I'm going to go with the old adage that defense wins championships. I believe it's time for a little history lesson.
2006- Colts- held Bears to 17 pts in SB- #1 postseason defense
2005- Steelers- held Seahawks to 10 pts in SB- #4 regular season defense
2004- Patriots- held Eagles to 21 pts in SB- #5 postseason defense
I'm pretty sure you're catching what I'm saying by now, huh? You can't have a weak defense and expect to win the Super Bowl. It won't happen. Let's take this season for example. The Giants, who nobody expected to get this far, have the fifth best postseason defense. The Patriots, who went a perfect 16-0 in the regular season, finished with the 4th best defense.
Look at all the Steelers teams in the 70s and 80s that were so successful. The common denominator? The famous Steel Curtain defense. In SB IX, they held the Vikings to six points. In SB X, they held the Cowboys to 17 points.
Here's a final stat for you: in all the 41 Super Bowls, the losing team has only scored more than 21 points five times. Of those five times, they have only reached 30 points once. EVERY SUPER BOWL CONTENDER NEEDS A GOOD DEFENSE. That's why it's the most important.

Obviously were only speaking of the NFL in this question, so since you took the tried and true Defense argument, I will go with the Big O. My own thoughts on Defense wins championships is this, well not really but it does get you there. Historically how many defensive players ahve won the MVP of the big game? Exactly 3. In all that time only 3. I know I know but but but, however without an Offense worth anything your Defense will be gassed by the end of the second half. If your Offense can't eat up clock and score, eventually no matter how good the defense it will break down. Also let's look at NE this season, the reason why they went undefeated was not all their Defense, in fact their Defense may not rank top ten all time, however their Offense certainly does. Debates like these will usually come down to preference, and I coach Defense so I get how important it is. I also understand how disheartning it is to hold a team down and lose by a field goal, or a last minute TD becuase your offense couldn't keep you off the field. Clock management and sustained drives, without those you could have every pro bowler in the league and by the fourth they will be gassed, and getting run over.

Before offering my rebuttal to your argument, I will hand over yet another stat for all you people who love them: every team that held their opponent to less than fourteen points in the Super Bowl is 17-0 in those games. How does that not directly support the belief that defense wins championships?
As for your saying that only 3 SB MVPs have played on the defensive side of the ball, I will say that defense truly is a collective effort. You have to have a good defense as a whole to win. One guy doesn't make all the tackles. But on offense one guy is making all the throws and one guy is getting all the carries.
If your defense can't hold a team and stop them you'll never win a game. But I'm confused with what you said. "If your offense can't eat up clock and score, eventually no matter how good the defense it will break down." I don't get what you're saying.
The Patriots had the 4th best defense this year! It wasn't only their offense winning them games.
ESPN ranked the top 10 defenses of all time (http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/bestNFLdefense.html). I decided to go and see how those teams fared in the postseason. Of those 10, seven won either the SB or NFL Championship.
B0mb3rs (HoF) said 01/22, 09:09 AM
Here is what I am saying, take the Chicago Bears of last year as an example, great defense RIGHT? Not so fast, ndy was the offensive juggernaught in that game, and they wore that defense out. If your Defense is on the field for a long scorign drive, followed by a three and out, how are they not going to be worn out? To keep your defense fresh you have to move the ball effectivly. I would say based on your stats, teams with good running games can be said to have won as well correct? NE couldn't get over the hump until they added Corey Dillion, Indy with Edge or Addai do they go to the show, I think not. The Cowboys of the 90's were known for what? A great O-line, the 9ers, a great offense, the Skins of the 80's a great Oline and running game, Elway and the Broncos no matter how good the Defense couldn't get it done with out TD. The greatest show on turf beat the better defensive unit that day. At the end of the day it's fine if you hold someone to three points, but if your team can't score 3 or 6 you'll never win the game. Offense keeps the other teams offense off the field as well, which makes it a good Defense too, don't ya think?
G.O.A.T. said 01/22, 04:45 PM
Are you saying that good defense and good offense go hand in hand? I think that's what you were trying to conclude there are the end. Nonetheless, with your "but if your team can't score 3 or 6 you'll never win the game", I could just as easily say "but if your team doesn't hold the opponent to punts and field goals you'll never win the game".
Concerning what teams were known for: you know why they were known for their offenses? Because that's what people pay to say. Is it more fun to see a game won 42-38 or 3-0 (see Miami-Pittsburgh)? Most would probably pick the former. The 2003 Patriots had the 4th best postseason defense and won the Super Bowl that season. Their opponent, the Panthers, had the 5th best. HOWEVER, the Pats only had the 6th best offense. I know it's not a huge difference, but it's there.
You mentioned the Bears great defense last season and how the Colts picked them apart in the SB. How good really was their defense? Not very. They had the 10th best defense (out of 12) and the Colts had the best. The better defense did win, eh? But the Bears had a better ranked offense (7th) and the Colts had a worse ranked offense (2nd). Do you understand what I'm saying?

People SAY Special Teams won the Patriots their 3 Super Bowls... But who drove them down the field for the score?

Who made the key stop to give the offense the ball to drive down the field?

Take yesterday for example, the Pats kept the Chargers out of the endzone. They made San Diego settle for field goals and that's what won them the game.

Hmmmm...I'm on the fence. GOAT, your stats seem impressive until you take into account that there are only 12 playoff teams. 2004 Patriots #5 postseason defense. Out of 12? That's middle of the pack.
I'll hold off voting until arguments are done,

Ramdrum, are you forgetting about the other teams that were in the playoffs that year though? Here were the other GOOD team defenses that played in that game:
Steelers
Chargers
Broncos
Eagles (They were Full Strength)
Packers
Seahawks
Rams (An OK Defense)
Those were the teams BESIDES the Patriots in the Playoffs that had good defenses in 2004. By looking back on that year, some of those were pretty solid defenses. The Patriots were also known for their Throw-First offense that year, and their Secondary was young, and not the same as it was today. So #5 overall that year is actually kind of shocking considering all of those other teams were there, eh?

Also, G.O.A.T., what's up with having two of three expressing postseason defense then the Steelers being shown with a REGULAR season defense? You provide all of one side or all of another. Don't mix and match...

Why no love for Special Teams?!

I was just trying to show how good these defenses were. I believe the Steelers' postseason defense being somewhere in the middle of the pack (6-8) but I'm not sure. Of course, you have to remember all the tough teams they had to face as they were the wild card that year.
And sorry, Josh. No love for special teams in this one.

good td...vote to goat so far - based on the argument on past superbowl winners - it seems that good team defense is key to a superbowl in the big game - so it should be interesting this year

Sorry, in my last argument I have a couple typos. Here are the corrections:
1st paragraph, 2nd line: "are" should be "at"
2nd paragraph, 2nd line: "say" should be "see"
