The offensive line is the most important position. Every play starts with the o-line. Even if you have a Peyton Manning or a Reggie Bush, they can't do anything with defensive lineman tackling them in the backfield.
Levon said 05/29, 02:59 PM
I would say the Defensive line is the most important position. Good D-Lines can stuff the run and make the other team one dimentional and then colapse the pocket and make the QB throw the ball too soon. This gives the DB a chance to be extra aggresive at the line of scrimage and frees up the LBs to blitz at will.
Go IU said 05/29, 03:06 PM
Good point. however, the d-line can't do anything if they're too tired because their offensive linemen let their qb get sacked and the running back tackled for a 5 yard loss.
Levon said 05/29, 03:32 PM
I always believed that the lines are the most important part of a good football team, however I think it's easier to work around a sub-par O line than it is a sub-par D line. On Offense you have options, using no-huddle to tire the D, using short passing routes, lots of screens and misdirection, all are strategies to neutralize a strong pass rush. A weak D line means that your LBs and safeties have to commit more to the run, thereby opening more passing lanes, it also mean your CBs have to stay in coverage longer, opening up longer routes and double moves
Go IU said 05/29, 03:39 PM
Trust me, I've played o-line for about 10 years know and nothings more tiring than using a no huddle offense, short passes, and screens and misdirections. Especially with a sub-par o-line. It may tire a defense also, but you see more substitutions on a defense than on an offense. If you have a great O-line that you can use all of those D tiring strategies. If you can find great offensive linemen, you can win. It's almost impossible to beat a team with a great o-line.
Levon said 05/29, 03:53 PM
Denver has a pretty good O-line, they didn't make the playoffs, PITT has a pretty good O-line, the didn't make the playoffs, KC has a pretty good O-line and barely made the playoffs. Barry Sanders never had a O-line in DET, Walter Peyton played behind some pretty bad lines, Marino had some suspect lines in Miami too (just look at their rushing totals). A bad D-line mean man on man blocking which leaves 1 or 2 O-lineman free at the second level (hindering your LBs). If your D-Line can't stop the run, then you will have running backs 3-4 yards past the line of scrimmage before first contact.

i would agree with colt 24/7 on this one, if you look at all the superbowl or superbowl calliber teams they all had good or great o-lines you dont see peyton or brady eating grass to often, seahawks when they went ,they had the best in the league and their counterparts that year were opening up holes for bettis the size of rhode island ,if u want to go back further look at the cowboys with troy and emmit 3 of those guys on the o-line are in the hall or will be..

Right Jeff Saturday and Dwight Freeny were the keys for the Colts, not Peyton Manning.

Im not voting because it's aguably the RB. If you're back can dip and dodge tackles, as well as turn on the jets in open field situatiatioons, you're team is in safe hands because your QB has a safe player, and the RB is always a threat. O line is important but when the entire defense is watching one player, it gives the rest of your team a better chance for success.

without o-line its pretty much the equivelent of 1 on 6 or 7. I don't know any RB that can take on those odds.

RB? WHAT A DUMBA$$!!! C'mon, look what Denver's O-Line has done for every RB they have had. Look what Edge has done in Arizona, NOTHING. The O-Line makes the RB. If I had to chose 1 player, it would have to be a QB of course. If I had to chose from position, I would say a D-Front including LB's would be just as important as the O-Line. They kinda go hand in hand. If you can keep your QB off of his back, then you are doing good. But if you cant get to their QB, then you are doing just as bad as you are good with the O-Line. Make Sense? A lot of points would result, not necessarily a championship.

It's relatively simple - the o-line controls the line of scrimmage, moving the ball through the air or on the ground. It puts the opposing defense back on their heels. It keeps your defense off the field and well rested with lone drives. It allows you to score points, putting the opposition in a position to where they become one dimensional by throwing to try to get back in the gameor get better field position. It's been said, without the o-line, the QB doesn't get time to throw and the RB doesn't get yardage.

Right, everyone is ignorant aside from yourself, that's a respectable viewpoint to take.

Red Zone, I can make the exact same arguement for the D-line. a good one allows you to control the line of scrimmage and forces the O to be one dimensional. With a good D-line, the QB doesn't have time to throw and the RB doesn't get yardage.
I realize it's something of a chicken vs Egg arguement but I just think it's easier to work around a sub par O-line than it is a sub par D-line. You look at what players like Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Marino were able to do without great lines. At the same time you wounder would someone like Champ Bailey be as effective without a decent D-line, he can't cover a guy all day if he reciever has 7-8 seconds every play to get open.

You score on offense. not defense. while the defense is very important, the offense is just as important. You just proved my point by saying that Champ Bailey can't cover a guy when a QB has 7-8 of even 3-4 seconds to throw the ball. You can make it with a crappy D-line. All you have to do is blitz the linebackers.

Ahhh but you see grasshopper, overcommitting to the blitz opens up the middle of the field for the TE and RBs out of the backfield.
Anyway, this made for a fun discussion.
Just for the record, if I was scoring at home I'd probably rank the positions something like this:
1A) D-Line
1B) O-Line
2) QB
3) LB
4) RB
5) DB
6) Receivers
