I like Matt Ryan. I see him being the first quarterback taken on Draft Day. I think Atlanta would be his perfect fit. He will easily elevate the play of everyone around him, and will rejuvenate Alge Crumpler back to Pro Bowl status. This guy has everything. Brains, size, an arm, and don't forget he is clutch. Just ask anybody in Blacksburg about how he was in that midseason game. He comes alive when the game is most on the line and he will bring star power back to Atlanta.

So when we go to Blacksburg and ask the people how clutch Ryan is they will forget the ACC title game?

I mean
33-52 305 yards 0 TD and 2 INT in a 30-16 LOSS isn't exactly the best game I have ever seen.

So that was one game right? Not quite, Matt Ryan had 7 games this year with multiple INT, SEVEN. This guy was picked twice against Army.

The only reason that Ryan seemed clutch was that on occasion he would get himself out of the hole that he dug.

We all saw BC rise to the top only to see Ryan lose his teams title hopes along with his Heisman hopes with back to back losses against Clemson and FSU.

Ryan's 56 TD's to 27 INT hardly looks like top pick material, add to that his (are you ready for this?) 58 CAREER yards rushing, yeah that's 58 yards in 4 years, to say that he lacks mobility would be like saying that the Patriots are above average, quite an understatement.

Don't let a few spots on Sports Center confuse you and make this guy out to be a franchise QB.

My pick for top QB in the draft? Andre Woodson,
Woodson threw 79 TD's (23 more than Ryan) to 25 INT (2 less than Ryan) in a MUCH tougher SEC. Ryan 807 Attempts to Woodson's 791. Apples to apples.

Being born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, I will agree with you that the SEC is far tougher than other conferences.

Moving on though, Boston College had many problems that hurt Matt Ryan in many games. That VT game? The hokies have a pretty stingy defense and the eagles don't exactly have a good line. All I'm saying is, give him more time to throw the ball and he will produce. Matt Ryan is more accurate than Andre Woodson could hope to be.

And don't get me started on his mobility. Running across the line of scrimmage to pick up yards is not an issue. It's all about avoiding defenders in the backfield and avoiding a sack. Ryan excels in doing this as you saw in the first VT meeting on his game-winning TD pass. Those last two minutes he put that team on his back and carried them. Woodson had many weapons to go to. Of course, Ryan will have to put Atlanta on his back and carry them, and I think he will.

I hate to say this but you walked into one here.

You say that "Matt Ryan is more accurate than Andre Woodson could hope to be"

Ryan's Career numbers
807-1347 that's a Completion % of 59.9%

Woodson
791-1278 for a completion % of 61.9%

I don't know that Woodson dreams of being LESS accurate, but whatever.

Then you say that Ryan played a "stingy" VT defense
In Two games he had 2 TD's to 4 INT, pretty sure that D got the best of him

Now Woodson faced a MUCH better D when he played LSU (you know the national Champs)

Woodson- 21-38 250 Yards 3 TD's to 2 INT

And against the National Champs from the year before (Florida)

Woodson- 35-50 415 Yards 5 TD's to 0 INT (yeah 5 TD's)

In UK's biggest games Woodson came up HUGE, but I like Apples to Apples, so

Ryan vs.
FSU- 26-53 415 yds. 2 TD's to 3 INT
Woodson vs.
FSU- 32-50 358 yds. 4TD's to 1 INT

Woodson is more accurate, throws to his own team, and hits the endzone more, all things I look for in a starting QB, how about you?

I never was a stat guy. This guy's teammates call him ''matty ice'' cause he's calm, cool, and collected all the time. He has the size at 6' 5''. He is extremely intelligent and a heck of an NFL prospect. The Falcons want a franchise player who will say the right things and sell all the jerseys Vick did. That guy is Matt Ryan.

Alright so lets say I'm looking to take a QB early in this year's draft so far it has broken down like this.

Woodson
-Thrown 23 MORE TD's than Ryan
-Thrown 2 Less INT than Ryan
-Come up biggest in big games (including a 5 TD game against Florida, and beating the current national champion with a TD pass in triple OT)
-Has a much better completion % than Ryan
-Has played better against common opponents
-Put up better numbers all around while facing UGA, LSU, FLA, AUB, at the same time Ryan was taking on UNC, GT, Wake, Maryland, and Duke.

Add in that you say Matt Ryan has "NFL Size"
Ryan- 6-5" 218 Pounds
Woodson- 6-5" 230 Pounds
Seems like Woodson EVEN WINS THAT.

Now on to Ryan
Ryan
-Thrown 7 clutch TD's (unfortunately all of those TD's were to the wrong team)
-Had more INT than TD's in his biggest games
-7 Multi INT games this year
-But this is a big one, KNOWN AS "MATTY ICE"

So that's what you have got huh? Matty ICE, a team should invest their entire franchise in this guy b/c he as a lame nickname.

I don't know about the voters here, but I'm just not convinced.

So far, better arguement by BSchwartz. Right now, I will vote for him. But, if Undefeated Begins With12 comes with two very powerful arguements, which are better than BSchwartz's arguements, then I will vote to the left, but right now, I am voting to the right.

January 25, 2008  08:55 PM ET

what if I have 2 more good arguments dyhard? JK

January 25, 2008  09:14 PM ET

Have to run, I'll have to finish this up tomorrow, but just a thought, when you make a statement try to have something to back it up next time.

January 25, 2008  10:04 PM ET

this is one of those arguement vs point TDs cuz Ryan prolly will be the first to get picked, but BS has sucha better arguement its not even funny
however ive always gone to the better point

January 25, 2008  10:14 PM ET

by the way, Matt Ryan skipped the senior bowl, and pissed off all the scouts who were ther and didnt get to compete with the other QB's which doesnt look good in the eyes of the NFL

January 25, 2008  10:17 PM ET

Ryan had nothing around him at BC. His WRs were average, his O-line was horrible, and his RBs are average as well.

I think everyone's forgetting Chad Henne too. We all saw how good he is when he's healthy in the Gator Bowl.

January 25, 2008  10:34 PM ET

Oh and BS Woodson has been most inimpressive at the Senior Bowl >_>

January 25, 2008  10:34 PM ET

unimpressive*

January 25, 2008  10:41 PM ET

a better throwdown would be who SHOULD be taken, not who will be taken. In that case it's Woodson. In fact, there are two or three QBs that are better than Ryan. The kid had 19 INTs in a single season. He wasn't that good and shouldn't be a first round pick. If he came out last year he would have been around the 6th or 7th QB taken

This is a bad QB draft class; there isn't anyone who's going to be able to be a top starter right away. Woodson is good but needs to work on some things, like holding on to the ball too long. He needs to make much quicker decisions and reads to win in the NFL.

January 25, 2008  10:42 PM ET

Brohm is very good, but his poor senior campaign raised some questions about his motivation and leadership. He has all the tools, though, and would do well in a place like Chicago or Atlanta. He needs to work out some consistency issues. Joe Flacco is an interesting player, with fantastic arm strength and great physical tools. He is immobile, however, and played against weaker competition. He'll need a year to adjust to the speed of the NFL. Henne could be better than Ryan as well; he has a lot of momentum from the Gator Bowl and a strong Senior Bowl performance with a good Pro Day could catapult him into a high pick. I think he's more of a wild card than anything else.

January 25, 2008  10:45 PM ET

Matty Ice may be the worst nickname ever.. who would want to be nicknamed after a crappy beer? Matty Ice's teams often managed to win in spite of him; he had 7 picks returned for touchdowns. As for his surrounding players, on OL Gosder Cherilus is going to be a first round pick. His surrounding talent wasn't top tier but it wasn't mid major level either.

January 25, 2008  11:49 PM ET

The Ryan agrument is not that good.....but still I agree he will be the 1st QB taken

January 25, 2008  11:57 PM ET

Woodson's stock is dropping fast...he may not even be drafted in the first round. The scouting reports say his release is really really slow.

January 26, 2008  01:21 AM ET

I dont really understand why your just not arguing why he is going to be the top pick... there really is no debating that matt ryan will go before andre woodson.

January 26, 2008  02:24 AM ET

ryan will probably be first taken....but my vote goes to BS because he actually convinced me woodson is better

January 26, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I think Chad Henne becomes a better pro than Matt Ryan. As do Brian Brohm and Andre Woodson. The first thing I want in a quarterback is a guy who I can hand the ball to and tell him not to turn it over. Ryan has that gunslinger mentality where he wants to force the issue even when there is nothing there. I don't like quarterbacks to have that.

The best out of these four is probably Brian Brohm. I used to think the best quarterback was Andre Woodson, but if you pay more attention to him, he needs more polishing. Brohm has a rocket arm, he's deadly accurate, he doesn't make bad decisions, and he's got tremendous poise. The way Brian Brohm moves around in the pocket is reminiscent of Tom Brady.

January 26, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Is anyone in the draft nicknamed something like "gunslinger" by any chance? That's who I would argue based on nickname. Atleast something like that or atleast like"Joe cool" or "The Comeback Kid" or some thing that doesn't sound like S***ty beer that needs penguins to sell. Matt Ice, doo bee doo bee doo. . .

January 26, 2008  11:21 AM ET

-Thrown 7 clutch TD's (unfortunately all of those TD's were to the wrong team) -

Priceless.

Good insight from Humbug as well.

Honestly believe that Matt Ryan will go before Woodson, but BSchwartz has the better argument and my vote.
