Rules: Best player/driver that has wore/drove the # 26, and has to be retired.

My pick:

Wade Boggs

My Pick:

Billy Williams, Chicago Cubs.

Boggs:

12x All Star selection

2x Gold Glove winner

8x Silver Slugger

1x World Series champion

AL leader in batting average (1983, 1985-1988)

AL leader in hits (1985)

AL leader in doubles and runs (1988, 1989)

Williams:

6 Time All-Star Selection

1972 BA Title

1972 Slugging Percentage Leader

1970 Leader in Runs and Hits

'68, '70, '72 Total Bases Leader

5 Time Leader in Games Played

1117 Consecutive Games Played ('62-'71)

.290 Career BA, 2771 Hits, 1475 RBIs, 426 HRs, 434 Doubles

1972 Season: .333 BA, .606 Slugging %, 37 HRs, 122 RBI, MVP

1961 Rookie of the Year

Number Retired By Chicago Cubs

Plus, Boggs only retired number isn't 26, its 12 for the Devil Rays, and he wore the number 12 for 7 seasons with the Rays and Yankees. Williams wore 12 for his entire career.

Boggs finished his career with 3010 hits, 137 homeruns, and a batting average of .328.

In 1996, Boggs helped the Yankees win their first World Series title in 18 years. Boggs is also credited for teaching the Yankees their current pitch selection technique. Before Boggs joined up with the Yankees, their pitches per plate appearance was 14th in the league, but soon after Boggs joined the team they were 4th and then 1st.

So as you can see, Boggs not only one of the greatest third baseman, but he could help a teams pitching staff by swinging only at perfect pitches, and fouling off pitches that were tough to hit.

"I used to tell my pitchers I could get them two strikes on Boggs easy, but from then on they were on their own. There's no doubt in my mind that he is the best two-strike hitter in history"

---- Rene Lachemann

Williams had a .290 career BA, 426 HRs, and 2711 hits. He is a hall-of-famer and one of the greatest Cubs ever.

Also, he is definitely the best #26 in sports. The number 26 is only retired by one major sports team, and its by the Cubs for Billy Williams. Plus, Boggs only wore the number for about half of his career.

In conclusion, Billy Williams was one of the greatest all-around hitters in baseball history. Few players have ever been that good of a combination of power and contact hitting. He is a legend and the best #26 ever.

I never saw Williams play but you would have been better served picking Rod Woodson who at least the members of FN have seen play.

I thought the SAME thing !

Never saw Williams play but I did see Boggs play.
At first when I saw the title I was going with Boggs
but the argument sure makes it for Williams
