Not only is he the best backup qb, he may be the toughest qb period playing through that injury this year. He is so good he most likely should be the starter. Just look at this stats from just last year when he steped in:

3417 yards
62.3 cmp%
27 TDs
17 INTs

And he also did this all behind a average at best line imitating a pirate. The man couldn't even hand the ball off with his other hand! And I know what some of you might say, he's not the starter. But according to Ken W. the pretty boy from the O.C. is still their number one.

How many teams can say they have a league mvp and superbowl champ riding the bench?

Warner is tough and had a good statistical year but he and the Cards were inconsistent.

Some points:
1 - Warner won the starting job before Leinart was injured.
2 - Leinart is the Cards QB of the future - or at least they hope so.

Calling Warner a back-up is a matter of semantics. He finished 2007 as the clear starter.

Chad Pennington is the best true backup QB in the NFL only he's only a year removed from leading the (lowly) Jets to the playoffs.

Warner was an elite QB but that was 6-7 years ago on the powerful Ram teams @2000. He has never led an inferior team to a winning record as he's proven with the Cards and Giants.

Pennington's job was given to Clemens because the Jets were awful and he was sacked 26 times in 286 attempts (9%).

I disagree. The Cards OL is good (young) having allowed Warner to be sacked only 20 times in 471 attempts (4%).

Pennington has proven that he can win with a lesser team and there's no question that he is now the back-up QB of the Jets. Both are very accurate career passers.

My definition of a great backup qb would be someone who I feel comfortable starting at any time. Kurt is that man.

And Kurt Warner being a back up isn't a matter of sematics, its a matter of a something as simple as the depth chart.

I dont want Chad leading any team. His record in games were he takes the snaps is 34-41. I dont think thats even, elite backup status let alone starter status.

Chad is one year removed from playing a overly easy schedule and walking into the playoffs only to get spanked by the pats.

THEY ONLY BEAT ONE TEAM WITH A WINNING RECORD THAT SEASON!

Just last year as the starter, Kurt got wins over playoff teams such as the Seahawks and Steelers and also beat the Browns who missed the playoffs by a hair.

You would honestly want Chad "Tee Shirt Cannon" Pennington as your backup over a proven superbowl champion vetran like Warner who proved themselves most recently as last year?

Your "facts" need correction:

1-What depth chart? Warner is #1 on ESPN and NFL.Com depth charts.
2-Warner / Cards LOST to the Seahawks this year.
3-Pennington is 32-34 since starting, not 32-41.

FACTS since 2002 (10+ passes/game):

Team record with Pennington 32-34, without 11-19, overall 43-53
Team record with Warner 16-29, without 27-24, overall 43-53

Pennington: 3 playoffs, (2 playoff wins)
Warner: 0 playoffs

Pennington, 80td, 55int.
Warner, 54td, 47int

Pennington 3 years with a winning record
Warner 0

Pennington beat 9 teams with a winning record (28%)
Warner beat 3 teams with a winning record (18%)

Warners record since 2002 is very weak and the QB from 1999-2001 is long gone. How much of his 2007 stats were Fitzgerald and Boldin?

Pennington has faults but he's a smart field general who executes game plans well, improves his team and can get his team to the playoffs. Isn't that what matters? He'll be 31 and Warner 36.

The NFL is all about winning and clearly Pennington does that better now.

Yes, you're correct, Pennington did beat the Patriots last year.

I'll admit, one of my stats need correcting. I incorrectly said that he beat the Seahawks, thinking he was trading snaps in week 2 when the cardinals defeated Seattle but i was wrong. For that I apologize.

But my two other "facts were absolutely correct".

The depth chart on espn and nfl.com are from last year and include Matt L on the IR. Even you should know that your trying to feed everyone some BS.

Here is a quote from Ken: ???I don???t believe in a player losing his job because of injury, and that???s what happened with Matt.??? Matt is number one on the only depth chart that matters, the one in the coaches head.

I also said "HIS RECORD IN GAMES WERE HE TAKES SNAPS IS 32-41"
I never said as a starter like you claimed. That means every game he played in, that was his record.

Kurt is an experienced vetran who put up good starter stats last year stepping in after week 2 and playing with a serious injury.

What did Chad do as recent as last year. He threw 10 TDs to 9 ints and got replaced by a second year man. Kurt is so much better, he could have easily started for the Jets.

Can you honestly tell me you would want Pennington over Warner?

You're a difficult opponent because I have to spend so much time correcting your stats.

"The depth chart on espn and nfl.com are from last year "
Last year in football ended 10 days ago. Warner was the starter.

You quote out of context from an article titled "Cards QB Speculation Begins". Link: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/1230cardsnb1231.html

Think Leinart feels confident after Jack Del Rio comments about Byron Leftwich and Crennel on Charlie Fry last year?

"HIS RECORD IN GAMES WERE HE TAKES SNAPS IS 32-41"
WRONG. Pennington has played in 69 games, not 73 as you state. My stats counted games where either QB had 10+ passes. Mop-up games shouldn't be counted (3 for Chad, 2 for Kurt). Very sneaky to add 4 losses to his career. You got this wrong twice.

Accurate stats: Pennington sacked 9%, Warner 4%. Had Chad played with the Cards they would have made the playoffs. At this point in their careers I take Pennington over Warner in a heartbeat. You're living in the past.

I truly believe if Warner could trade spaces with Brady, the Pats wouldn't miss a beat. He's always been accurate, and with Moss and the O-line...that's gonna bring rings. Nonetheless, at this time he is considered a backup, you can't dismiss the Ring, and the MVP who beat my beloved Titans (by a FREAKIN' yard short of OT!), which means my vote should count for two!...Kurt is the best backup QB in the NFL. He's still sharp and I think Leinhert has his work cut out for 'em!

February 12, 2008  05:34 AM ET

Kurt Warner hasn't been that player since 2001. He has heart but Warner hasn't done anything reminiscent of those days since.

Vote --------------->

Better argument.

February 12, 2008  07:39 AM ET

Warner wasn't really a backup, so I have to vote right.

February 12, 2008  08:32 AM ET

how can you vote when both people are wrong?

February 12, 2008  09:05 AM ET

warner is a backup you idiot! look at the depth chart.

February 12, 2008  09:06 AM ET

its as simple as that.

February 12, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Except that Warner is a backup. Just because the coaching staff dithered around when Leinart was playing crappy does not mean Warner is a starter. Anyone want to make a bet on who's lining up under center for the Cardinals first snap of 08?

February 12, 2008  12:17 PM ET

I must be an idiot cuz I dont consider Warner a backup. Yes Leinart will be lining up at center next year but this pass year, Warner was the man. It was a blessing that Leinart got injured because Warner wouldve eventually gotten the starting job.

February 12, 2008  12:17 PM ET

I'll wait to vote and see how the arguments pan out

February 12, 2008  12:51 PM ET

You had time call people names but didn't make your 2nd argument?

February 12, 2008  01:11 PM ET

"I truly believe if Warner could trade spaces with Brady, the Pats wouldn't miss a beat."

Titan6, I can't believe you actually said that. Warner is a good 6 years past his prime. Actually with the team he had around him in St. Louis, a third of the QB's in the league would've won the superbowl that year. I seriously doubt he ever makes it to the HoF based on his careeer to date.

February 12, 2008  05:48 PM ET

right now my vote is to <----- (yes warner is the backup)....personally i think charlie batch might be the best backup because I think a backup is a lot more than stats....but thats for another day...i'll be back to see if last 4 arguments change my mind......and elway: welcome to the leaderboard - but refrain from namecalling...thats not the example you want to set for the increased views of your TDs due to your higher publicity

February 12, 2008  11:10 PM ET

uh yeah i did because i dont know if you have a great concept of time but that took be 10 seconds. writing a well thought out arguement can take five

5 min > 10 sec

and i apologize for calling him an idiot i just hate that people bring that up after i already explained it.

February 12, 2008  11:14 PM ET

and im glad your welcoming me to the leaderboard but i was on this site for four months then left before you even joined this site. so no offense but i was on the leaderboard far before you knew this existed.

February 12, 2008  11:16 PM ET

and i say that with the most respect possible because i realize you have more wins than me.

February 13, 2008  12:51 PM ET

I would have to go with Kurt Warner on this one. I think he should be the starter going into next year. Matt showed some flashes, and probably will be great, but you can't ignore that kind of production from Warner. Chad Pennington? I don't even know what to say about that. That guy wouldn't be picked up in backyard game where I'm from. He should've been cut a couple years back.

February 14, 2008  12:10 AM ET

The link I mention was cut off: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/1230cardsnb12 31.html

February 14, 2008  12:20 AM ET

I actually did not quote that website. I dont know were your getting that from. You have barely defended yourself while only try to create doubt even though your incorrect in doing so. I meant last season which began last year which Kurt began on the bench and ended as the starter ONLY BECAUSE OF INJURY.

And he has played in 70 games not 69. See i can nitpick at things that dont matter too. For adding 3 games to the total i apologize. At first I counted by hand. Im sry for being human.

February 14, 2008  12:24 AM ET

You know what none of this even matters. Let the better arguement win. Thanks for the competition.
