Bronko Nagurski was his blocking back. Why do you think they called him the "Galloping Ghost." As a sophomore in college at the University of Illinois, he rushed for 723 yards and 12 touchdowns and leading the Fighting Illini to an undefeated season and a national championship in 1923.

First off, this is the 1920s we're talking about.

Red Grange played QB, RB, WR, attempted one kick, and played DB.

Personally, I'd have to go with Jim Thorpe. The man was destructive.

A man who played more positions and won more championships is better. Jim Thorpe played for more teams than Red Grange, and besides, Red Grange played in more games than Jim Thorpe. 96 games compared to 38. Thorpe played for 6 teams, while Grange played for 2 teams. Grange is better and more loyal to his team.

Thorpe was absolutely unstoppable.

Said of him by Pop Warner: "Thorpe ran around past and through them not once, but twice."

Said of him by Eisenhower: "Here and there, there are some people who are supremely endowed. My memory goes back to Jim Thorpe. He never practiced in his life, and he could do anything better than any other football player I ever saw."

Do you also not know the legend of Thorpe? How he punted a ball 95 yards? How he scored a 92 yard TD, only to have it called back because of a penalty, only to score a 97 yard TD the very next play? Or how against Harvard in college he kicked 4 FGs and scored a TD to lead his team to an 18-15 upset?

Thorpe played defense, he ran, he passed, he caught, he kicked. He won three championships.

Here are some dates: October 6, 1923, the Galloping Ghost makes his debut for Illinois against Nebraska with touchdown runs of 50, 35, 12 yards. October 18, 1924, he scores four touchdowns in the first 12 minutes against Michigan on runs of 95, 67, 56, 44 yards. For the day he carries the ball 21 times for 402 yards. November 8, 1924 he runs for 300 yards, passes for 177 against Chicago. October 31, 1925, Grange runs 36 times, gains 363 yards and has two 65-yard touchdowns against Pennsylvania. He played only 20 games in college but had 31 touchdowns and 3,362 yards. Grange was born June 13, 1903. Over his career - high school at Wheaton, Illinois; college at Illinois, pro with the Chicago Bears, he carried the ball 4,103 times, gained 33,920 yards, an average of 8.4 per try. He died January 28, 1991.

What the hey happened to the "forfeit the turn" option -_-"

Well, Nagurski also played QB (and I have a Bronko Nagurski card!!!!)

June 5, 2007  08:53 PM ET

Its not the Thorpe award for nothing

June 5, 2007  08:56 PM ET

Oh wait, thats a DB award, never mind

June 5, 2007  09:05 PM ET

He not "The Galloping Ghost" for nothing, Dcolst#4.

June 5, 2007  09:13 PM ET

My bad, my vote is definitely changeable. I'll wait till the arguements come in. I just read about both but i want to see what you guys have to say

June 5, 2007  09:26 PM ET

You got it buddy.

June 5, 2007  09:37 PM ET

How 'bout George Gipp!

June 5, 2007  09:44 PM ET

George Gipp died in 1920, he never played in 1920. READ THE HEADLINE.

June 5, 2007  09:45 PM ET

Let me rephrase that: He did play in 1920, just not throughout the 1920's.

June 6, 2007  12:44 AM ET

Sorry about putting the date of birth and when he died on there, it doesn't mean anything in the argument. I just wanted to use up all the space I could.

June 6, 2007  01:02 AM ET

I'll make my final argument later, but if you must know, there was no specific running back position back then.

People played whatever they could.

June 6, 2007  01:04 AM ET

No doubt, good luck with that argument.

June 6, 2007  09:02 PM ET

As I said, I'll forfeit the last turn.

Not even the HoF has complete stats.

June 6, 2007  09:02 PM ET

What the heck?

Did they remove the option to forfeit a turn?

June 6, 2007  09:04 PM ET

This is ridiculous. Nobody on here was born when he was playing.

June 6, 2007  09:11 PM ET

wasnt alive then so cant vote

June 6, 2007  09:16 PM ET

It doesn't matter whether or not you were born; either vote or not. You can have read something about him, how else is VY, Jr. getting his stats.

June 6, 2007  09:31 PM ET

Exactly, thank you Big Ben68.

June 6, 2007  09:55 PM ET

Like, the HoF only lists what, 38 games?

I found somewhere that said he played in over 60.

June 6, 2007  09:58 PM ET

that may be true, but we'll never know for sure. least not right now anyway.
