Jim Zorn as head coach? What is happening in D.C.?
With a strong fan base and a new stadium you would think the Redskins would be a top 5 coaching in the NFL. But the choice of Zorn, who will be the 6th different head coach since 1999, WAS WRONG
How do you award Zorn, hired just 3 weeks ago as the offensive coordinator, the head coaching job with such candidates as Fassel, Mariucci, Pete Carroll, etc.? Sure, some of them removed their name, still anyone of those candidates have to be a better choice than someone who has never even been a coordinator in the league. I don???t endorse anyone in particular, I just say this hire was a mistake.
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/11, 02:42 PM
Hiring Zorn is not a mistake at this point.
1) Andy Reid was a QB coach for the Packers when he was hired by the Eagles. He has won 5 division titles and took the team to the SB. So we see that a person doesn't ALWAYS have to be a coordinator before he becomes a HC.
2) Hiring a re-tread coach is not always the answer, sometimes you have to go fresh. Look at the Packers when they got Mike McCarthy from the 49ers after the 49ers had nearly the suckiest offensive year ever. There was no physical evidence to show that McCarthy was a good OC, and would be a good HC. Sometimes it's all about the interview. How does he present himself? His values? Strategy? Ideas for the franchise. Goals. Leadership. Ability to command respect.
3) The only reason you think this is a mistake is because Zorn has never been a coordinator? That logic is full of holes. A lot of coaches didn't want the Redskins job, no matter what the money. Bill Cowher wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. And yet you say the team should have one of the best coaching staffs in the league because they are rich?
We will have to wait and watch the games before we can fairly say Zorn is a mistake. If you judge
662 said 02/11, 02:53 PM
Just because he was never a coordinator IS NOT the only reason, just one of a few. There were far more qualified candidates for the position.
If they wanted him for head coach all along, why did they hire him 3 weeks ago as offensive coordinator?
And on top of that, 5 million a year? What sense does that make. It isn't like this guy was a wanted commodity around the league.
According to the Washington Post, Fassel was the leading candidate until Daniel Snyder found out, on message boards, that hire was unpopular with fans!
This guy comes in the press conference claiming the Redskin colors as red and black?? It???s only common sense we have to wait to see if he really is a good coach, but as of right now, bad decision
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/11, 03:46 PM
Zorn was hired because the owner realized this guy was talented, and he wanted him on the staff. Then, when no other real canidate stepped up, Zorn was promoted.
So do you think that every time a guy gets his first head-coaching job it is a bad hire?
Snyder gave him the $$ because he can. And to make a statement to the fans, press, and players that this isn't some money-saving hire designed to keep the dough in Snyders pockets, this is a real coach who commands respect.
Fassel is not a great coach. Carroll is NOT leaving USC. And the other guy sucked with the Lions.(15-28 record) Is that what you want to tell your fans, "we are going to be a great team, we just got a guy who was fired from the detroit lions." ?? Bill Cowher was not even interested.(what does that say?)
Bottom line, they need a coach. Guys with perfect credentials were not available. So, the Redskins hired a guy who is shown that he is ready for a head coaching job. "Zorn, 54, leaves after seven seasons as Seattle's quarterbacks coach. He was key to the development of Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, with whom Zorn has worked since the two arrived in Seattle in 2001."...
662 said 02/11, 04:06 PM
Just because Snyder CAN give him money, doesn't make it RIGHT. Look at Dieon, Bruce Smith, Mark Brunell, Adam Archuleta (ouch). Yea, paying out has really worked in their favor.
Fresh approach vs. retread is a circular argument that see-saws back and forth. What is real is that the Redskins are a veteran squad that could easily run over Zorn at te pressence of hard times. What respect will they have for this QB coach?
You bring up the success he had with Hasselbeck in Seattle being a sign on why he hill be great....How did Mike Martz work out as a head coach after being a successful QB coach in Washington (T. Green)???
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/11, 07:23 PM
There are good first time coaches and bad first time coaches, that much we agree on.
But if you have no idea who else should get the job, how are you in any position to say that Zorn is a mistake? It could be that he is less of a mistake than it would be to hire say, Mariucci, Fassel, or some other retread. Some coaches have just lost touch with players. They don't know how to motivate, or lead today's players. They make mistakes on the field as well as in the locker room. Zorn is a fresh face with a good record of helping a team win. He also helps to shape and mold players into being all they can be.
Players can only listen to the same old thing so long before they need some fresh air. The man for the job is Jim Zorn. He has done nothing to give anyone reason to think that he can't be a good head coach.

Whew, good opening barrage, Willis. I personally favor hiring new guys over guys with "experience" who have failed repeatedly. Zorn has done well in his roles up to now...
I'll wait.

Willis hit hard. Very hard, and good enough for me. I have been giving this thought all day. At first I thought it was a terrible move, but compared to the re-treads it makes sense to give someone like Zorn a chance. Every coach on that list was hired and fired somewhere else, but the key is that someone gave them a chance. Washington is giving Zorn a chance: lets see how he does.
Vote to Willis.

Fassell was a lousy head coach. And has nothing to do with anything.

True, Reid skipped a step in the coaching ranks, however he is definitly the exception rather than the rule.

How will he prove himself to be a "great" coach. Great=HOF doesn't it.
What pedigree does he have or collection of work that makes you think that?

Total Comments (506)
Because Zorn has ties to the Seahawks. Anything Seahawk related has NORCALSURFER777 shouting from the rooftops how great it is. Snyder could have a hired a turd to be head coach, and if that turd was fished out of the Seahawks team facility toilets it would be a "great move" according to NORCAL.

Under Zorn's tutelage, Hasselbeck has twice set the franchise record for season passing yards and owns the team mark for most completions in a season. Hasselbeck passed Zorn for second place on the all-time passing-yardage list in November." ---seattle times
