NFL Overtime is unfair and needs to be changed!!

Talk about unfair?!?! I think that it sucks that in overtime the first (and possibly only) possession is choosen by a coin flip. Look at all other levels of football and none of them do it like the NFL. Why not?? Because it's not fair.

I wonder how many teams have won a toss in OT and elected to play Defense first. I can't think of any, if you know of one, let me know.

If you think that the current NFL OT is fair..............................

Let's TD.

This is such a played out topic, but let's give it a shot.

The truth is that historically about 40% of teams that win the toss actually win the game. And an even smaller percentage win on the first possession.

It is a HUGE misconception that this is not a fair system. Believe it of not there is more to football than just the offense. In a game you have 60 Minutes to outplay the other team. By the time it goes to OT, if your Defense just allows the other team to march up the field guess what? YOU DESERVE A LOSS!

So what is your answer? A playoff system like the NCAA? Yeah that's what we need 7 OT's with 14 TD's. Players playing the equivalent to 2 full games, dropping like flies.

The way I see it the system in place now may not be perfect, but it is better than many give it credit. Not to mention that just the idea of sudden death has to get you on the edge of your seat.

If something is soooooo played out, don't waste your time on it and someone who wants to really argue it will select it. Or where you forced to take this TD right now?

Why does the other team get the football in the second half when they receive the kickoff to open the game? Why in college basketball, the other team is awarded the ball when they didn't win the jump ball?

I can really care less what the winning percentage is and I would like to know where you got that random number from (40%). The only thing that I care about is the fairness of the game and if it takes 7OT's to finish a game in college then it's fine. I personally say no more than 3 OT and a Tie if it is still tied at the conclusion of the 3rd.

Defense could have nothing to do with "Marching up the Field" A team could have a big Kick return, 1 10yd pass and a field goal and that end's the game when your offense could be your strong suit.

The NFL will not admit that their system is flawed and are unwilling to change it.

More to come........................

Easy killer, I just said it was a little played out b/c I have seen it here about a million times. Doesn't mean I don't want to argue. Save that for when you get some tool on here talking about Pizza over your argument.

Now on to your argument.

-Why does the team that kicked in the first half get the ball in the second? To be fair, but when you have a 3rd half you flip again, seems fair to me.

-Where did I get the 40%? USA Today, and an ESPN report you know how to use the internet so go find the links on your own. (no room here). Also in that ESPN report, experts say that around 30% of games are actually decided on that first possession.

-Then you say that you could win on a big kick return, and? What if a team returns a kick to win a game with less than a minute left in the game? Is that not fair? Or you win a game 7-0 with the only score coming from a kick return, also not fair?

-The NFL won't admit that the system is flawed? Well they also won't admit that the Super Bowl was fixed, maybe because IT WASN'T!!!! Why admit something that isn't true?

Stop watching so much Sports Center and realize that there is more to the game than TD passes and Huge runs.

I understand where you are coming from and I understand that the game isn't just about the big plays. If someone runs a kick return back in the final min of a game, then that's cool and totally fair.

The reason that it would be fair is because one team got the ball to start the first half and the OTHER team got it to start the second half.

Look man, most team sports consist of 3 simple concepts:

1. We need the Ball (If you don't have possession of the ball, it's tougher to score)

2. We need to stop the other team from scoring (Defense wins championships)

3. We need to score WITH the ball (gotta put up points to win games)

I listed these in the order that I agree with and having the ball in your possession is top priority. The current NFL overtime doen't allow one team that oppurtunity. To me that's not fair.

MJ, nice to see you have calmed down. That said I really want you to read this.

In the 2007 season (regular season and playoffs) the NFL had a total of 15 games go to overtime.

Teams that won the toss won 8 of the games, teams that lost the toss won 7 of the games.

I have to say that that is as fair as you can get, to add to that the biggest game to go to overtime (NYG vs GB in the playoffs) was won by the team that lost the toss.

The Truth is that the NCAA's system (while much more fun to watch) is actually the flawed system. By making an overtime system that only focuses on 1 aspect of the game you can really cripple some teams. A team that has a great D but not much of an O would not stand a chance in that overtime format.

This system may not be the most loved system ever, but is it fair? Yeah it actually is. The numbers don't lie.

I say they should just have a two-minute drill in OT...with a few rule changes, obviously.

The Rules do need to be changed, but great argument by BS

Whatever happens, don't change it to match the NCAA.

A couple of years ago the Lions elected to play with the wind after they won the toss (they were playing against the Bears in Champaign). The Bears prceeded to march down field and kick a field goal to win.

Report Offensive Comment

There were ten instances in the history of the NFL where the winner of the coin toss in OT chose to go out on defense first. Most recently by Marty Mornhinweg of the Detroit Lions in 2002. Coahes such as Tom Landry and Mike Ditka have also chosen this tactic and it is usually due to the wind. BTW, the overall record of the 10 teams that made this choice is 5-5.

I've always wondered what's wrong with a tie? I think OT should be reserved for playoff games. Let them tie if the score is even after 60 minutes.

Yes, I understand, but I don't know when you will get back either, so I could have something come up as well...
