The Indy 500 has all the pomp & circumstance of any big event. From Jim Nabors and his rendition of "Back Home again in Indiana," the Purdue Band with the National Anthem, to the traditional honoring America's war dead and the playing of "Taps," the balloon release, to the ceremonial chug of milk in Victory Circle. There is no other sporting event that has the tradition and spectacle that Indy has.

Okay, the Indy 500 is cool. But, to say it is the greatest even in all of sports is a stretch. What about the "best two minutes in sports"(Kentuck Derby)? What about the Super Bowl, the World Cup, Tour de France? I'll admit the Indy 500 is a cool sports moment, but there are others that top it.
Red Zone said 05/24, 09:09 PM
I didn't say it was the greatest event in all of the sports. I'm saying the spectacle that surrounds the 500 is what makes the event. The Kentucky Derby with their "best two minutes in sports" isn't much of a spectacle. Showing the horses going to post and then "and they're off..." isn't much. The tradition of the Super Bowl is the game. I love football, but hoisting the Lombardi Trophey is the pinnacle of the game and the season. The halftime shows can leave something to be desired. The World Cup has the appeal of the world but other than the two teams coming out side by side, and the hoisting of the trophey by the winners, the only spectacle are rowdy fans. The Tour has the yellow leader jersey, & the final leg of the race. Those events can't touch the 500.

Okay, the people are a little harsh, but they are pretty much right. I mean the World Cup and Super Bowl are probably the two most glamorous events in the world. Billions of people watch and they have been going on for such a long time. Also, the Triple Crown of horse racing is a bigger "spectacle", because it has so much drama and millions riding on it.

Report Offensive CommentI love football too, but it's not about the actual game or the race, it's about the spectacle of the event.

Report Offensive CommentWell it's nice to see I'm finally not the only one that feels this way. I guess it's hard to sway people's opinions when some folks don't know the difference between racing series. I understand, especially if you didn't grow up in the area or watch the race.
