I gotta say, space is the final frontier for the lego. The lego lends itself beautifully to spaceship construction...and it is in this form that we see the lego in all it's glory. To dumb it down for the sake of a few pirates, is to **** all over all that the lego stands for.

wow, interesting. i'll have to take this in a different direction, though. anime-inspired mech-bot legos trump both space and pirate lego sets, and truly show the potential of the product and the creativity of the fans.
i submit the following as evidence: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/customview.cgi?include=Mecha

See, I disagree entirely, the problem with these "new-fangled" legos are that they do not play by the legos rules. The laws of lego physics are broken, so that a man who doesn't have working elbows or knees is helpless in this new world. And that is a crime beyond repair. But go ahead, love your "mechs"...marvel at the amazing things they do...but know that you're denying the hard working men and women of Lego land the very right to be alive. You heartless, heartless man.

the forces of ignorance and fear always oppose progress and change. yet change and evolution are inevitable and necessary. without innovation lego people would never have reached space. it would still be all pirates and knights and such.
finally, i point out that these lego mechs serve the mini-figure people. they are the powerful tools of a proud people. further evidence:

Ignorace and fear? Never. The search for justice is behind my words. One forgets though, that space was a frontier conquered before Pirates, Knights, and others. The legos as a people ventured to space early in their evolution, cause it is their destiny. And these min-figure people you speak of, they are but andriods built to crush the hard working people of lego land. Fear and ignorance have no place in this argument...only justice for the oppressed.

the first lego theme was trains. both space and castle were introduced in 1978 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_themes). as for these people of lego land, who are you referring to? the mini-figures are the original lego people, the ones without working elbows or knees that you referred to earlier. your argument is so full of holes it may as well be a sixteen-stud technic brick (http://www.robocupqld.net.au/index.php?action=view&view=718). in legoland, creativity and originality rule.

In 2002 the King gave away lego packs to all the wee kiddies. The King loves legos. I commisioned a "lego" Queen about two years ago and have enjoyed many sleepless nights since.
