HOF Tourney Throwdown: What is the best reason you can think of, as to Why Joe Namath is in the HOF?
Ed Reed Fan:4 TD'S IN ONE GAME said 01/22, 08:42 PM
No question in my mind, Namath is best remembered, revered and in the pro football HOF due to the backup of his guarantee that the jets would defeat the colts in superbowl III, period. Although his stats are impressive, they're not as hall of fame worthy without that guarantee being so greatly backed up and the jets pulling arguably the greatest superbowl upset of all-time, let alone maybe the greatest pro football upset of all-time.

I think Namath is remembered most by being on three division championship teams. This probably put him in the HOF. While he wasn't the best player and certainly not on a very good team, he made the players around him really good.
The Jets-Colts game was unexpected, yes, but winning three division titles is just even more amazing considering that he was on the St. Louis Rams, one of the worser teams. The Jets were a solid team and capable of being Super Bowl worthy, however, the division titles were unexpected.

okay, welll, there isn't really anything left to say until you actually post an argument, I guess I will argue a little.
As winning a Super Bowl is amazing, to be on a few bad teams and still win three divsions with them, that is just amazing. Plus those division titles got them a trip to the Super Bowl.
Ed Reed Fan:4 TD'S IN ONE GAME said 01/24, 08:10 PM
i understand what you mean, but w/out that HUGE SB win, Namath's legend would not have been cemented enough to get into the HOF based simply on stats and influence alone, period.

A Super Bowl win is great but it doesn't get you a trip to the Super Bowl. Many players have had a few Super Bowl wins but not all of them make the Hall of Fame. Winning regular season division titles, thats something that will get put on your stats and carry you to the Hall of Fame with some help of good stats.

He is in for being "Broadway" persona and his guarantee. His performance on the field is average at best. In those days athletes were celebrated for their personality. To bad these days they are usually criticized for standing out.

He's in the hall of fame because it was the 60's when he went, and people didn't have today's media coverage and fantasy stats to show what a bad QB he really was. If he played today, his name would be Trent Dilfer.

Namath was the first quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season. Nobody cleared that mark for another 12 years. Say what you want about the man but he could sling the football around pretty good in his prime.

He was a true superstar. You kids that are just looking at statistics don't understand the overall impact he had on the game.

I know, I really considered sending this out to people. Usually a forfeited turn gets you a loss but its only a TD. . .

Well, I gave you a vote. Namath is a popular target nowadays but he was certainly one of the best from his era, not to mention one of the most recognizable NFL icons.

Namath also had some awesome years in the AFL pre-merger. He played two-thirds of his career on knees that were gimpier than Marino at the end of his career. You know, I'm really getting tired of the stars of the 1960's and '70's getting a bad rap. I didn't see the sixties, but saw a good part of the '70's. You can't just look at stats and make an assertion. These guys were great football players. Namath included. Namath got in for more than the Super Bowl win. Vote to Dawgee.
