My pick is Barry Sanders. First of all he played only 10 years in the NFL and is 3rd all-time on the yards rushing list. Here is some of his stats.
Carries:3,062
Yards:15,269
Rushing touchdowns:99
Pro bowls:10
Yards per carry:5.0
1997 NFL MVP
2-time Offensive Player of the Year
Holds 10 Detriot Lion records

Its Walter Payton.

We know the stats but that doesn't tell the whole story about a player, especially in this sport. Put yourself in this situation. Its 4th and 1 and if you give up the ball the game is over. Who do you want to run the ball, Sanders or Payton? Sanders might get you 60yds but he also might lose 3. That was the problem with Sanders' style. Very exciting but not always getting the results you want. Payton you know would get that one yard and get you the first down. Short yardage wasn't Sanders strength. Sanders style also made it very hard to game plan around. You don't know when he will break one off. The running back position is more valuable when the athlete is a consistent runner rather than the big play maker. Sure the big play is great but with that you will get a lot of 2nd and long or 3rd and long. If your running back just danced in the whole instead of driving forward for the 5 yards your next play just became much more difficult to call. The Lions faced a lot of 2nd and longs in those years. Of course I would take either on my team but if I had a choice I take Sweetness.

Teams did stop Barry otherwise they would have had a better playoff recored than they did. Walter Payton also spent most of his career on bad teams. They were able to build around him, its easier with that style of running. He didn't spend his whole career with teams like the '85 Bears. If you don't remember Sweetness running, Adrian Peterson is close except Payton never got hurt and was still more consistent. I can't stress how important that is to a team. To know your running back is going to get through that hole. Barry danced to much. His line was underrated and they had a couple of years with the run and gun offense with Herman Moore. Barry was far more exciting but the run game isn't suppose to be flashy. Its suppose to hard nosed, punch you in the mouth and run you over.

If Barry was so inconsisent than why did he run 5.0 yards per carry. Meanwhile Payton only ran 4.4 yards per carry. So I'd say that Sanders was more consisent than Payton. If a play broke down Barry would still make something happen. I can't say the same about Payton. Sanders was truely something speical. Plus if Payton was so consisent than why did he reach a 1,000 yards in only 10 of his 13 years of his career. While Sanders reached 1,000 yards in every single season of his career including his 2,053 yard season.

-2, -1, 15, -2, -2, 2, -3, 3, 60, -1, -3, 20, -2, -1, 14, -1, -2, 2, 30. 126yds, on 19 caries. This is over 5yds a carry.

Not consistent and this was how Barry ran. A stats101 class will teach you that average tells you nothing of consistency. You can't game plan around that and you also don't give your defense much of a rest. For me I would much rather get rid of those (-) signs and see a lot more of 4s, 5s, 6s, and 7s. Its the difference between 2nd with 4 to go and 3rd and long. Barry's teams had a lot of 3 and outs and it wasn't just because the passing game was horrible. It was cause the faced a lot of 3rd and longs as well.

Both players put up great stats. Payton played longer which is also in my opinion a plus. Barry was the better play maker, more elusive and electrifying player but that doesn't make you the better football player. My dream backfield would to have Payton as my possession back and Barry my situation back but that suggest right there that Payton was the work horse. Not that Barry wasn't capable of totting the rock 30 times you just were going to get just as many negative runs as positive ones.

Why?

Barry.......... or Jim Brown

February 7, 2008  08:08 PM ET

Emmit smith was really good but Barry sanders is better than him. So I say bary sanders the best RB ever

February 7, 2008  08:09 PM ET

ah yes of course Jim Brown is the second best of all time

February 7, 2008  08:10 PM ET

Jim Brown is the popular pick for the 'old' school. I kind of like Payton myself, but Barry was amazing to watch run.

February 7, 2008  08:11 PM ET

Emmitt Smith...hands down

February 7, 2008  08:13 PM ET

Emmit ran behind what might have been the offensive line ever. Many could have been that good behind that line. Walter spent many years on bad teams as did Barry but I take Walter over anyone.

WOW! That second argument really convinced me! WOW!

February 7, 2008  08:15 PM ET

If you made a mistake I will give you a little time to post your argument down here.

February 7, 2008  08:16 PM ET

But Barry was on a bad team his whole carrer. If he would have had a decent passing game on his team then he would have been even better. But teams knew the Lions were going to run and still couldn't stop Barry!

February 7, 2008  08:18 PM ET

Why? I would be glad to tell you!

Jim is the ORIGINAL power back. He revolutionized the way RBs run.

Jim had 106 touchdowns, 12,312 rushing yards and 5.2 yards a carry. He only played a total of 118 games and had 126 total touchdowns and 104 rushing yards a game and over 125 total yards a game.

He played 9 seasons. MVP three times, 9 time pro bowler (MVP of 3 pro bowls)

He was almost always in the Championship game.

He led the league in rushing yards 8 out of his 9 years. Was NEVER injured.

February 7, 2008  08:19 PM ET

The answer is Jim Brown. It's really not that difficult. Sanders and Payton are #2 and #3 in either order.

February 7, 2008  08:27 PM ET

Jim Brown was great but so where those teams. Like I just said Payton played on a lot of bad teams as well. Between '84 and '88 they were good but other than that they were below average football teams. Almost Everyone of Jim Brown's teams were great teams.

February 7, 2008  08:30 PM ET

Sorry, but the "better team" argument is too easy. Brown was just better. I'm not going to go into it again, I've argued this more than once.

February 7, 2008  08:31 PM ET

Thanks man! Okay here's my argument.
If Barry was so inconsistent then why did he run 5.0 yards per carry compared to Payton's 4.4 yards per carry! Infact, that might prove that he was more consisent than Payton! If a play broke down Barry could still make something happen. That is truely special. I can't say the same about Payton. Sanders was truely something special to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

February 7, 2008  08:32 PM ET

Lifer, get into it again. We can gang up on them all!

Ps- Barry ran backwards 1,000 yards on his career. One of the most amazing things Ive ever heard.

I didn't know the Jim Brown fans were snobs.
