I got this topic from ESPN.com, where they listed all the top QB's from each decade. I was absolutely shocked when I saw Steve Young ahead of John Elway. There was other stiff competition, with the honorable mentions including Elway, Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, and Warren Moon. John Elway won 2 Super Bowls in the 90's, Made it to 3 Super Bowls (including the one that was held in 1990),was named MVP in one of those Super Bowls, 6 Pro Bowls, 1 AFC Offensive MVP, and 3 AFC West Titles. Elway was the greatest QB in the 90's.

Stan Humphries is the greatest QB of the 90's........J/K

Elway is in the top 5 all time on my list, that is for sure. However there are QB's better then Elway. Look what Young did since he took over for Montana in '92

7 straight PBs
7 straight ALL-PROS
2 NFL MVPS
6 NFC WEST Titles
1 SB win ( 2 more SB's as a back up in the 80's)
1992 NFL Offensive Player of the Year
NFL Record 43 rushing TD's for a QB
3rd highest rating to finish a season (Manning and Brady)
Has the hghest CARRER passer rating in NFL history

All 7 years as SF's starter the 49ers won 10 or more games. 4 out of the 7 years they won 12 or more games. Steve young is not in the top 5 QB's of all time on my list...But ESPN is correct, he is the BEST QB of the 90's

Elway could've had a better chance to get more division titles, had there not been 5 teams. The NFC West however, were the only team without 5 teams for a while. Also, John Elway's favorite receivers were Mark Jackson-1990, Mike Young1992, Shannon Sharpe-1992-1994, 1996-1997, Anthony Miller-1995, and in 1998, Rod Smith. 5 years it was a TE. And MAYBE two of these guys are HOF worthy. Steve Young's favorite targets. In 1997 it was Terrell Owens. In the rest of the years, it was soon-to-be HOFer, and maybe the greatest player of all time, Jerry Rice. Steve Young had Jerry Rice to throw to, while Elway was stuck with a great TE, but not a WR,and some good WR's, but most of them not even talked about anymore. I don't wanna take anything away from Young, he is a great QB, but it's hard not to be a great QB when you get to throw to the best player in the game.

These 2 were also great scramblers, both running QB's. In this category I would give the edge to Elway because if he ran all the way over to the right sidelines, if he saw that he could throw it to the guy all the way on the other side of the field, he could do it no problem.

Cmon now Lynch, Your better then that. Comparing the WR cores the QB's had??? Please

Steve Young would have broke almost every QB record if he wasnt on the bench for the first 9 years he was in the NFL. How many times do you see a vetran back-up come in and OWN the NFL?? How about never......There are good VET Back ups, but not like Young. If he wasnt in SF he would have been a starter ANYWHERE else. How can you give the rushing edge to Elway???

Elway played 243 games and had 3,407 yds rushing in his career and 33 TD's

Young played 169 games and had 4,329 yds rushing and 43 TD's

Young played 74 less games and has more yds and more TDs. How can you give that edge to Elway??

Comparing WR cores is fine. I'm not taking away anything from Steve, I'm just giving you something to consider.

And why do you think he was on the bench for 9 years? Not cause he was the greatest QB of all time. And nice job sticking the word VETERAN backup in there, cause you know I coulda used Tom Brady to hurt you. JK. But there is a typo in that paragraph. Young did not sit the bench for 9 years. He sat his first year, started his second, and then sat 4 years, but did start in 10 games during that time. So he did get quite a bit of experience in those years. But he wasn't even in the league for nine years when he became the starter for the Niners.

With the rushing, I said rushing AND scrambling. Elway was probably THE best scrambler in the game and one of the best out of the packet QB's in the game. There is a difference between a rushing QB and a scrambling QB.

The bottom line is, these are definitely the 2 greatest QB's of the 1990's. And though some of the stats don't show it, Elway was definitely the better of the 2.

Steve was drafted in 1984....He became the starter in SF in 1992. My bad, thats 8 years

And yes, I did throw VETRAN in there for a very, very good reason. Even if I had not put VET in there, Brady is the only name you could come up with besides Young...

Here is my all time list of QB's

1) Brett
2) Marino
3) Montana
4) Manning
5) Elway

Here is my list of QB's from the 90's

1) Steve Young
2) Troy Aikman
3) John Elway
4) Jim Kelly
5) Warren Moon

Great, my TD buddy

January 30, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Oh, he did all that in only 7 of the 10 years of the 90's decade

Funny, whenever I see the GOAT argument for Brady, they always bring up how great his team is, but yet, a lot of hypocrites are voting for Young, despite a SB team before he was the starter. Also, Young flamed out in the 90s w/ all his concussions. Elway was consistently better, Young had a few great yrs (which only led to 1 SB win)

Elway did more w/ less for longer.

Well then lets take away Bradys '07 performance cause he had Moss, Welker and Stallworth.

January 30, 2008  05:52 PM ET

To say Elway was the best of the 90's is rediculous. Steve Young was rediculous in the 90's... oh, and theres this guy named Troy Aikman who won 3 rings... and another named Brett Favre that did some good things in the 90's.

Elway was great... but not the best

January 30, 2008  05:55 PM ET

12-4 last yr w/out them, 3 SBs w/out them.

Look, don't want to make this into a Brady TD, just making the observation that no one is giving any consideration to Young's SB caliber supporting cast.

OH MY GOD. How is Goodell winning this?

Brett is his #1 alltime, but doesn't even crack his top 5 of 90s?

Farve played 8 full seasons in the 90s, had ALL HIS SUCCESS IN the 90s prior to this yr. He's 3-5 in the 00s in the playoffs, led the league in INTs.

If you're gonna put Farve #1 alltime, you'd better put number 1 in the 90s, or at least on the damn list.

Quit mixinup your meds and you will see what I mean... Brett was a great QB in the 90's but not better then those on my list... His all time legacy began after the 2000 season.

Look at it this way..Bradshaw would be #1 on the list from the 70's but he wont scratch my top 10 list

** My top 10 list all time***

January 30, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Tommie Frazier should be #1. He won two national championships and came very close to becoming the first QB to win three straight titles.

January 30, 2008  06:40 PM ET

00 season? a 78 QB rating, failed to make the playoffs in 00, 05, 06 (5 for 8). Lost 3 of 6 home playoff games (incl 1-1 this yr), 0-2 on the road in the playoffs.

How does his legacy start in 00? Talk about mixin up meds. Is it a top 5 list or a top 10? If you're combining the list, where do the guys from the 90s fit into the alltime.

I still say Farve HAS TO BE ON YOUR 90s LIST if you're going to include him all time talk at all.

January 30, 2008  07:57 PM ET

Has to be Aikman. Only QB ever to win 100 games in a decade and he did it in the 90's. His 3 rings surpass anyone else from that decade, as well.

Elway may not have been the best in the 90's but overall he should be considered to best QB ever. Why? he had half the team young, marino, manning, or brett had and led them to 3 superbowls by himself. If he had a jerry rice, he would have broken all the passing records. Young wouldnt have been nearly as good if he didnt have the talent around him
