Where will Asante Samuel End Up In Free Agency?

Assuming the Patriots do not re-sign him and he tests the market, I think he will land in Green Bay.

I expect people to say I have bias towards the Packers, and I do, but I legitemely think that the Packers will go after him.

The Packers defense is held up by two ageing cornerbacks, 35, and 31, both still good but are one the down side of their careers. As we saw in the NFC Championship, and against Dallas, it takes only a little height and speed to beat the Packers cronerbacks. And I think Thompson see's the weakness in the D and will look to the best option in Free Agency to plug the hole.

I also think the Packers will make an effort at Samuel because that would give them the ability to move Woodson to Safety, where the Packers have not had a competant player since Darren Sharper.

The Packers want to be more than contenders, they want to be winners and I think the organization will see Samuel will be able to lift the play of the Packers enough to get them to the Superbowl (plus we have 18 million in cap room.)

And Samuel see's a great team, and great defense that he can fit right into as well as get some mentoring from two of the best corners in the game.

I doubt the Patriots re-sign Samuel too. They've let Ty Law and Milloy go free in the past. Chances are Samuel leaves as well.

But, I don't think he's going to go to Green Bay. In terms of cap space left for next year, the Packers are 21st. That's not terrible, but it doesn't really put them in the greatest position to go out and get the jewel of this year's free agent class.

What's more important though, is the fact that the Packers' CBs almost exclusively use press coverages. Asante Samuel, at 5'10" and 185 lbs, is definitely not the best man for that kind of defense. What he is good at, though, is playing in the Cover 2. In any case, in order to sign Samuel, and use him most effectively, the Packers would have to change their entire defensive scheme. Seeing as to how they were one of the better defenses in the NFC, I don't see why they'd do that.

I think Samuel is going to the Jets. They were willing to make a serious run at him last year before the Pats tagged him, and it looks like they're going to go after it again.

Mangini would LOVE to take away the Pats' best defensive player, and a combination of Revis and Samuel would be formidable.

I agree the Jets will be one of the contenders fighting for Samuel, but what I think it will come down to is where Samuel wants to go.

I have a feeling he doesnt want to go to a NY Jets team that was ranked 19th in total defense, where as he could go to a top flight young defense in Green Bay that was ranked 11th.

I also feel he will want another shot at a Title and he certainly wont get that with the NY Jets, that went 4-12 last year, and plays in the division with the NE Pats who are certainly going to have another division title. Where as he sees the NFC North as a weak division that the Packers can easily take, giving him the best shot at a title.

I also think the Packers are going to change their whole defensive scheme in the off-season because the NFC Championship showed how vulnerable the Pakcers defense is, and how a good receiver can easily find holes in it. I have heard lots of talk about them going into a Standard Nickel formation and playing out of that, because Brady Poppinga is awful at pass defense. And that system would easily fit Samuel because they would have to have 3 cornerbacks on the field, making the Packers CB core the most feared in the league.

C'mon...no coach in their right mind would choose to make the nickel defense their base defense. Playing that way would allow teams to run all over the Packers. No WAY they convert to the nickel.

Now that we've established that the Green Bay defense is likely going to stay 4-3, adding Asante Samuel means that either Charles Woodson or Al Harris is going to be demoted to nickel back. I imagine neither would be very happy with that. Tramon Williams, a young kid with some great potential, would then be demoted to dime, setting back his progress. Adding Asante Samuel would really disrupt the balance Green Bay has in their secondary right now.

It might make sense to add Samuel if the Packers' CBs were bad, but the Pack actually has one of the better CB tandems in the league. Yes, Al Harris was virtually molested by Plaxico Burress in the NFC Championship game (one of the many reasons GB lost that game), but that doesn't take away from the fact that he had a fantastic season. Adding Samuel would in short be a hasty overreaction to just one bad game.

No, it wouldnt make Woodson the number three CB, he would move to safety, which could work very well, while Samuel becomes the #1 or #2 CB.

And I think you are very much overrating Tramon Williams, he was decent and a good returner, but in no way is he going to come close to a good nickel back or even a starter someday. He will be a solid #4 CB and returner but nothing more.

You really didnt back up your NY Jets statement and since this throwdown is done...congrats

He wants money, and a team is willing to give it to him.

He will DESTROY Clements' deal and become the highest paid defensive player of all time.

February 9, 2008  12:55 PM ET

no, lance briggs or hayensworth will be paid higher.

February 9, 2008  12:58 PM ET

No way.

Clements got 80 million over 8 years, with what, 22.5 million guaranteed?

Samuel>>>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>Clements.

Haynesworth isn't leaving Tennessee, and there's no way Briggs breaks 80 million.

February 9, 2008  02:01 PM ET

February 9, 2008  02:20 PM ET

wow controversy....thats right.
a team with not a whole lot of cap room and one of the better corner tandems in the conference is going to go after a guy thats going to command a massive contract. they wont try to fill the legitimate holes on their team, theyll just go after a corner because theirs are "aging".

He is going to play for the Browns, his old coach is there, they have cap room, and a defense that could use some help. TOO EASY
