34 HR, 97 RBI, 91R, 15SB, 324 AVG- looks like a great year doesnt it- thats because it was- and keep in mind, he didnt play the whole year. I had Ryan Braun on my fantasy team last year, and when i read some updates, every time he reached a certain number for HRS, say for 20 hrs, the expert would say that he was the 2nd fastest player to reach that number so shortly in their career, and he would always be about a day or two behind none other then ALBERT PUJOLS. I also believe Braun will have better numbers in the early career, because braun has a better lineup around him (fielder, hardy, hart, and weeks) then pujols had. Plus Braun has better speed and can get more steals, although Pujols has improved on that.

******KEEP IN MIND IM ONLY TALKING ABOUT BATTING BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY BRAUN WILL NEVER WIN BACK-TO-BACK GOLD GLOVES.********

Let's talk about Pujols for a second. He's hit over .300 along with 30 HRs and 100 RBIs for 7 straight years. He's obviously one of the best hitters in the game.

Braun's obviously had one of the best rookie seasons, in recent memory. But that's the thing...IT'S JUST ONE SEASON!

In 1930, Wally Berger hit .310 38 HRs and had 119 RBIs in his ROOKIE season. He was probably about just as good as Braun.

What happened after that season? Berger never hit over 35 HRs again, and broke 120 RBIs just twice. He pretty much peaked at his rookie season.

Berger's a bit of an obscure example...so I'll bring up a more contemporary one. Everyone remember Doc Gooden?

Here's what Gooden did for the first 5 years of his career:

91-35 2.62 ERA 1067 Ks

Here's how he did the other 11 years of his career:

103-77 4.14 ERA 1226 Ks

Another incredible dropoff, right? Gooden looked like he was one of the best pitchers in the league. Suddenly he declined.

What's the moral of these two stories? Just because a baseball player comes fast out of the gate, and has 1, or even 5 great seasons, it guarantees ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Braun looks good now, but wait a couple years before giving the verdict.

Take a look at the stats for Braun's rookie year and Pujols rookie year:

34 HR, 97 RBI, 91R, 15SB, 324 AVG-- braun
37 HR, 130 RBI, 112 R, 329 AVG-- pujols

pujols has better stats but played in 48 more games. That's about 1/4 of the season.

I'd also like you to look at some ROY honors and look how good they fared

2006: Hanlley Ramirez (stud) and Verlander
2005: Ryan Howard
2001: Pujols and Ichiro
1999: Carlos Beltran
1997: Nomar
1996: Derek Jeter
1993: Mike Piazza
1991: Jefff Bagwell
1987: Mark McGwire
1986: Jose Canseco
1983: Daryl Strawberry
1982: Cal Ripken Jr.
1972: Carlton Fisk
1968: Johnny Bench
1967: Rod Carew and Tom Seaver
1963: Pete Rose
1959: Willie McCovey and Bob Allison
1956: Luis Aparicio and Frank Robinson
1951: Willie Mays
1947: Jackie Robinson

Not a bad list if you ask me

Congratulations to Braun for having a solid rookie season, but it means absolutely nothing. For as many great rookies that you listed up there, I can list plenty of rookies that turned out to be busts.

To take a recent example, Anibal Sanchez went 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA 2 years ago, and he even pitched a no hitter. How did he do last season? He posted a 4.80 ERA and got demoted to the minors.

Livan Hernandez had a 3.18 ERA in his rookie season. That was the best ERA he'd post in a single season for his entire career. He wasn't necessarily a bust, but his rookie season was likely his best one.

Here are some other young players that were promising, but have turned out to be busts (so far at least):

Kerry Wood
Mark Prior
Clint Barmes
Zach Duke
Dontrelle Willis
Scott Podsednik
Angel Berroa
Jody Gerut
Rick Ankiel (as a pitcher)
Terence Long
Pat Listach
Bob Hamelin
Jerome Walton
Rolando Arrojo
Todd Hollandsworth

All of these players received votes for rookie of the year, and some were rookies of the year. Sure, you have a couple nice examples too, but you definitely can't guarantee Braun's the next Pujols.

Also, it's pretty interesting you have Darryl Strawberry on your list.

I find it interesting that about 75% of the players you just named were busts only because of injuries, especially your first two examples. And youve been missing the point this whole time. Yes, you can name people that have had solid rookie seasons and have been busts later on, but Braun's season was still twice as good as the examples you've given. It is only once in a while that a rookie has the type of season that Braun just put up. The last person weve seen to compare to his stats were Albert Pujols. Even Hanley Ramirez, who is considered the best shortstop in a plentiful of good and 3 GREAT ones, did not have a rookie season as good as Braun's. It is one thing to hit 20hr, 310 AVG, maybe 90 R and 100 RBI, in a full rookie season, and still be considered a great rookie, but Braun did that and MORE, in about 4 months of play.

If Braun played the whole year you coul've expected these numbers::

320 AVG, 40 HR, 115 RBI, 100 R, 18 SB.

Those are Alex Rodriquez numbers, but put up in a rookie season. Now tell me any other rookie, even Albert Pujols, to put up those kind of numbers.

"I find it interesting that about 75% of the players you just named were busts only because of injuries, especially your first two examples. And you've been missing the point this whole time."

That's my point! What if Braun does get injured? He wouldn't become the next Pujols then would he?

Look, all those players I listed had great rookie seasons, and turned out to be busts. Rodruiguez has proven himself by performing great year after year. Pujols has done the same. Braun's had 1 great year. JUST 1! I don't care how good it was, YOU can't guarantee he'll be the next Pujols because there's just too many variables.

In fact, there's one thing Braun can't do that Pujols does: walk. Sure, Braun's batting average is nice, but his OBP is a pedestrian .370. Eventually, teams will just start throwing Braun balls out of strike zone, and let Braun swing away.

id say next Cabrera

January 20, 2008  06:47 PM ET

He strikes out far too much and doesn't walk enough. I would say a closer comparison to Braun would be Juan Gonzalez.

January 20, 2008  07:10 PM ET

Nah, the next Brook Robinson

<_<

January 20, 2008  07:24 PM ET

Dwight Gooden had 1500 innngs under his belt by age 25. Unless I have missed something, there isn't a statistic for hitter abuse like there are for pitchers.

January 20, 2008  07:30 PM ET

My point, Angelos, was that Gooden was hyped beyond belief for a while. For a while, he was the best pitcher in the game. However, he didn't become the next Nolan Ryan, or Walter Johnson (in terms of pitching accomplishments, not style of pitching).

January 20, 2008  07:56 PM ET

That's true, BBJ. However, Dwight Gooden is arguably the biggest anomaly in the history of baseball. It's difficult to compare anybody to him. Wally Berger is a much better example but the balls were juiced in 1930. All kinds of offensive records were set that year. Berger had a great year but his .999 OPS was tied for 10th in the Nl. In four of his next five seasons, he finished in the top 8 in OPS and had a better OPS+. Berger was on his way to a Hall of Fame career before his shoulder injury.

January 20, 2008  08:17 PM ET

if you ask me- going 103-77 with a 4.14 era is still pretty damn good. And as for berger, that's one example. Look at the examples I've laid out that have turned out the other way.

January 20, 2008  09:31 PM ET

strikes out WAY too much...

January 20, 2008  10:27 PM ET

It's his first year give it some time- just imagine in two years when he learns to be patient

January 20, 2008  11:06 PM ET

103-77 is good, but it's not HOF good...it's certainly a LOT worse than Gooden did in his first few years.

January 21, 2008  08:24 PM ET

yes but not making it into the HOF isnt exactly busting. And just because his numbers went down, did you ever consider that his age was going up?

January 22, 2008  07:08 AM ET

No baseball pitcher should be better at the age of 30, than 20. Age had nothing to do with it.

I don't think you understand my point on Gooden. After his first few seasons, you could've argued he would be the next Seaver or Spahn or whoever. But was he? NO!

January 22, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Ahh, the basketball Jesus. Hey man, there's a God td going on, shouldn't you be over there defending yourself?

January 22, 2008  04:49 PM ET

You can't base this trhowdown on injuries that's not what a bust means. If your a bust, then you either played good early in your career and just sucked later on (Dontrelle Willis) or if your expected to be great and just never do good (someone like Eli Manning)

January 22, 2008  04:50 PM ET

**Eli is doing really good in the playoffs though I must say**

January 22, 2008  05:26 PM ET

You said Ryan Braun will be the next Pujols. You didn't say Ryan Braun will be the next Pujols provided he doesn't get injured.
