LeBron James.
To me, this was an easy answer. Not many people show dislike towards this guy. He is quite possibly the most exciting player to watch in the entire league and everyone is wowed by what he can do on the court. For example, he single-handedly led his team to victory over the Pistons in the Eastern Finals last season.
Next is that he is already a proven endorser. He has endorsed Nike most notable and has done a fantastic job. Every single kid in the world wants the newest LeBron shoes.
King James finished third in jersey sales in 2007 and second in 2006. "The LeBrons" are a great series of advertisements that many people enjoy either watching on TV or seeing a picture of in magazines.
Many of you may say Kobe would be the best but I would say no. He's had legal trouble, is sometimes criticized for hogging the ball, and is on the receiving end of much hate in the NBA.
Others would say Dwyane Wade but injuries and playing for a last place team may not be the best thing to get shoe sales going.
LeBron James is the best choice for repping my shoe company. No one else even compares.
Note: I did not choose this topic; my opponent did.

If I were starting a shoe company I'd use Chris Paul.
Let's see:
You've got a young player, who's incredibly talented, who's revitalized his franchise. Yeah, you'll say "LeBron's got all of that too."
However, I think that Chris Paul is a much more entertaining player who's more marketable than LeBron.
Paul is averaging 21 points a game, 10.7 assists a game, and leads the league in steals with 2.6, and doing this while averaging 2.6 turnovers a game. Yes, he personally gets the ball back as much as he gives it up.
LeBron kills his team at the charity stripe (10 attempts per game, 70% shooter), from three-point range (4.6 attempts per game, 29.8%), and has the same field goal percentage as Paul, while playing inside much more frequently than CP3.
If you had a shoe company that could spend all of the money they wanted to promote Paul over LeBron, I assure you that the company could promote him and the shoe better than Nike and LeBron do now.
Lastly, the "LeBrons" ad campaign was horrible, when you compare it to what ad campaigns have been run by Nike. They weren't enjoyable, they were a drag to watch on TV. James is just not a photogenic person.
G.O.A.T. said 01/31, 06:14 PM
Haha. You want to argue stats? Here we go...
LeBron averages 30 points per game to Paul's 21.
LeBron averages 8 rebounds to Paul's 4.
LeBron averages only 4 less assists even though he isn't a PG and Paul is.
Paul only averages half a steal more per game.
You said that LBJ kills his team with shooting threes in which he's only shot 30%. What are you trying to say? CP3 doesn't shoot much better from deep at 34%. By the way, Paul has shot 2-10 from three point range in his last three games while James has shot 4-12.
You said the LeBrons campaign was "horrible". Tell me, why would it receive a B+ from npr.org then? Besides, what amazing marketing campaigns has Chris Paul been involved in? I can't think of one.
On a side note, I think jersey sales is a good measure of how popular a player is. As I mentioned before, LeBron has consistantly been in the top three. CP3 struggles to crack the top 15.
You said that you could assure me that Paul would prove to be a better endorser given the right opportunity. What gives you that idea? I'm interested. I see LBJ as the best NBA endorser to come around in a long time. Chris Paul doesn't compare from a marketing standpoint.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 01/31, 06:42 PM
You honestly expect a point guard to pull down eight rebounds a game? Jason Kidd is the exception, not the rule.
We're talking long term here. What does the three point shot statistics from THE LAST THREE GAMES have to do with anything? There most definitely are momentary fluctuations in statistics from night to night. If I was going to use what happened in the last game, or what'd happen in the next, I'd point out that LeBron has a sprained ankle. What does that have to do with selling the shoes?
Chris Paul may not shoot much better than LeBron from deep, but he tries less than half the time than LeBron does.
LeBron came in the most hyped NBA draft class of all time (rightfully so, looking at LeBron, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade etc.), while Paul came in one of the least hyped classes (Andrew Bogut was the first pick). LeBron started with a publicity head start.
One more reason I took this TD is that there's no way in hell that you'd be able to pry LeBron away from Nike. That's unrealistic, that'd be the same as taking away MJ. Chris Paul isn't associated with a brand, he'd only be advertising YOUR shoe.
Also, Chris Paul is the #1 player in fantasy this year.
G.O.A.T. said 02/01, 09:39 AM
Woah, hold up. Since when did this throwdown involve my prying LeBron away from Nike? It's not stated in the title. It says I can use ANY active player.
Next, so what if King James had a publicity head start? Wouldn't that make him a better choice to start my shoe company then?
Thirdly, is some kid going to say, "Oh, I want to wear the #1 fantasy player's shoes," or is some kid going to say, "I want to wear the most exciting and popular player in the NBA's shoes?"
If we're talking long term then LeBron definitely is a better choice. He's proven (look at the previous LBJ shoes). Chris Paul hasn't done anything with marketing.
I have one question that you MUST answer in your next argument: If CP3 has no marketing experience whatsoever, what are you basing his future marketing success on?
And do you honestly expect a forward to come up with more steals than a guard?
Bottom Line: This TD never stated that we had to get the players from other companies, it simply stated we could choose anyone we wanted regardless of past endorsements. I chose LeBron James, who is a much better and more proven endorser than Chris Paul.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 02/01, 09:09 PM
I'm saying that people will forever link him with Nike, the same way that Andre Agassi is forever linked with Nike, even though he played the end of his career wearing Adidas.
No, not being hyped out of college means that he's got more potential to grow than LeBron grows. As Paul grows in stardom, he would take my company with him.
I base his success on him never being regarded as dirty, never being charged with a crime, never calling out his ownership, never being a cancer in the locker room, never having anyone ever saying anything bad about him. He's never going to be receiving negative attention; all of his attention will be received because of his play on the court.
Speaking of his play on the court, his status as the #1 player in fantasy means that he's been the best player in the league this year, and so he will be receiving more attention because of that, bringing more attention to my shoes.
Also, I do expect forwards to get steals. It's not as if he just gets to quit playing defense because he's a small forward. Scottie Pippen was a small forward, that never stopped him from averaging nearly 3 steals a game in 1994-95 and from having the most steals in the playoffs

CP3 could be more marketable than Lebron, I think thats the gist of the goblins argument. A shoe company brand new might not want somebody like Lebron, who everybody knows already and associates with NIKE

good arguments by both, but the hype machine has been backing LeBron since he was in high school. no way Chris Paul is in his league in terms of marketability.

Lebron James is one of the three biggest names in the NBA right now, its close between James, Kobe, and Wade. Paul is a great player, don't get me wrong, but even people who don't follow basketball know who Lebron James is. Chris Paul is still not even close to a household name, at least outside of N'Orleans. Votes to G O A T

LeBron definatly. James is more known and is more popular. Maybe if people payed more attention to the NBA, it would be Paul. But now it is James.

I would actually take the BEST player in the game today to do a commmercial, over a RISING star like Chris Paul. You need to take this from an economic and business angle. More people want to see people they recognize. You put a face of Chris Paul and LeBron James, who is going to catcht their eye first? LeBron James will, because he is the more talented player, and he has very much NBA Popularity.

Thehemogoblin, good throwdown, but I could just as easily say that Scottie Pippen is the exception, not the rule like you did with J-Kidd and rebounding point guards.
