have an incredibly good lineup, one that carried them last year and will do the same this year.

okay, i understand your line-up argument but just look at how old they are these were some huge prospects. the diamondbacks have no shortage of talent, webb is a great pitcher and a cy young winner, randy johnson is gettint older but when he was healthy last year he pitched great, dan haren. this throwdown isn't close for no reason, the diamondbacks can't be that bad if they won, thier diviosn and got inot the NLCS can they. And you now who they got there? it's because during thier season they were inexpirienced but as the post season came around, they started to gain some expireince. and as for owings, he's a bad ****. and can you really expect a 20 year old to play more than 20 games, and during most of the season he was 19 years old. yes they did get outscored but again they will continue to improve, if they did that well last season just imagine what another year, of expirience will do for them, and a year is a long time espicially for baseball because of thier long season.

I don't expect a 20 year old to play that many games. That's why I don't believe Justin Upton will have a huge impact on the D-Backs season, at least not this year.

Whatever happened last season has nothing to do with this season. Nothing that happened last year mattered. Congratulations to the D-Backs for getting to the NLCS, but that doesn't matter anymore. The Cards won the world series 2 years ago, but couldn't even get to the playoffs the next year. The Tigers were in that world series against the Cards, but failed to make the playoffs as well. In 2005, the White Sox and Astros made the World Series, but didn't make the playoffs next year?

What's my point? Just the fact the D-Backs were lucky/talented enough to make the playoffs doesn't mean they'll do well this year.

the D-Backs don't have the offense to compete long term. they got outscored by a bunch last year. teams that get outscored cannot keep up winning ways for more than a year. their luck will most definitely run out in the 2008 season and the Rockies will win the division. the Giants will be the surprise team of the NL this year. calling it now. i actually called it a month or so ago. their pitching is surprisingly good and i think Rowand will add a much needed offensive spark. they'll turn a few heads this year and make a run at the WC.

is anybody watching this really creepy guy on american idol?

The Diamondbacks hitters are young and improving with each year. You can't look at the stats on these guys, it's a case of young talent on the rise.

Rockies have good hitting, great fielding, and decent pitching. I think they take it this year.

January 16, 2008  10:11 AM ET

oh okay we can't look at stats. what kind of **** is that? baseball is a game that's based entirely on statistics. if you're gonna say that, then i'm gonna say that the Devil Rays have great, young, up and coming talent, too and you can't look at stats because of that. brilliant logic.
