HOF TOURNEY FINALS: Is It harder for a Punter, Or A Kicker to get into the Hall Of Fame?

No question in my mind it's tougher for a punter to make it. Just look at Ray Guy, the best punter in NFL history bar none. He's still not in and may never get in. If the best punter in NFL history isn't in and no other punters are then what does that tell you ?

Granted, only one kicker is in right now, but guys like Stover, Vinatieri, etc. are locks and no other punters are entering the conversation until Guy finally gets in...

The most under-appreciated position in the game gets even more underappreciated by you.

For those who don't know about Ray Guy, here are the facts:

Ray Guy played 14 years
he won 3 rings and made 7 pro-bowls
he averaged 42.4 yards per punt and even more amazingly, not 1 of his 1,049 punts were ever returtned for a touchdown.
he was one of the last to place his kicks unlike the punters of today who simply "blast away"
he was named the punter on the NFL's 75th anniversary team
he is already enshrined in the College Football HOF and the National HS football HOF
They named the "nation's best collegiate punter" award after Guy

Now why all the Ray Guy stats?

Because he will be in the Hall of Fame soon. While he didn't make it on this ballot, he still was a finalist. Look for Guy to make it into the hall in the next couple years.

There is only one pure kicker in the Hall - Jan Stenerud.

Stover is not a lock for the hall, and in recent years Vinatieri has not been as clutch so his status isn't as "lock" anymore.

Either way...Ray Guy will get in before another kicker

Ray Guy may end up the only punter in the hall of fame, ever.

So, there are no punters there as of yet but there's one kicker and more to follow.

Basically, if Guy doesn't get in, then no other punters will, but the fact that Stenerud is in there opens the door for more guys like him.

Stenerud shouldn't be in there first of all, and Guy deserves to be there.

Since you didn't make much of an argument for why kickers deserve it more, I'd also like to point out other punters who might make it into the hall...

What about Jeff Feagles? He's played 19 years, finally got his Super Bowl ring this year (same amount as Stover who you like to call a "lock"), he's played in a league-record 320 consecutive games, is the alltime leader in punts, punting yards, and punts inside the 20.

Punters are crucial to the game of football, and having a great punter could change the field position battle around for you team which could mean wonders when the game is on the line.

Yes, Punting isn't sexy and is rather boring, but they have a huge role in the game and have a huge impact on the game whether you like it or not.

Your Hall of Fame "locks" were 20th (stover-84%) and 28th (Viniatieri-79%) in Percentage made and 10th (stover 27) and 21st (Vinatieri-23) in field goals made...don't seem like Hall of Fame worthy numbers to me

The best kickers vary so much year to year so it's hard to establish yourself as one of the leagues best ever...so its harder to make Hall

I understand what you mean but Ray Guy's been retired forever and is far and away the best punter ever and is NOT in the HOF. so, how will anyone else make it until he does ?

why do you say that stenerud shouldn't be in ?

kickers are far more respected than punters, hence, kickers get into the hall easier than punters do and there will be more in the HOF, easily, than punters.

Guy has had 17 years of eligibility and he was a finalist this year. Stenerud shouldn't be in there if Guy isn't was all I was saying. Stenerud is 8th all time in Field Goals made and 9th all time in points scored.

Do you know why I say kickers aren't as important as punters? Mike Vanderjagt is currently second all time in FG% at 86.466%. Who did he play for this year? That's right, not one team wanted the services of the second most accurate kicker EVER. Kickers come and go, and they can be gotten for cheap. Is that really the respect you are talking about?

"kickers are far more respected than punters, hence, kickers get into the hall easier than punters do and there will be more in the HOF,easily, than punters."
-well i disagree-and so does Peyton Manning (Vanderjagt-"idiot kicker")
-How can you say its easier for kickers to get into the hall than it is for punters? ONE, yes ONE true kicker has made it into the HOF while Guy was just a finalist this year, so it won't be long before that number is matched. The only reason you think kickers are "more respected" is because you can measure their success by points score. While punters do not score they contribute more

You're such a homer. Stover is not a lock Hall of Famer. Stover's a very good kicker but he has limited range and is a liability on kickoffs. Vinatieri is the only kicker with a shot at the Hall of Fame and I don't even think he's a lock.

February 7, 2008  03:46 PM ET

yea, this is tough...i fear a defeat coming on

February 7, 2008  03:56 PM ET

Hey, EFF YOU tradeangelos. just because i said stover is a lock doesn't mean i'm a "homer" you idiot. I'm one of the least homer-istic ravens fans you'll ever meet.

what's wrong w/ stover varmint ? he's been one of the best for a long time now...

February 7, 2008  03:59 PM ET

anybody forget about the Ancient Anderson? who is like 88 years old entering his 26 season if somebody signs him? the all time point leader? Nobody cares about special teams players, its the truth and its hard to get into the HOF look at Art Monk

February 7, 2008  04:03 PM ET

Listen, I like Stover a lot and he played a big part in the Ravens winning the Super Bowl in 2000 but he isn't a Hall of Famer. He never was one of the dominant kickers of this era and his leg strength has always been subpar. The Ravens had to carry kickers forever because Stover's kickoffs are so poor. That isn't a Hall of Famer to me.

February 7, 2008  04:09 PM ET

The Unsung hero TD--love it.

February 7, 2008  04:15 PM ET

Anderson (both of them) have a much better shot than Stover

February 7, 2008  04:32 PM ET

hahah true that Duquesne

February 7, 2008  04:34 PM ET

Good argument Duquesne, I felt like punter would be my inclination also but you may sway my feeling on the matter.

February 7, 2008  04:42 PM ET

This is tough. Duquense makes a wonderful argument, but it's possible that another kicker can get in. However, after Ray Guy is there a punter out there capable of making the Hall? I don't think so. So, if Guy can't get in then Punters aren't Hall worthy.

Vote to Ed Reed.

"Good argument Duquesne, I felt like punter would be my inclination also but you may sway my feeling on the matter."
--thanks...i will have to try my best - cuz on the face i'd probably say punter too...but that wouldnt make for a fun td, would it?

February 8, 2008  01:06 AM ET

Too bad Wersching embezzled. Otherwise he'd be in the conversation. Ray Guy better make it eventually or the HOF is bogus IMO. No vote till complete.

February 8, 2008  01:10 AM ET

those stover and vinatieri numbers were for the 07 season btw, sorry if that was confusing

February 8, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Seems like Duquesne put more effort into his arguments. Vote to the right, despite starting at a disadvantage.

February 8, 2008  01:29 PM ET

Ray was amazing... the kickers have chances to be clutch and win big games. The punters are overlooked and at times forgotten. Ray was an exception and probally the best ever.

February 8, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Just because an argument is longer doesn't make it more correct. Vote to Ed

February 8, 2008  03:05 PM ET

So there is a kicker, and there isn't a punter....and I'm supposed to vote for kicker?

February 8, 2008  06:30 PM ET

George Blanda is already in right? Or is he in as a QB? I think Ray Guy defined the punter position. How do you vote here? Who's for whom here? Hard to tell. I'm thinking Duquesne is backing the punter so'll vote for him.

February 9, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Vote to the Left
