The Red Sox should not offer anything more than Lester, Crisp, Masterson, and Lowri offer to get Santana
Ellsbury Rocks said 01/27, 08:09 PM
Ever since early December Johan Santana has been on the market and the Red Sox were one of teams interested. I think they should not offer anything more than that offer to get him for three reasons.
1. Jacoby Ellsbury wil be a multiple MVP winner and Clay Buchoulz will become better than Santana. Trading one of these two, Ellsbury and Lester, or both would make the Red Sox look like the Yankees. Our minor leauge system was ranked number two in Assotiated Press rankings so why ruin the future for a mere 5-7 years. Ellsbury is a 24 year old CF who already has shown he can hit in the majors. Him and Pedoria will be the nasties leadoff and number two hitter combo for years to come and why ruin that. In 3-5 years he will hit his prime and be an MVP. Has potential to be a .300+ hitter with 50+ steals and 10-25 homers a year. As for Buchoulz, he's a guy that already has thrown a no-hitter showing he's major leauge ready and the +6 prospect in the leauge. He will become better then Santana in three years so why trade 12-16 years of Cy Young pitching for 5-7 years. Instead of trading one of these guys the Red Sox should build their team for next 12-16 years around them and Pedoria.

Well, there is waiting to (hopefully) win in the future, or there is putting the best team possible on the field right now and going for it all. Consider where the Red Sox stand right now as a team. Sure they have some nice young talent on its way up, but they also have some really big guns who are in their prime right now, but will not be in a few years.
Guys like Manny...Big Pappi...Schill...
They have a heck of a nucleus and could cement their rotation with a guy like Santana added to the mix. So it comes down to this. Do you want to win NOW by adding to the proven talent you have in place? Or do you want to wait a few years and HOPE that the young guys pan out?
I've seen too many teams pin all their hopes on the "next big thing" working his way up the minors. And I've seen those teams crash and burn when that guy winds up being not quite so big a thing.
With the talent they have in the bigs RIGHT NOW, I say win now, worry about the future later. Don't mortgage the entire future, but if it takes a real stud minor leaguer to land Santana, don't be afraid to pull the trigger.

2. There is a ton of good potential free agent starting pitchers next year and closers unless extensions are worked out. First of all Santana might be a free agent and so will be last years Cy Young winner C.C Sabathia, John Lackey, A.J Burnett, Brad Penny and Ben Sheets. When you could get a player like Sabathia or Lackey that is only a little less talented than Santana for just money instead of prospects and money why not wait for that. If we waited for free angency of next year to get a quality starting pitcher then our rotation at best could be Santana/Sabathia, Beckett, Dice K, Clay, and Wake/Schill/Lester for next five years at least and potentially longer. At worst we get Beckett, Burnett, Sheets, Dice K, Clay, and Wake/Schill/Lester. Also if we got a closer like K-Rod then Paps could become a starter and our rotation will be Beckett, Clay, Dice K, Paps, and Wake/Schill/Lester.
3. Adding another 25 million dollars to the second largest payroll will make us look more like the Evil Empire than ever before. Our luxury Tax would go up and that means prices of tickets would also go up. Please Theo stick with the kids instead of being Yankee like

Santana has a 6.89 career ERA in Fenway Park which is his highest career ERA in any ballpark. However, your argument about Ellsbury becoming a multiple MVP award winner and Buchholz becoming a better pitcher then Santana is completlely ridiculous.

Unlike players that are supposed to be next great thing- Buchoulz and Ellsbury proved last year they could compete in the big leauges. You are right that it is not a certanity they will be great but there is a very high chance that they will be. Guys like Manny...Big Pappi...Schill... all had injury filled or a production lacking year last year. Manny and Schill might be gone after this year and Big Papi will only be around for about 3-5 more years. Not getting Santana may cost us World Series this year but after getting more experience Clay and Ellsbury will give us more titles than he would because they will be producing longer than he would.

Far too much speculation. I love Ellsbusy and Buchoulz has great potential, but to say that Jacoby will definitely win multiple MVPs and Buchoulz will be better than arguably the best pitcher of the last five years...well there is just no way to know that.

he has a 6.89 ERA in Fenway, because each of those starts was against the Red Sox, Let him pitch against the D-rays and Orioles in Fenway and that ERA will go down alot, if he's on the Sox he doesn't have to face the Sox anymore, ''

Trade Angelos-- Where did you get 6.89 anyway? He's given up 5 runs in 2 innings, which is actually 4.16 unless **** **** at math, Is it great? NO but its pretty good against the SOX
