First arguement just list...

My team- the New York Mets

Okay, you took the team of the moment so I'll take:

San Diego Padres

Ok, thats a pretty good choice that you made... Lets compare players...
Mets pitchers-
John Maine- 15-10, ERA of 3.91, 180 Ks
Oliver Perez- 15-10, ERA of 3.56, 174 Ks
Johan Santana- 15-13, ERA of 3.33, 235 Ks, 2 time Cy-Young award
Pedro Martinez- 3-1, ERA of 2.57, 32 Ks
Orlando Hernandez- 9-5, ERA of 3.72, 128 Ks
Padres Pitchers-
Jake Peavy- 19-6, ERA of 2.54, 240 Ks
Greg Maddux- 14-11, ERA of 4.14, 104 Ks
Chris Young- 9-8, ERA of 3.12, 167 Ks
Randy Wolf- 9-6, ERA of 4.73, 94 Ks
Mark Prior- 1-6, ERA of 7.21, 38 Ks

The Mets have no one with a ERA of over 4.00 while the Padres have 3 players who do. The Mets have 1 player with less than 100 Ks while the Padres have 2. The Mets only have one player with less than 10 wins (not counting Pedro as he only played 5 games...) while the Padres have 3. Overall the Mets have better pitching.

The Mets scored 63 more runs than the Padres this season but gave up about 90 more. However the Padres have a top 5 D. Also the Mets still gave up the 11th least runs while the Padres scored the 20th most runs.

I am running out of room so will explain offense in next arguement.

Not going to count Pedro and Prior (who had under 100 due to lack of pitching same as Pedro - don't forget that). Neither one is what they used to be.

Perez is highly inconsistent throughout his entire career and Maine is still young.

Maddux, though old as dirt, still is good for 15 wins. El duque is inconsistent but has to be healthy. Not going to touch Santana - all he needs to do is adjust to the NL and he'll be a CY Young candidate.

Peavy - almost the same as Santana (Santana is better overall pending NL adjustment).

Young - if his injury from the end of last season is over, he will be in the Cy Young race again.

The Mets are in a tough division, where the Braves and Phillies can catch them or should I remind you what happened last season.

The Padres are in a division where the Diamondbacks gave up more runs than they scored (fluke way to win a division) and the Rockies had to win 20 in a row to win the division.

The Padres stand a better chance of making the playoffs than the Mets do.

To win the NL, you have to make it to the playoffs first and there is a better chance for the Mets to miss out than the Padres.

Perez has not been so inconistent lately and his consistency will improve as he gets older. He will be more consistent now as he is in his 4th MLB season...

Maine is definetely not to young to tell about. He was a huge prospect in Baltimore and played well there. When he came to the Mets he was an instant star also. He and Perez also tied for 8th in the NL in wins last year. Maine also ranked 6th in the NL in Ks. Perez ranks 10th in the NL in Ks. Neither of them are to young to tell about...

Maddox and Hernandez are both getting older and will decline at about the same rate. I can't see either of them topping 10 wins next year...

Santana and Peavy are equal pretty much...

Young might recover sure but will he? You can't base things on guesses. As of now Young was hurt last year and even when healthy could not top 10 wins . He also got 8 losses.

You think that the Mets play in a harder division than the Padres? The Padres had every team but 1 in their division have a winning record. They had 2 90 game winners in their division while the Mets had none! The Mets also had 2 bottom 5 teams in the NL in their division. The NL East is way harder than the West!

Yes, the NL East is harder than the West (quoting your final statement from your last argument). THat is my whole point.

Another quote - You can't base things on guesses. What do you think any projection TD is? If you are predicting who will win the NL next season, you are basing everything on guesses.

Maddux got 14 Ws last season, for all we know he could end up with 20. We don't know. All we can do for this TD is take a wild guess. You went with the team that just because they got Santana everyone believes they will win. Before they got Santana, they were being projected to finish 3rd in the NL East; so what does that tell you about the rest of the team. Santana SHOULD be good for 16 - 20 wins, but the key word there is should. We don't know how he'll adjust. Will he dominate like Randy Johnson did or will he be like Barry Zito?

This entire TD is a guess and my guess is the Padres will win, your guess is the Mets will win.

THE PIRATES

February 1, 2008  04:04 PM ET

Well.. I see no way how you can argue it on this website, since people here think Johan Santana is the bee's knees...

February 1, 2008  04:05 PM ET

If I had to, I would say the Diamondbacks.

February 1, 2008  04:17 PM ET

Still the way things are going they may not even get Santana..

February 1, 2008  09:22 PM ET

nvm, i just checked ESPN and they reached a deal...

February 2, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Good luck Masta.

February 2, 2008  12:40 PM ET

right back at ya.

February 2, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Padres. Hmm. Maybe if Trevor stops blowing saves in crunch time. And Christ Young stays healthy. And they get a catcher who can actually throw out more than 2 runners a year. Ok, i've said enough.

February 2, 2008  01:10 PM ET

lol

February 2, 2008  02:11 PM ET

But you have to factor in probable injuries right?

Didn't the Mets get Livan Hernandez?

February 2, 2008  02:14 PM ET

The Padres have a good 1-2 punch, but the Mets seem deeper 1-5. Both teams play a different style of baseball.

February 2, 2008  02:22 PM ET

I voted. <----

I would agree the Mets are the FAVORITES. That doesn't mean they will actually perform. But i have to think that they are, on paper, the best team in the NL.

February 3, 2008  07:53 AM ET

Great TD Masta. Hopefully it gets a lot of votes. I've done several TDs in the last couple of days that have gotten only 10 votes TOTAL (one was for another Tourney Final). Hopefully that doesn't happen here.

February 3, 2008  08:37 AM ET

Both have good arguments, but stowe's last argument is persuasive. Prediction or projection TD's are always tough because you have to present rock solid evidence for your case. Vote to the right ------>

February 3, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Rstowe, how do you go the whole TD and NOT mention the greatest baseball player of all time besides Clemente, Jim Edmonds? Vote to you anyway. Jim Edmonds is so damn good he will lead them to 162-0.

February 3, 2008  08:54 AM ET

I thought he retired to the Gold Glove old timers home?

Wow, I can't believe I left off Edmonds. Someone else needs to run NMI from now on I guess.

February 3, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Nah, you are still on the ball with NMI.

I admit baseball is EXTREMELY hard to keep up with over the off season. I really hate free agency.

Baseball has turned into a business.

Dont believe me? Check the names of the stadiums. AT&T? Come on. Jacobs Field changed to a business name too.

February 3, 2008  09:03 AM ET

I didn't even know (or didn't remember) that Edmonds left.

I also hate that all stadiums are named after businesses and that the names change every 2 years. What is 3-Com called now?

February 3, 2008  09:06 AM ET

was this a rotation only TD or all around. Their was no mention of any other aspect of the game. Good rotation discussion but it takes more than that to win. Stowe, he was disagreeing with you and saying the west was tougher and record wise they were and the dbacks added dan haren, which is a big boost to their rotation.

February 3, 2008  09:07 AM ET

If it was all around, good job avoiding the obvious fact that the mets have a better lineup than the padres, stowe.
