Sorry this took so long, I've been really bust lately. I would have probably chosen Namath if I were aloud to, but oh well. For me, it came down to a receiver and a quarterback, but I just couldn't bring myself to pick the receiver, so I will go with Warren Moon.
There is no doubt that he was very talented, but was there anything great that he ever did. In fact, the thing that people most remember about him is when he and the Oilers blew a thirty-two point lead in the playoffs to lose to the Bills. He never won a Super Bowl, or even made it for that matter. While I am not one to think that not having a ring should keep you out, it can definately hurt you.
Lets take a look at his stats. He is ranked very high on some lists, including passing yards and touchdowns. The main reason for those high numbers are that the Oilers passed all the time. They were a pass first team, unlike many other Hall of Fame quarterbacks.
He has fumbled the ball more times than any player in NFL history. His record stands at 161. 161 FUMBLES. He never had a great completion percentage, and he threw a lot of interceptions in his career as well.
Good luck.

I gotta go old-school on this one. Another QB, Bob Waterfield, is much less hall-worthy than Moon is. Read down the HOF list of QB's. It's a whos-who of QB's until you reach this head scratcher:
He played only 8 full seasons, from 1945-1952.
His career totals for tds: 97, now, his int total: 128
Lifetime passer rating: 61.6
21 career rushing yards
career completion %: 50.3%
he did win the mvp as a rookie, in 1945 and was all nfl for 3 years and passing champ twice and one sb title.
this is good, of course, but less hall worthy than moon by far. this guy even split time later in his career w/ norm van brocklin.
Bigdleech said 02/08, 11:15 PM
Wow. To be honest, I haven't even heard of the guy. I've heard of other quarterbacks from his time, even norm van brocklin, but never waterfield.
97 touchdowns is damn good for someone back then, especially spending some time in a two quarterback system. Teams threw the ball a lot less back then. But anyway, the further back you go in time, the worse the quarterbacks statistics are. People like Bradshaw and Namath had very similar stats, although there passing totals were much bigger because of when they played and how long they played.
While Waterfield's interception totals are bad, they are not as bad as the amount of times that Moon has given the ball up. I could not find how many of his fumbles were lost, but I would imagine at least one hundred of the one hundred and sixty-one were lost.
Moon's completion percentage was about 54 percent, which is not very good for the times that he played. Another quarterback who played in the same era and is considered one of the best ever, Montana has over a 63 percent completion percentage. These numbers show that, while he was a good quarterback, he is not Hall of Fame worthy.
Plus, Moon was only all-pro three times as well.

Moon accomplished alot in the CFL though prior to the NFL. He's def. more hall-worthy than my guy. Waterfield threw 31 more int's than td's. That's def. not hall-worthy in my eyes.
Bigdleech said 02/10, 05:26 PM
Don't have much time left, and you are killing me anyway, so I will make this short.
He was very good in the CFL, but that doesn't really mean anything. Sure, it is called the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but CFL participation is never really taken into account by the voters. I mean, Doug Flutie was a great player in the CFL. If they had a CFL Hall of Fame, he would be in it, but the fact that he was a very accomplished player in the CFL doesn't mean anything.

Gotta be honest, I feel like I am bringing a pretty weak argument here.

Going off of your comment, Marino and his numbers should be discounted also? Lets also not forget Moons 6 years in the CFL. Add both leagues numbers together and NO ONE can touch Moon.

At least you're honest lol. I dont know if the argument was weak, I think the player chosen was the weak part.

Report Offensive CommentI wanted to say Lynn Swann, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm sure he will tear me apart. I would start this over, but I really couldn't think of anyone good to begin with. I almost chose Doak Walker.

Report Offensive CommentNamath made 5 Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams. That's more PBs and All-Pro teams then Hall of Fame players such as Paul Hornung, John Riggins, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Art Monk, Charlie Joiner and John Stallworth. Why are those players considered better then Joe Willie?

Report Offensive CommentBlanda also had only a 60.6% QB rating and when he made Halas' team, he was paid $600 and was forced to give it back when he did make the team.
But really, this guy just barely had over 1k yards per season, based on the average.
