His combination of power, speed and power made him the best running back of all time, despite the fact that he only played 9 seasons.

JIm Brown was a good hard nose running back, but have you ever heard of Barry Sanders? You want to talk about the best then Barry's name will rank a lot higher then Jim Brown. However, I think the best of all-time has to be Walter Payton. You cannot get any better then, "Sweetness".

While Barry and Walter are also unbelievable (2 and 3 of all-time) respectively, Jim Brown was better. Walter Payton amassed 110 rushing TDs in his career, he played 13 years. Jim Brown scored 106 in just 9. While Walter was running over people throughout his career, Jim Brown was destroying even more, and he had the breakaway speed to add onto his power runs. Have you ever seen a highlight video of Brown? The guy is just plain dominant. I even feel like he had the strength and speed to play today

Did Brown rush for more then 2,000 yards in a single season? How many 100 yard consecitive games did Brown rush for? I admire how strong and dominant Brown was in his day of age, but if you are talking all time Barry I had 14 consecitive 100 yard games in 1997. Barry is ranked only third with Walter and Emmitt Smith ahead of him. Where is Jim Brown?

JIM BROWN PLAYED IN 12 GAME SEASONS FOR HALF HIS CAREER, AND 14 GAME SEASONS FOR THE OTHER. Look we can go back and forth throwing incredible stats from these guys at each other. But when Jim Brown played, it was clear that his numbers and his intangibles go untouched.

Jim Brown had a better yards per carry average than the elusive Barry. That is impressive. It is scary to think what Jim Brown would have done with a) a full career...b) a full season in today's schedule.

I will agree with you that it would have been nice to see Brown finish a full career and today's schedule, but I must remind you that Barry retired way before his career was finished too. Had Barry played out his career there is no doubt in anyone's mind that he would have put the rushing record way out from anyone's reach.

dude think about all the other great backs??? come on.....Jim brown was good but.................Sanders......Payton..............????

Jim Brown was the best of all-time. Stats are mis-leading, Brown only played 14 games a year and retired early.

gotta go with sir scott here. JB was badder than the rest no matter what era you put him in. there is however one young back in the NFL that i think if he keeps up this pace will take the title of the greatest of all time....

power, speed, and power?

May 24, 2007  07:45 PM ET

emphasis on the power

think about it, barry was arguably the strongest runningback ever, you put him in jim brown's era, he runs for 30,000 yards, it would be like his college days when he was running for 2,600 yards and 39 touchdowns in a SEASON.

to many greats to call 1 the best

May 24, 2007  08:13 PM ET

they all had their own qualities, but i just think barry was the best

brown is #1

May 24, 2007  08:23 PM ET

Jim Brown averaged over 100 yards/game, 5.2 YPC, and a over a TD per game.

If Jim Brown had stayed at his current pace, he would've had 15963 Yards, and 137 Rushing TDs (176 Total TDs) in the same amount of games as Barry.

That's 694 more yards and 67 more Total TDs than Barry.

Jim Brown was bigger than any linebacker that played during his time. He was 6'2", 232 lbs, still bigger than some even today.

I wish there were more space to formulate an argument. 3 short arguments are not enough for a topic such as this.
