Dwyane Wade is one of the most recognizable and electric players in the NBA. Even casual fans could pick his face out of a lineup. And, since the All-Star Game is a chance for the league to showcase its best for the fans, Dwyane Wade will deserve his All-Star nod... if he receives a spot.

This season has been a seemingly down year for Wade. The Heat are mired in a funk, and Wade has battled a dislocated left shoulder and extensive nerve damage in the area all season long. Yet his numbers still match up favorably with his career averages...

This year, in fact, he is averaging almost a point more a game than his career average. And, while his rebound total is down, his assist & steal averages are actually up as well against his career average. Wade, despite the injury, is playing as well as he has in his career...

But a lot of people miss that reality due to the fact the Heat are buried at the bottom of the Southeast Division standings with only eight wins. But Wade should not be punished for being on a losing squad. He showed last night against Portland (37 pts, 5 reb, 3 A, 1 blk, 1 steal, two 3-pt FG) that he is still a dominant force in the NBA, & deserves an ASG bid...

Well, you made a wise selection in the challenge...it's going to be hard to argue against a guy as well known and popular as D-Wade...especially since he is the leading vote getter to date among guards, right above Jason Kidd.

Since guards, both shooting and point, get voted on together, I'm going to look at it this way. I know fans want to SEE the most popular players on the court...but this is about DESERVING to be there. My question is this: Wade is injured, his team last chalked up a win BEFORE Christmas. His point totals are fine, but his percentages are down, and he defends like a piece of tissue paper.

Meanwhile Kidd is shooting what, about 33% on another underachieving team.

Sure Wade and Kidd are both major talents, but do they DESERVE to be there? Not, in my opinion, when it means a guy like CHAUNCY BILLUPS, would be left off the starting roster as a result. Here's a guy who plays for a team that actually wins (a lot), AND is likely their best player.

It's a tough TD to argue, but I'm boiling it down to that point. If Wade makes the starting roster (he will) it will be at the expense of a player who truly earned his way on by his play this year.

"Deserve" is a loaded word? What makes a person deserve something? Are team results an indicator of individual merit? Does a proven track record merit consideration in the equation?

What it comes down to, for me, is this: If a plurality of fans wish to see Dwyane Wade as a starter in the All-Star Game, then both he AND those who voted him in deserve to see him start the game. As I referenced in my opening argument, his points, assists & steals are all higher this season than his career averages. He is playing well -- despite injuries and a floundering franchise.

The NBA, better than any other league, understands that marketing the players directly to the fans wins converts. Wade is one of the marquee young faces in the league. Certainly, you can say that Billups is deserving as well... but the fact that there are more deserving candidates than starting positions does not mean that Wade automatically stops deserving his place.

The system is set in place. Players, fans and league officials all knew before voting that the All-Star Game is always going to be a popularity contest. Wade is popular, talented and recognizable... and thus deserving of any slot he receives...

Sorry, but this is not about what the fans deserve or want. The topic of the TD is "DOES WADE DESERVE IT". Of course his numbers are up...Miami has quickly degeaded into a "one trick pony" team. If you are the only bonafide good player left on a team, chances are, you are going to be taking more of the shots and scoring more of the points.

Take last night's game for example. Wade went, I believe, 7 for 23 from the field against the KNICKS! and LOST. Repeat, lost to the Knicks. On horrible shooting. It's like when Shaq left the Lakers...Kobe's scoring went through the roof, because he was the only real game in town. You have to look at the big picture.

Billups actually DESERVES to go. He's play is clearly superior to that of Wade and Kidd in that his numbers are strong on a high performance team with multiple options to take numbers on any given night.

The All Stars shouldn't be there on name alone...and that's not what this TD is about. It is about deserving to go...and Wade does not...not this year. Not when there are players who DESERVE to go more.

Well, T-fo, if we are to make THAT distinction about the fans, we must also recognize that this TD is not "Does Wade or Billups deserve it more?"

As I said, Billups is incredibly deserving... but that alone does not make Wade undeserving. The All-Star Game is not intended to reward those players whose contributions lead to victories... it is to reward those players who the fans want to see playing one another. You cannot discount the wishes of the fans when they are the main determinant in who plays and who watches.

Was Kobe undeserving of an All-Star nod simply because Shaq left town? Certainly not. Wade has become a greater focus of opposition defenses with nothing else working for the Heat, and yet he is playing at his consistently-high level. Imagine what his numbers would look like WITHOUT major shoulder damage...

Stats only tell part of the picture. Billups is playing strong in large part because opponents cannot key in solely on him -- or Prince, Hamilton and Wallace will kill them. In Miami, Wade IS the offense. And, as I said before, this TD is not WHO DESERVES TO GO MORE, it is about whether Wade deserves to go. His play in the face of adversity merits his spot.

Alke, you keep bringing up who the fans want to see in the All Star game, and that's a fine topic, but completely off topic here. This TD has nothing to do with who the fans want to see. It is about whether or not Wade DESERVES to be an All Star. You are basicaly saying that, yes, on name alone, he should be one. Yet that is what all true sports fans hate about All Star games and Pro Bowls. The guys who get voted in not on their level of play, but as a popularity contest.

When Shaq left town, Kobe started dropping 50 point games and more...he went out of his way to prove his merit. No comparison.

Wade is, and has been hurt. His numbers are down. Just look at averages:
FG% - Lowest of his career
FT% - Lowest of his career
TO per game - most in his career
Rebounds - fewest per game since his rookie year.

Those are not the stats of someone who DESERVES to be an All Star. Give it to someone who has earned by their play, not by their name alone.

I think they should shut this team down for the year. Trade Shaq and sit Wade to give him some off time to heal. Hopefully get some youth with a Shaq trade and than they will get a top Lottery pick. This team needs an overhaul and if they want any chance of keeping Wade around after his contract is up they better get him a team.

Better arguement (in my opinion) by Bigalke.

Very good arguement Bigalke, and good arguement to you T-Fo.

But the vote can be.....cough......bought......I mean swayed with a convincing argument

The fact that Wade is maintaining and even besting his career averages, despite playing with effectively one shoulder, is indicative of the fact that he deserves to be an All-Star.

January 20, 2008  11:50 PM ET

Alke...he's not besting anything but PPG!!! Most of his stats are down. The only reason scoring is up is the rest of the team stinks. He's shooting less than 75% at the free throw line. His 3-pt avg is in the low 20% range. How can you say his numbers are up???

January 20, 2008  11:56 PM ET

Assists & steals...

January 21, 2008  12:07 AM ET

That's grasping alke. Anyway, good TD...you made a smart selection from the challenge list. Hard to get votes arguing against a popular player.

He's hurt and his team stinks but Wade is still an all-star. Despite it all collapsing around him, he's holding his numbers.

Vote to Bigalke.
