There is no way that I can win this Throwdown based on that statement.

The real Throwdown: When arguing how great a player is, stats alone aren't nearly good enough to prove your point.

In no particular order:
Montana
Marino
Elway
Young
Manning
Unitas
Brady
Aikman
Staubach
Kelly
Bradshaw
Favre
Starr
Tarkington

That is 14 all time great quarterbacks just off the top of my head and I am sure I missed some. Just using my list, you would have to make a case that Kreig is better than 5 of these. Which 5?

You are all missing the point. My throwdown is to argue the validity of statistical data when judging how good (or bad) that data points them out to be. I am over throwdowns where someone states "Well seeing as how player A was ranked 5th in receptions and player B was ranked 10th, that CLEARLY means that player A is way better than player B."

Dave Krieg happens to be ranked in the top 10 of most career statistical categories. It was a metaphor people.

Quarterback is generally accepted as the most important position on a football team. The 14 players I listed have all taken teams to the Superbowl. Winning the superbowl is the ultimate goal of any NFL team and 11 of these 14 players did just that. Many statistics are a product of longevity and do not necessarily translate to team success.

Coach, I think you are basically agreeing with my argument then. I think that maybe I should have been a bit more direct in the subject of the throwdown. Nothing against you Coach because your arguments are all well taken despite the fact that it wasn't what I was actually arguing over. Lesson to all you offensive chumps with the comments: READ THE WHOLE ARGUMENT BEFORE BEING AN ****!

I think that you are being pompous when you say you will have to dumb it down a little bit next time. When you are trying to make a point the onus is upon you to make your self understood. If no one here understood your point then you must assume you failed to make it. It is not my intention to insult, I just found your tone with the others to be insulting whether or not that was your intention.

both of you are idiots. andres, dont trick people into thinking that that is your argument, you shouldve just said what your argument was. and as for you coach, i dontt even think you read his argmuent, you just thought it would be an easy win.

May 29, 2007  05:41 PM ET

still would rather give the win to him than have someone try and trick someone to get a win out of it.

May 29, 2007  05:44 PM ET

top college receiver rankings are out, check the blog.

I read his argument, I didn't use stats. He didn't state facts he stated opinion. I listed 14 quarterbacks generally accepted as all-time greats. I am leaving it up to him to give a good arguement as to why Krieg is better than any 5 of them. If he can't I have made my point without the use of stats!

May 29, 2007  05:50 PM ET

Stats alone aren't enough. You need to put them in context. What a dumb throwdown Andres. If you wanted to say something blog it.

May 29, 2007  05:51 PM ET

I don't see anything wrong with Coaches point, it is opinion and he states 14 in his opinion that are/were better then krieg, and i agree on those 14. Stupid on andres

May 29, 2007  06:06 PM ET

This is my first try at the throwdown. I took the first one that popped up. I don't necessarily disagree that it wasn't a great argument to try and make but I didn't make it. I am just trying to get into the game. I do however think that we got your point rfcodding, after the first 3 times you stated that you thought the throwdown should be thrown out never mind 5.

May 29, 2007  06:13 PM ET

"When arguing how great a player is, stats alone aren't nearly good enough to prove your point."

An equally stupid thing to do, dcalamri, is not read the whole opening argument.

May 29, 2007  06:44 PM ET

I read it, but that is your arguemnet. The Throwdown is the title, Dave Krieg Is The 10th Best NFL QB Of All Time. Because you presented us with another throwdown statement in your arguement, it doesn't make the new Throwdown which we are voting for. It makes it a waste. If that were the case on my 3rd arguement when i was losing i could just change what it is.

May 29, 2007  07:26 PM ET

Well, next time I won't try to put my Throwdowns in context so as to make sure not present anything in favor of my argument. In other words, maybe dumb it down a bit.

May 29, 2007  07:36 PM ET

Andres, you crack me up, keep up the good work!

May 29, 2007  08:26 PM ET

i have no idea who this guy is

May 29, 2007  08:34 PM ET

Wasn't trying to get anyone's feathers in a ruffle Coach, but when people start hurling insults I can't help but get just a little snippy.

keep it us andres. don't let the turkeys get you down. of course Dave Kried is the 10th best qb of alltime. stats don't lie, right? heh. heh.

May 29, 2007  08:44 PM ET

peyton and archie

May 29, 2007  09:14 PM ET

[MOH] Coach didn't even read the opening argument! Sure, andres shouldn't have tried to fool people with the fake title, but seriously; you're supposed to read the argument, not jump right in based on the title.

May 29, 2007  09:21 PM ET

Why do you think he didn't read the arguement? If you read the topic of the Throwdown, which is about David Kreig, and then say in your arguemnet Stats aren't everything, one would assume you are saying that even though he is not the tops in stats, David Kreig is top 10. Coach counters with 14 others without mentioning stats that he thinks are better. Sounds like he read it to me, maybe he just was confused by the Two topics like everyone else was

May 30, 2007  09:21 AM ET

Hey Chrono, If YOU read everything said, I admitted to having not quite understanding what Andres was trying to argue. He and I have exchanged private PMs and have put the issue behind us. I attempted to restate my arguments to fit however, I tend to agree that stats alone do not tell the whole story. The argument could have been stated more clearly as it seems to have confused most of us. Like I stated previously, this was my first attempt at participating and I was just trying to get my feet wet. I will attempt to read the challenges more clearly in the future.

Yep. I met with Coach in the office, thankfully I didn't have to turn in my playbook! If anything it's been entertaining. Thanks to Coach and congrats on his first victory!
