The Lakers are now OBVIOUS title contenders

They have just acquired Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies. Here are the trade details:

Lakers get:

Pau Gasol
2010 2nd Rd. Pick

Grizzlies get:

Kwame Brown
Javaris Crittenton
Aaron McKie
Marc Gasol ( Pau's brother; kinda weird)
2008,2010 1st Rd. Pick

The Lakers get the frontcourt help they need by adding Gasol. He also fits their offense as he can shoot and pass. Argue more in depth next, as I see yours.

Okay, the Lakers obviously well be improving by adding Gasol. Kwame Brown might hurt a bit, but Pau will make up for it. I'm not saying LA won't benefit from this. But seriously, before this trade, some people didn't even have them labeled as contenders, and this trade is making them obvious contenders. Don't get me wrong, they will improve, but they still have the Suns, Spurs, Hornets, Mavericks, and maybe even Jazz and Rockets in their way in the West. Those guys don't make them look like obvious contenders to me. And if the make it to the Finals somehow, the East has either the Magic, Pistons, Celtics, or Cavs that can give them a hard time. This will benefit the team but doesn't make them obvious title contenders.

I dont think Kwame will hurt a bit. I live in Los Angeles and people are literally throwing parties around here because he left. From the Lakers actual squad, they gave up Kwame and Javaris for Pau. That is pretty good. They signed Mckie as a free agent to make the money work and gave away the draft rights to marc Gasol, which was playing in Spain.

Lakers looked like a team that could get a top seed in the Western Conference. Then they got the injury bug (Bynum, Mihm, Ariza, Walton). When their team gets healthy look at how good their lineup will be:

C: Bynum- 13pts, 10 rebs, 2 blks
PF: Gasol- 19pts, 9 rebs, 1.5blks
SF: Odom- 13pts, 9 rebs,
SG: Bryant- 28pts, 6rebs, 5ast
PG: Fisher- 12pts, 2reb, 3ast
Maybe Kobe's number will go down, but we saw that when the Lakers were playing phenomenal basketball, he was more than willing to give up the rock.
Now the Lakers will have two seven footers in the frontcourt, Odom will will go back to his original position at SF, and their backcourt will remain. Nobody in the west will be able to matchup with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom on the court. Im telling you the Lakers are obvious contenders.

this isn't necessarily going to be the dream lineup that everyone is talking about. It will be very good don't get me wrong but...

Ric Bucher reported that Andrew Bynum may be out for the rest of the season and not for 2 months.

But in the end I guees I would say the lakers are stills erious tiutle contenders w/o bynum and with Gasol

Memphis also benefits from this trade they gain a ton of cap room and get Javaris Crittenton to back up Conley

Though they got nothing else because you can't imagine those 1st round picks willl be good unless they are lottery protected and Kwame starts playiong good which may be impossible

I'd say that anointing them as OBVIOUS contenders is a bit premature, especially since it's been mentioned that Bynum might miss the remainder of the season.

Report Offensive Comment

Bynum MIGHT!

Gasol only gives the Lakers hope. Not OBVIOUS contenders. There are a few teams that might have a little something to say about it. But hey, rather than argue for Cheesehead, I'll wait for his argument, which should be pwning in nature.

Sorry for the holdup...

i think they will, i mean with KOBE, BYNUM, and GASOL, im not sure how you couldnt be a threat

This isn't NBA Live. You can't just plug in 18 pts & 8 rebs because that's what he did in Mem. They still aren't title contenders.

Lakers vs. Celtics in the Finals, with Celtics winning in 6.

im a diehard lakers fan, and still although i was thrilled by this trade, the lakers need to get past the suns, spurs, and/or the mavs in the playoffs

Lakers will win the Pacfic.......Their starting lineup is as good as any in the League and they gave up nothing in a salary dump by the Grizz......
