Penn State had a decent year this season. (not one of their better ones). Anthony Morellie was ok in the 2007 season. He fumbled a lot of times and threw a lot of picks. Next year they will have a new, strong. healthy, and athletic QB. They will still have 2 good RB's and 3 good WR's. Last year Notre Dame had a horrible season and did not have a QB. Jimmy Clausen was just a freshman but I excpected better out of him. He got benched for a couple of games after the Penn State 31-10 win over Notre Dame. I just dont think that Clausen will do any better next season. They lost a couple of good, key players to their team and will have trouble scoreing. I think that Notre Dame will have at least 6 or 7 loses next year. I think that Penn State will only have 4 or 5 loses next year. Penn State will surely be better than Notre Dame next season.

First off, congrats on the upcoming win. I can't win this, but I'll try.

First off, let's look at the schedules. Normally, ND has a killer schedule, but this year it is a cupcake galore.

v. SDST
v. Michigan
@ Michigan St.
v. Purdue
v. Stanford
@ UNC
@ Washington
v. Pitt
@ BC
@ Navy
v. Syracuse
@ USC

That schedule is easy with almost every game (besides SC) being winnable. They get their road games besides SC at Navy who is going through a coaching change, an inexperienced UNC team, a Ty Willingham team, Michigan State who they almost always beat in East Lansing, and Boston College who is losing eight starters on offense. PSU has to go into Columbus and Madison, two top 10 teams next year, not to mention home games against Central Florida, Illinois, and IU. That's a tougher schedule than Notre Dame's.

Jimmy Clausen came on strong at the end of the year. He played great against Air Force and Duke (6 TDs and 0 INTs) and he only had one game with multiple INTs. He ended the year with a 56% completion percentage. He wasn't going to win the Heisman this year. He had a decent year for having no O-line.

More on the next argument.

jimmy clausen played against 2 bad teams so you cant say that he came on strong at the end of the year. jimmy clausen is going to choke in all those games up there. well maybe not all of them.they will probably beat SDST, Stanford, and Washington. they might beat Syracuse and UNC also. They also have a chance against Navy. Im not sure about the Pitt matchup but anyway that gives them a 6-6 record. and maybe a 5-6 or 7-6 record. Penn State is still going to be a better team next season. (Penn State schedule next argumen)

Didn't Air Force go 7-5 and make it to a bowl? Sure, Duke was terrible, but I would say that is mostly because of the offense. The pass defense wasn't terribly bad. Any signs of strength is good. I don't think that Tom Brady's TD record is any less significant because he played the Dolphins twice and threw for 9 TDs. That doesn't matter. Air Force also had a decent pass defense. Clausen also threw a great touchdown pass in the Stanford game to David Grimes.

Have a chance against Navy? I know they beat ND, but they also lost their great head coach. They will take a major step back.

Might beat Syracuse? Notre Dame was terrible, but Syracuse was flat out disgusting.

Notre Dame is bringing back 16 starters and finally found a running game at the end of the year with Robert Hughes.

I still think that ND is going 7-5.

Penn State is losing Dan Conner and Anthony Morelli. Conner was the anchor of the defense, and Morelli was the leader on the team. Deon Butler and Derrick Williams haven't lived up to the hype. Justin King is gone, so now they will have to break in a new corner. While ND loses a bad safety, center, and defensive ends, PSU loses good players.

Forfeited Turn

Notre Dame is finally going to get players that fit into the 3-4 system. When you switch defenses, you have to take a step back to take a step forward. I feel like they are going to take that step forward. This past year had to use a lot of mixing and matching. Nose tackles switching with the ends and outside linebackers moving all over the field. With 2 recruiting classes to get players that came to play in the 3-4 and with the juniors and seniors having experience in the system, they should be able to succeed in this system.

Brian Smith and Kerry Neal came on strong as pass rushing outside linebackers at the end of the year. With pressure on the QB, they held Stanford to 21 points, Duke to 7, and Boston College to 27.

Ian Williams was a Freshman All-American and Pat Kuntz was great in pass defense.

David Bruton was a big hitter, and Darrin Walls was fantastic in pass defense.

The defense should be very good next year with the Irish only losing 3 starters.

seeing nd schedule...im not so sure that, that is an easy schedule....at all

not aiming to high to be better than a team that had something like 3 wins.

I will next start a TD that states that the Pats will be better than the Dolphins next year.

ANY QB from a premier football school should play great against Duke and Ar Force. No disrespect to either of them, but they aren't exactly powerhouses. I wouldn't necessarily use that as a barometer of things to come for Clausen (except for maybe things to come vs. AF or Duke).

Yeah, most of their games are winnable, but there are many that are very lose-able too. And, ND didn't show allot last year to inspire confidence that they will win the games that are winnable.

say what?
thats a bit premature isnt it ?

Penn St isnt that good, theyll still lose to OSU and michigan. Also dont be shocked if they lose to Oregon St. Notre Dame started alot of freshman last year who had no expericne, now thyere starting off with an eas scedule so those wins should help develop confidence. Notre Dame will be better

Vote to the right for better arguments. Penn State isn't so good either. And Morelli doesn't have an "e" at the end.

Well I read the title of this TD and all I have to say is: Well duuuuuh!!!!

January 25, 2008  03:43 PM ET

Vote to IrishR. That schedule is an easier one than last year, and I believe that Clausen is going to be better this time around. As long as Charlie Weis doesn't outsmart himself on offense, the Irish will be better than the Nittany Lions.
