I say that Adrain Peterson is not among the top 3 running backs in the league. My first reason is that he took the NFL by surprise. Also he is inconsisent. He's the type of back that can gain 80 or lose 7 on any given play. The 3 backs who are better than him are Ladainian Tomlinson,Steven Jackson, and Willie Parker. Adrian is good but it's too early in his career to tell if he's great.

i strongly disagree
lemme throw some records hes all ready set at you:
most games rushing 200+ yards in a rookie season (2)
Vikings single game rushing record (224 yrds set against the Bears.. that was embarrassing. I wanted to cry)
and last but not least...
Most yardage rushed in NFL history (296)
heres some awards theyre throwin at him:
Offensive ROY
AP ROY
Diet Pepsi ROY
( i dont know what the difference is between those two but whatever)
Pro Bowl MVP
and hes in his rookie year mind you, so hes only gunna get better
Dylan623 said 02/12, 11:00 PM
Adrian Peterson is way to inconsisent . Plus the fact that he was Offensive ROY,AP ROY, and Diet Pepsi ROY doesn't make him better than LT or Willie Parker or Steven Jackson. Remeber he was running against rookies for those awards so that doesn't prove that he beat out those 3. Plus, the Pro Bowl MVP means nothing because first off all, some players didn't even bother to come to the game and everyone who isn't named Sean Talyor (may he rest in peace) has never played that game with any little bit of energy.
Stauff Nation TB said 02/12, 11:15 PM
Adrian Peterson rushed for 5.6 yards per carry....
Parker ran for 4.1 yards per carry and Jackson ran for 4.2 yards per carry
he even averaged more than LT (4.7 yards per carry) but dont freak out cus im not sayin hes better than LT
hes got more yards per carry than all the guys on your list, so how is he inconsistant?
... so Rookie of the Year Awards dont mean anything anymore? even though he beat out other top rookies (Patrick Willis led the league in tackles)
AP got more yards (1341 yards) than Parker (1316 yards) and Jackson (1002 yards, nowhere near his prediction was he?)... more touchdowns (AP had 12 rushing, Parker had 2 and Jackson had 5)
hes beating out two of your top 3 running backs in 3 really important (some of the most important) catagories... so how is he better
the "hes-only-been-playing-for-one-year-so-he-cant-be-in-the-top-3" thing is ridiculous. People dont rate running backs on how they've played in the last 3 seasons! They rate them at where they're at right NOW...
right now Adrian Peterson is pretty close to the top.
Dylan623 said 02/12, 11:50 PM
Look at it this way. The reason he is inconsisent is because of the fact that he disapeared during the last part of the season.
For the first 2 months of the season Adrain had 740 yds on 128 attempts which averages 5.9 yards per carry. That's good but for the final 2 months of the season he had 110 attempts for 601 yds which averages 6 yards per carry which seems great. But if you focus on December he played very bad during this time.
During December his stats were
69 attempts
260 yards
3.8 yards per carry.
Plus the fact that his team was in the playoff hunt makes it even worse. So he basically chocked during the most important time of the year. I don't think one of the top 3 running backs in the NFL would put up those kinds of numbers during that time. You can't even make the excuse that he was facing good running teams because 4 of his 5 opponents were the Chicago Bears,Denver Broncos,Detriot Lions, and San Franciso 49ers.
Bears are ranked 24th in the league in running defense.
Broncos are ranked 30th in the league in rushing defense
Lions are ranked 23rd in the league in running defense
49ers are ranked 22nd in the league in running defense.
Stauff Nation TB said 02/13, 09:15 AM
You wanna talk about inconsistancy?
Parker
Week 4 averaged 1.9 yards per carry
Week 9= 1.8 ypc
Week 11= 2.5
Week 13= 3.1
Week 16= -1 (one carry where he lost a yard)
only had 5 games where he averaged at least 5 yards a carry
Jackson
Week 1= 3.2 ypc
Week 2= 2.9
Week 10= 3.5
Week 17= 3.1
In 12 games he only averaged over 5 ypc 4 times. inconsistant at beginning and end
So...
Adrian Peterson's numbers are better than Parker's or Jackson's and as Ive just shown all three have had their fair share of inconsistant games.
However once again the numbers show that Peterson was more consistant than Jackson or Parker were this last season.
I think all you need is a season to prove what type of caliber player you are in the NFL. Its not like were crunching these numbers in Week 5 or anything. We've seen what he's done and we've seen how dangerous a runner he is.
You failed to address Adrian Peterson's numbers in your arguement and only decided to call him inconsistant even though Parker and Jackson are more inconsistant than him.
"I don't think that the top 3 running backs in the NFL would put up those kinds of numbers..."
2 of yours did more than AP.

Gotta do it for more than one year to take the top spot. Clinton is easily the best blocking back in the game and I compare him to Walter Payton... only of course worse at everything.

Wow, 5.4 as a backup? Something is messed up here. We have to look deeper.

Wow, if they have three RB who put up 5 a carry, why do they keep all 3? They must be superstars right?
Nope. Truth behind all this is an offensive line that is way too stacked.
LT- Bryant McKinnie- pro bowler
LG- Steve Hutchinson- pro bowler HOFer
C- Matt Birk- Premier C in the game. Pro bowler. One of the best.
They make them look better. I love Adrian and he is good, but top 3 no way.

running backs are only as good as their lines...
does that mean we should be ranking O lines instead of running backs then?

Report Offensive CommentI say Peterson is elite in a few seasons. For now he is just an unproven rookie who seems to be a good running back with lots of potential.
Dylan623 | 02/12/08, 11:06 PM
Report Offensive CommentNot true about needing a wonderful o-line to be good in this league. Barry Sanders is living proff of that. You can get away with an okay offensive lone if you are really good enough to be an elite back.
Dylan623 | 02/12/08, 11:08 PM
Report Offensive Commentthats cus barry sanders is one of the best running backs of all time, but if you want to be a good running back, your not going anywhere on your own unless your one in a million (barry sanders, walter payton, Emmit Smith, etc) The whole point of the O line being there is to protect the ball, and good running backs have good offensive lines. Usually its the same with Quarterbacks.... QBs are better off the more time they have to throw. If youve got the right protection your gunna have time to enjoy yourself and make throws.... if youve got protection u got time to pick out bigger gaps in the defense, getting more yards...
the offensive line theory is irrelevant in my book cus all four of these guys wouldnt have as good numbers if their Olines sucked.

Emmit had a great o-line and is not a one- in a million back. He's just a very good back who played on a great overall team for a long time.

Report Offensive CommentTough call no doubt. But if the question is saying, going into next season is he among the top 3? Based on what he did compared to everyone else last year, he's definetly in the top 3. Its all about what have you done for me lately, and lately the dude has been playing Top-3 football IMO.

Report Offensive CommentHow can you possibly use Rookie of the year awards when trying to compare him with other running backs who arent rookies?
Know it all | 02/13/08, 12:51 AM
Report Offensive CommentObviously you can't look past his offensive line, You could put quite a few backs in the league behind that line (LT, Westbrooke, Parker, Portis, Jackson) and they'd put up the numbers he did. A lot of his signature runs he didn't get touched for 5-10 yards, then it was just one broken tackle and he was off to the races.
