He was a bad G.M. and he is god awful on Baseball Tonight. I can't stand him. And his predictions are so off. He said that Dice-k wasn't going to Boston and that Bobby Abreu was gonna get traded to the Cardinals at the trade deadline last year. He says the same thing all the time. AND HE'S WRONG!!!!!!!
I don't know why ESPN likes him so much.
He was a very bad G.M., too.
He wanted to trade David Wright when he was in the minors. The reason I didn't make a blog about this(which I will) is because I want to see if anybody out there likes him. Don't take this throwdown and then complain about it. At least it is something different.

First of all, Steve Phillips may not be the best analyst on baseball tonight, but that does not make him an idiot by any means. All of ESPN's analysts are stupid for the most part, but sometimes Phillips can have something worthwhile to say.
Second, he might go down in Mets history as their third best GM...yes, best. Omar Minaya would be their second best, and Frank Cashen, building the 1980's Mets powerhouse (Gooden, Kingman, Foster, Carter, Davey Johnson, etc) , would be their best.

The Mets haven't had the greatest histroy, so being 3rd best doesn't say much. And how can you say he is not more of an idiot then the other guys? Did you see what he said in my first statement? He is there to bring some inside info because he is a former G.M. He knows as much as my killer cat.(go to my images if you want to see my killer cat)

We're talking about the GM who brought in guys like Al Leiter, Mike Piazza, Robin Ventura, Mike Hampton, Derek Bell, Timo Perez, Armando Benitez, Ricky Henderson, Lenny Harris...should I go on? The late 90's were the best years for the Mets. Phillips brought in Bobby Valentine to manage, who I remind you is 2nd in wins and games and 3rd in winning percentage all time in Mets history, which also brought a lot of excitement to the Mets, especially in 1999/2000.

The Mets got all those guys and they didn't even win a championship.
Here are some bad ones:
Bernitz
Mo Vaughn
Roger Cedeno
In the Roberto Alomar trade talks, Phillips was offering Jose Reyes to the Indians!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine that.
He was offering Wright for Jose Cruz who ended up batting .245
Imagine if those trades went in order like Phillips wanted them to.

He shaped the Mets future. Do you know some of the guys he drafted? AaronHeilman, Lenny DiNardo (who is on Oakland now), Scott Kazmir (you know that story..thanks Duquette), Lastings Milledge, Brian Bannister, and Danny Garcia. It doesn't matter who he offered..it never happened. Not to mention most of the stuff that you hear was "offered" is just rumor. I'm not trying to say he was the greatest GM ever and he will be in the Hall of Fame. All I'm saying is he wasn't bad.
