UGA should be ranked #1 in the NCAA football preseason polls going into the 2008 season.

Call me a homer all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that UGA should be #1 in the preseason polls going into the 2008 season.

Choose any other team that should be ranked #1. if you want, choose multiple teams you think should be #1 in front of Georgia; just explain why each team as a whole should be ranked #1, just no combining Oklahoma's O-line w/ WVU's backfield w/ Ohio State's D to construct your own team cause this ain't no all-star race.

I know it's a long time until the end of August, but a little bickering should help to pass the time until then.

I think USC should be ranked # 1. They have a lot of their players coming back also. Along with that they too were on a hot streak at the end of the season winning their last 5 games.

The Trojans might be losing some key players but they have some pretty good backups there. Replacing Booty will probably be Sanchez or Mustain, the transfer from Arkansas. They always have great running backs, and their defense will probably be awesome again.

USC has depth; there's no doubt about that. It's just experience they lack.

Replacing the QB, practically the entire offensive line, RB, leading reciever who just so happens to be another possible OL is not an easy task especially when the receiving core underperformed. Plus, Mustain should've done better with McFadden and Jones behind him, and Sanchez lost to the only real team that he started against last season (Oregon w/ Dixon).
On D, they replace 5 more (2DL, 1LB, and 1DB), but it will still be pretty good.

Georgia returns more experienced players with 17/22 coming back for another go round (8 on O and 9 on D).

We know that either one of these are going to be number one. Whoever that might be the other will be number 2.

USC might be replacing those players, but with players who have been on the team. They will know Carroll's offense and defense, and they understand how he operates.

I was actually expecting somone to pick Ohio State b/c they have 18/22 guys coming back next season. 2008 was supposed to be their year like UGA, but Tressel managed to get them in the title game still in '07. I've actually seen USC ranked as low as 5 in the pre-preseason rankings on cfn.scout.com, and I attribute that to replacing so many starters. I don't care if you are QB-U, losing your veteran still hurts. Heck, even Carson Palmer wasn't great until his last year at USC.

Sure the USC guys probably know Carroll's system, but the same can be said of Richt's players.

The fact is that Georgia has more experienced starters, and that bodes well for any team. Stafford took his lumps in '06, and he improved in '07. Now he's going to have complete control of the team b/c Bobo (OC) is giving him more freedom calling audibles b/c of his experience. Mustain and Sanchez don't have the same experience as Staf. Even Moreno got the ball more than McKnight, and he was able to carry the load of the rushing attack by himself for a few games. McKnight has always had a couple guys with him, so he hasn't become the go-to guy yet.

Granted, this is still very very early, but it was fun TD'in.

Forfeited Turn

pre-season is a joke....

Yeah, the rankings shouldn't be put-out until a few to several weeks in the season. The system is what it is, so we have to go with it. The preseason rankings definitely determine how well a team is ranked at the end of the season though. Think back to 2004 when USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn all finished undefeated and Auburn probably should've been in the title game. Auburn was left out b/c they were ranked #15 going into that season and USC and OU were #1 and #2, so the preseason polls definitely matter.

Auburn was ranked somewhere around #15 that preseason.

good point...i agree with that statement...just not the beginning of the season part though.

Well right now it's far too early to be ranking teams. In todays college game, freshman have a even greater impact on the game than ever before. Last years for example (Georgia's Moreno, T-Tech's Crabtree, W-Virginia's Devine), were just a few offensive players that stumbled to the front of my brain. Let the recruits come in, see how the teams practice, then see who should start as Numero One.

uh ya nice try but no they beat hawaii, who is not even in a bcs conference, thats why they should have a playoff system. vote to michfan!

Much better arguments from How 'bout 'em. People are just voting against you because you are a UGA fan doing a TD about UGA. But, if they bothered to read the TD, you have a much better case than your opponent.

USC's wideouts will be more mature this year and perform as expected. That being said they are the most complete team out there.

Report Offensive Comment

Yeah, Georgia was one of the top recruiting classes.

stafford is the best "future pro" qb in college ive seen in 5 yrs

Ohio State has lost ONE regular season game in the past TWO years, and they are bringing back 18 of 22 starters from last season. The Bucks will start out #1, you are both off.

(not to mention that OSU goes to USC early in the season, winner of that game can coast to the title game)

USC and UGA are both top 5 teams, but USC won their conference and beat a better team in their bowl. I think they get the edge for pre-season #1, aka meaningless ranking.

BSchwartz, I hate to rain on your parade, but there is no way in freaking heck that Ohio State opens at #1. Absolutely no way they will be considered the best team in the land to start the season after getting thumped in the Title game again. They'll have to disprove a lot of people who will now just assume that the Big 10 is weak, and USC, or whoever the consensus top SEC team is should be #1.

Whether that's fair or not, you know that's how it will be.

Going to go with Georgia. I know SC has the talent but they have to replace a lot of it. The voters may go with the Georgia team that is returning just about everybody.

First off OSU didn't get "thumped", they actually beat themselves. Look at the numbers they played a better game, but had pendalties at all the wrong times (not to mention that first TD from LSU wasn't even a legal play). Either way you look at it OSU has a tough schedule next season, so that excuse is out. and NO ONE CAN MATCH 1 Regular season loss in 2 years.

As for the SEC, they showed that they are the best, but not by a whole lot. Michigan and Wisconsin showed that they can play with SEC teams. FSU's JV squad showed us that Kentucky wasn't all to good to being with. And Mizzou showed that Arkansas was complete garbage.

i'll call him a homer....but i agree with him...vote <-----------

I think UGA should be ranked #1 and it's not because they are in the SEC the fact is they have more "key" players returning then any other team in the nation. On top of that they finished the season just as good as USC. I wish USC and UGA could've played against each other in a bowl game last season.

Heheh, thanks Duquesne.

BSchwartz, they have a tough schedule, so if they run it, they will have earned #1. No question. But your battling peoples perceptions. The voters would not put them at #1 even if they returned their entire team. I think the SEC is vastly overrated as you do, but that does not change that most voters will look at the SEC and say "best team from the best conference. They must be #1!"

They're morons, but that's still the way the vote will go.
