Mike Tomlin plays a 3-4 1 gap scheme. It is basically a 4-3 defense.

Tomlin plays the 3-4 like a 4-3 where Hampton only plays the 2 gap / and even then Hampton tries to get after the quarterback as well.
"Talent does defy scheme," said Tomlin. "The great ones, they can play regardless of what the specific Xs and Os are. In today's NFL, the lines are really starting to get a little blurry, specifically when you start talking about the 3-4 versus the 4-3. The issue now is whether it is a one-gap front or a two-gap front. There are some 3-4 teams that are a one-gap front and there are some 3-4 teams that are a two-gap front. The 3-4 teams that are a one-gap front play very similar to the 4-3 teams. It is becoming gray, and I think football players are football players, and guys who can make plays will make plays."

I'm not sure where you copied and pasted that all from, but the Steelers talent scheme is basically linebacker heavy, not D-line. Just because Hampton gets shifted into a different gap doesn't change the basic identity of the Steelers defense, which is a 4 linebacker set. It's the way they were built...with Haggans, Farrior, Foote and Harrison (replacing Porter), and its the way of the future considering they drafted LB's with their first two picks last year.

more than that, Coach Lebeau runs any number of sets, including just two down linemen. On any given series, they can be a 3-4, a 4-3, a 2-5...it is a hybrid D...but the base is still a 3-4.

The real use of Hampton is to use his bull to engage two linemen. This allows for the inside linebackers to use a stunt X-blitz to attempt to confuse the read of the QB. When properly executed, the QB has no way of knowing where the rush is coming from and which LB will drop into the middle coverage. Of course, that means TWO inside linebackers must be used, and that my forfeiting friend is a 3-4 alignment.

****. 4-3 vs. 3-4 is NOTHING other than a base alignment. 1-gap/2-gap are assignments, not formation. Most every 3-4 team has several looks they employ alignment wise. An OLB can lineup in a DE position and whether he puts his hand on the ground or doesn't determines whether it's a 4-3 or a 3-4. Alignment does not = assignment.
