The Big East Men's Basketball Player of the Year is definitely Notre Dame's Luke Harangody (despite the fact that he will get shut down by my Huskies tonight!.

In Big East play, the big Sophomore is averaging 23.5 PPG a game in conference play, which leads the Big East by over three points. He is also averaging 11.7 rebounds per game, leading the conference again by a full rebound per game. He also leads individually in offensive (4.20) and defensive (7.50) reboundsper game. As a bonus, he's 78/98 on free throws this year, good for 80.6 percent and 8th in the conference.

He's led a surprsing Notre Dame team to be the 18th ranked team in the country (27th in the RPI) and a team that leads the Big East in scoring by 6 points per game.

Harangody's emergence as a star has been the driving force behind that success and if I had a vote for player of the year, I would give it to Luke Harangody.

After a long time thinking about this, I would have to go with Jeff Adrien of Uconn.
Until tonight against Uconn, Harangody hadn't really been able to step up in a big game.
Adrien, on the other hand, has shown up and put up numbers in every big game the Huskies have played this season. Tonight in the matchup between these two teams, he was able to grab six offensive rebounds. Those rebounds on offense were a huge part in helping the Huskies win the game by six points.
Harangody, on the other hand, has not stepped it up in the big games. Against Georgetown, he only managed thirteen points and eight rebounds.
Uconn was not able to even make the NIT last season, and they could be one of the ten best teams this season. After a shaky start, the Huskies have managed to win eight straight games, including big wins at home against Pitt, Marquette, Georgia Tech, and Notre Dame, and a huge win on the road against Indiana. In that game against Indiana, Adrien grabbed eleven rebounds on the defensive side alone.
Adrien averages a block more per game, along with having a couple percentage points higher in his shooting percentage than Harangody.

Great argument, I love Jeff Adrien.

However, I don't think he's done this alone and isn't the MVP of the UConn team, let alone the conference. That "honor" belongs to PG A.J. Price. He has matured like crazy this year and is the biggest reason (aside from Jim Calhoun) for the Huskies' success.

A little more on the supporting casts: Harangody plays on the higher scoring team, yes, but his team only has two other players that average double figures in conference games, while Jeff has three others. Harangody is also the only one on either team that averages in double figures for rebounding.

On to the numbers: Harangody is averaging 8.2 more points per game and 2 more rebs pg (note: these are in conference numbers).

Including last night, Harangody has led Notre Dame in scoring and rebounding in 8/11 Big East games. In 10/11 he's led the team in rebounding alone, and in 9/11, he's led in scoring alone. Including last night, Adrien has only led in scoring/rebounding 4 times.

As much as I love Jeff Adrien, I don't think he's been as valuable to his team as Luke Harangody has to his.

Forfeited Turn

alrighty, no argument from leech so i'll just make this a shorter one for my last one:

Both players are great but Harangody has meant more to ND than Adrien has to UConn. I'd love it if Jeff Adrien won POTY for the Big East but this just isn't is year. Harangody has the stats edge (24.3 PPG/12.1 RPG to 15.3 PPG/9.2 RPG) and is a more essential part of his team's success than Jeff Adrien, due to his "lesser" (I use the term very loosely) supporting cast.

Luke Harangody is a contender for NATIONAL Player of the Year and should, and probably will, win Big East Player of the Year.

good luck, Leech.

February 13, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Good luck. This might take me a little while to think of someone better.

February 13, 2008  11:01 AM ET

okay, cool. i'm gonna be around til around 3, then i have class til 4. after that, i may be around then i have film at 6-9 (boo, missing the game tonight!)

February 13, 2008  11:21 AM ET

I have to switch classes in a few minutes, so I might not be able to get it in tonight. I just can't pick someone who I think I can win with. I want to pick Blair, but his ppg is to low for people to be convinced. I am thinking about picking your boy Adrien.

February 13, 2008  11:26 AM ET

oh man, it'll break my heart to argue against him but if i've gotta do it.., haha.

February 13, 2008  12:36 PM ET

Without going into detail since the arguments are still open, I'd argue Sam Young from Pitt. I'll explain later.

February 13, 2008  11:03 PM ET

I considered Young, but he wouldn't get enough love. He was able to come in and hold Pitt together after the bad injuries to Fields and Cook.

February 14, 2008  05:27 AM ET

True, no love for Pitt or Young, but he's kept this team ranked and with an impressive record given Pitt lost 2 starters early who were both averaging over 10 pts a game. Not to mention an impressive performance in leading Pitt to victory over Duke, AT Duke.

Without Young, Pitt might be struggling to get into the Big Dance, let alone to be ranked. That to me is what defines an MVP type award, not simply who has the best stats.

leech, i'm sneding this out to a few basketball groups becuase we're already off the main page and have no shot of getting back. when it's over, we'll send it out to the community.

We are talking the better overall player here, right? All the Huskie players have stepepd up their games and it has been a team effort that has propelled them into the top twenty at his point. Even Thabeet has begun playing like a real center lately. [horrors!!!!! ;)] But which palyer for UConn has stood out every game as much as Luke Harangody has for ND? None that jumps and grabs my attention. UConn has more of a team concept while ND tends to rely on the big effort from their main man. I gotta go with Harangrody as player of the year but UConn may be the team holding up the Big East championship banner at season's end because of that team effort.

February 14, 2008  11:55 AM ET

i hope you're right. a conf. championship after last year would be amazing. if Thabeet stays another year and Adrien and Price do as well (which i'm sure htey will) and UConn can land a top recruit (Tykre Evans, please?, we've already got verbals from Kemba Walker, #3 PG in the country and Nate Miles, a 3 pt. shooter which is what UConn needs ), next year could be a Nat'l. Championship caliber season.

i'm very conflicted on Thabeet. he's definitely not NBA ready--still plays smaller than he is, toughness could be a factor--but he needs the money to send back to Tanzania. i hope that if he stays, he improves again like he did this year to get himself an even bigger pay day in the NBA. if he stays, i'll be happy for the team. if he leaves, i'll be happy for him personally.

Guys, Harangody is in National player of year territory, he is having a great, year, not only does he fill the stat sheet, but he plays great defense, and plays 35 min a game, for a big man thats great, and he plays 35 min full speed up & down the court, now I am not saying he is National player of year, of course its Beasley, but he is in conversation, so I guess you know who gets my vote

February 14, 2008  06:35 PM ET

wow jetstolehome owning this with picking luke h. he's got my vote. i agree with dleech on a couple of points, but i agree with jetstolehome on this

"However, I don't think he's done this alone and isn't the MVP of the UConn team, let alone the conference. That "honor" belongs to PG A.J. Price. He has matured like crazy this year and is the biggest reason (aside from Jim Calhoun) for the Huskies' success. "
