NMI Tourney - "Remove One Player from the Baseball Hall of Fame" (career must have ended after 1955)

Player first, then the arguments...

My candidate for removal:

Gaylord Perry

I dont do baseball TD's.....But Bill Mazeroski has no place in the HOF

I can use my third argument to post numbers if we have to. But I'll be simple to start with Gaylord Perry and why he doesn't belong. He cheated. He admits to cheating. He broke the rules by throwing an illegal spitball. He then proceeded to write books about throwing the spitball. I even think one was titled "Me and the Spitter". This was not in some quaint past when the pich was legal. It was against the rules of baseball. He broke the rules knowingly and openly admitted to doing so.

In this day, where players like Bonds, Clemens, Palmeiro, McGwire, Sosa et al are all having their Hall of Fame credibility debated for using performance enhancing drugs. These are all players who were giants of their generation, and a large portion of the population and voters want to punish them for it. I'm not going to get into a debate over whatr should be done to these guys - that's a topic for another TD.

BUT, this stands out. All of those guys are ACCUSED of cheating by use of a performance enhancer. Gaylord Perry ADMITS to using a performance enhancer. That should be enough to pull his plaque from the Hall. It's no place for a proven, unabashed cheater.

Bill Mazeroski has made the HOF for one reason. For winning the 1960 World Series with a game-ending home run in the seventh game. The only game 7 walk off in World Series History...

Thats it...One HR and your in the HOF. He is a career .260 hitter with a whoping 138 HRs. There are players who play 4 seasons and have 138 HR's. 7 time all star doesnt warrant a HOF enshrinement....The best he ever finished for MVP voting is 8th...

Perry may have "cheated" as you say....But what he did statisticly, merits a HOF induction. If all these people who have HOF votes are still thinking about voting for Mcgwire and Bonds...Then there is no way that a guy who "spit" on a baseball should be removed.

OK, let's seperate "alleged" cheating from "admitted" cheating. Big Mac has already been denied his initial shot at the hall based only on the suspicion of cheating. Granted, the evidence is strong, but there has been no proof as of yet. Still the voters decided to deny him when he became eligible. This despite he met one of the formerly "automatic" statistics for induction - his prodigious homerun total.
Gaylord Perry ADMITTED IN PRINT that he used an illegal, banned substance to doctor his pitches- several of them actually, from hair grease to vaseline. If there can be serious debate about alleged cheaters being denied the Hall, how can there be any debate about a confirmed cheater?
As to Maz, he was DENIED the hall for decades because of that homerun. It overshadowed the fact that he was a legendary fielder at 2B. Go read accounts of his contemporaries. There was no one faster at turning a DP, and anyone trying to take him out at second usually wound up in a heap. You don't get in the hall for batting alone -ask Ozzie Smith.
So voters, who would you kick out? A legendary second baseman, or a guy who got his wins by cheating?

Forfeited Turn

I'm really stoked for this TD! I want to see how you're going to argue against Perry and who Goodell chooses.

Good luck guys. This should be good.

Report Offensive Comment

I really wanted this topic for my matchup against Ram.

Report Offensive Comment

Perry is a good choice...so is Rizzuto, IMO.

Report Offensive Comment

Perhaps Kiki Cuyler

Report Offensive Comment

Besides was Perry even the worst choice in his draft class? I'd take him over Fergie Jenkins.

Report Offensive Comment

Catfish Hunter, Bill Mazeroski and Tony Perez have no business being in the Hall.

Report Offensive Comment

Hunter and Perez yes, but besides hitting that homer against the Yanks, Mazeroski was one of the best fielding second basemen ever.

Report Offensive Comment

Wow, why can't guys wait until both sides pick their person before telling the world their own?

Report Offensive Comment

I know Goodell doesn't need help, but jeez.

Report Offensive Comment

I'm not sure if Goodell is near his computer today...I havn't been able to raise him. I will withhold further comment on my choice until he responds.

Report Offensive Comment

Although I will say I was able to put together a list of ten pretty quickly.

Report Offensive Comment

i dk about baseball, but in the NFL.. OJ Simpson

Report Offensive Comment

Ozzie Smith.

Report Offensive Comment

I agree- Let both sides argue before making suggestions. Perry is a good start.

Incidentally, I had a great fantasy baseball team a few years back that I called the Gay Lord Perrys. So witty.

Report Offensive Comment

My team was the Peter North Stars. Excellent choice on the Perrys.

Report Offensive Comment

Ozzie Smith?! The Wizard? You must be crazy :)

Report Offensive Comment

FC-No I'm not. Tell me what he did that he belongs in the HOF.

I'm glad he took Maz, by the way...I'm strapped to defend him next.
