There is no other team in the American League that can match the firepower of the Red Sox's pitchers, having the second best ERA in MLB with 3.87, sixth in strikeouts with 1149, and the pop of their batters, fourth in runs and RBIs with 867 and 829 respectively. And who can handicap their mental toughness, being able to come back from a 3-1 hole to the Indians in the ALCS and then sweeping the Rockies in the World Series.

KK so you chose the Bo-sox side, who are indeed my fav. team but your saying that they will take the AL, I mean so many things could happen, and there are in fact a few other elite teams in the AL, lets say the Yankees, ok not their best season last year, but I mean they are just one of the MANY teams who could have a big year, the Red Sox may be good, but that is one huge assumption to make before the season even starts.

Yeah, this is a huge assumption to make before spring training starts but thats why I'm making it. Right now I think the Bo-sox will repeat as AL champs. Who do you think can take them? The Yankees don't have any solid pitching.

Yankees pitching is fine, fielding is great, amazing hitter, they have MVP of league, enuf said

Okay, so they got Arod, who has yet to be effective in the playoffs. The Red Sox has the rookie of the year with Pedroia, and a future star in outfielder Ellsbury and pitcher Bucholz. Ortiz and Rameriz are consistant, while Arod hasn't been. On pitching, who do they have as an ace? Petite is on the decline, and Rivera had a terrible year last year. Boston has Beckett, the only 20 game winner last year. Papelbon has been lights out for the Red Sox. Sadly for the Yanks, it looks like Boston is going to be the team to beat this year with much of the same team returning. Who cares about MVP of the league, the Rockies made it to the World Series with no MVPs. Boston is the better team, while the Yankees just have Arod.

dude once again the yankess are one of many teams that could easily win the AL, Yankees pitchers aren't planning to play awful you know, they are going to play hard and try to redeem themselves, lastly there was a reason for AROD being mvp you know,a dn if the rockies can make it to the world series in the fashion that they did, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN

The Red Sox rotation has Beckett (which Beckett will show up, 2006 or 2007 Beckett), Dice K (now that they've seen him, will the league adjust? His 4.40 ERA wasn't exactly breathtaking, but his 5.19 ERA after the break showed that the league was adjusting and he was wearing down), Schilling, or NOT...maybe only half a season, maybe no season...who knows? Wake is horrible and wins cause of team scoring...Lester (career ERA over 4.50)....and then the rookie Clay who will, for now, start in Schilling's place and if Schilling comes back, and Buchholtz is doing well, he stays in Wake's spot... This rotation isn't exactly a rotation without questions...can't assume the team ERA will be as good as it was last year...with their hitting the pitchers win anyway, but Beckett and Schilling were the only ones with good numbers and Schilling missed 9, 10 games...

Red Sox against the rest of the AL? I'll take the AL---> Wanna put a few dollars down on that?

February 13, 2008  04:02 PM ET

lol i sure would

February 13, 2008  04:16 PM ET

The Tigers are going to be the team to beat in the AL. They are loaded from top to bottom.

February 14, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Don't sleep on the Indians...

February 14, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Go figure- only Red Sox fans can suddenly forget about the Tigers, Tribe, Angels, Mariners, and heck- I even think the Rays might suprise them alot by not rolling over for them. It's gonna be an even nastier year in the AL period, and the Red Sox fans still think they own it...

That's a good one.

his [Matsuzaka's] 5.19 ERA after the break showed that the league was adjusting and he was wearing down

Jim L. | 02/13/08, 03:37 PM

Wearing down, I'd agree with. Adjusting, maybe slightly, but he was still striking batters out at a clip of 8.3K/9inn. I personally expect a better year from Matsuaka this year.

February 14, 2008  03:20 PM ET

we'll see...

February 14, 2008  03:27 PM ET

I expect there to be a fall off for the dice man, I do not buy into him improving this year, not statswise anyway. When noone has seen a pitcher before advantage pitcher. We will see this year who is ruight on this one. But, this still has to go as an unknown and not a foregone conclusion. Dice is a question mark and not an exclamaition point,

February 14, 2008  03:52 PM ET

Luckily, the Red Sox Don't have to rely on Dice-k because of their depth. Bucholz pitched a no-hitter in only his second start.

If the Red Sox sign Bonds, THEN they have a real shot at another ring.

February 14, 2008  05:01 PM ET

And where would they plug in Bonds, Willis?

If the Red Sox don't win the AL East it won't be because of the Devil Rays...I guarantee that much...
