Tournament Throwdowns Tourney XIV Championship...#9 G.O.A.T. vs. Super Squirrel...

Create an 8 player NBA team spending at least 30 million and no more than 50 million. (No rookie contracts...a.k.a., no Chris Paul...)

PG:Mo Williams-$7,750,000
SG:Leandro Barbosa-$5,600,000
SF:Corey Maggette-$7,000,000
PF:Chris Wilcox-$6,500,000
C:Chris Kaman-$8,600,000

Bench:Brendan Haywood-$5,000,000
Bench:Juan Carlos Navarro-$538,090
Bench:Hedo Turkoglu-$6,373,900

Total: $47,361,990

PG: Steve Nash- $11,375,000
SG: Kevin Martin- $1,808,120
SF: Ron Artest- $7,800,000
PF: Travis Outlaw- $4,000,000
C: Chris Kaman- $8,600,000

Bench: Hedo Turkoglu- $6,373,900
Bench: Raja Bell- $4,750,000
Bench: DeShawn Stevenson- $3,348,214

TOTAL: $48,055,234

I tried to make my team very different from yours instead of only picking one of two guys that weren't on your team.

Mo Williams vs. Steve Nash-
I don't even think this really needs to be argued. Nash is definitely better than Williams. He has a better team, more experience, and better stats.
Nash: 17 pts, 4 reb, 12 ast
Williams: 18 pts, 4 reb, 7 ast
Mo is scoring 1 more point per game on 5 less assists. Nash is better.

Kevin Martin vs. Leandro Barbosa-
Martin: 23 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast
Barbosa: 17 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast
Leandro has one more assist while K-Mart has 6 more points and 2 more rebounds per game on his resume. Martin is putting up that nice points per game average with defenses all over him as he is one of Sacramento's few offensive weapons this year.

So far it is 2-0 in my favor.

There is much more to come as we have different players everywhere except at center and one spot on the bench.

OK....

Williams vs. Nash: Nash
Maggette vs. Artest:

Maggette averages 2.6 more points per game, and is an almost 20% better free throw shooter than Artest. They basically have the same types of stats, but Maggette is a much better value, saving a team $800,000.

Wilcox vs. Outlaw

They both average just about 13 points, and are equal in every other category, except rebounds, where Wilcox averages 2.5 more per game. Outlaw is the better value, but I'd rather have Wilcox on my team.

Kaman vs. Kaman: Kaman by a MILE!

Navarro vs. Bell:

Both have incredibly similar stats, Bell averaging 1.6 more points and 1 rebound per game more, while being paid over $4,000,000 more.

So far it's 3-1 me...

Since I cannot use Kevin Martin, I will be taking Trevor Ariza ($2,710,800), which brings my total to $48,957,914.

Next, how the heck does value have anything to do with this throwdown? Value means nothing. We just needed a team with 8 players between 30 and 50 million dollars in payroll. What they individually cost means absolutely nothing!

Maggette and Artest have similar stats but you have to remember that Artest is a lockdown defender for your team. He will guard the other team's best player and do a heck of a job for you. He was, in fact, the 2004 DPOY. Edge: Artest

2-0 in my favor.

Trevor Ariza vs. Leandro Barbosa-
I think Barbosa is better so you take this one.

Chris Wilcox vs. Travis Outlaw-
Almost identical stats if not for Wilcox having the 2 rpg advantage. For me, however, I like a guy who's a threat from anywhere he is on the court. That's why I would take Outlaw who shoots 40% on three-pointers while Wilcox shoots 0%. Outlaw is also more reliable from the line than Wilcox.

With a guy like Outlaw, it forces the defense to play out on the perimeter with my big guy. Now my guards (Nash, Ariza, Bell, Stephenson) to drive the lane.

3-1 in my favor.

Stevenson vs. Haywood-

It's kind of weird comparing a 6'5" guard to a 7'0" center, but I believe Haywood is better at what he does than Stevenson. Both average 10 points a game, but Haywood averages 7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks to Stevenson's 3 boards and 3 assists. Now, there's no doubt who I would take to shoot a 3, but in terms of overall field goal percentage, Haywood is a 15.6% better shooter than Stevenson.

2-3

I think value of players is important in a TD like this to save money. If I can get a guy like Navarro, who puts out the same offensive statistics, who may be, yes, not as good of a defender for almost $4,000,000 less, I'm taking him. That's probably just me though....

Outlaw vs. Wilcox-

I can see why you'd want a guy who can hit from anywhere, but having two guys who are prescences in the post with Kaman and Wilcox opens up the other guys for the shots you want Outlaw to take. 5% better free throw shooter is big, but I wouldn't base my entire decision off of it....

Artest may be a defensive stud, but Maggette is a better offensive player, and is by no means a slouch on the defensive end.

Juan Carlos Navarro vs. Raja Bell-
Bell: 12 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast
Navarro: 11 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast
Once again, I took a guy who had similar stats to yours but someone who is fantastic on the defensive end.

I'll give you Haywood over Stephenson. I'm still up 4-2.

Regarding Outlaw, I am not basing my entire decision off his better free throw shooting either. I'm not sure what you meant when you said that, but I mostly based it off his ability to shoot the long ball which would open up the lane for my guards to penetrate.

Next...how much better of an offensive player can Maggette be when he only averages three more points per game?

Defense wins championships and that's why my team is better. Bell and Artest can shut down anyone in the league. (Stevenson isn't too bad on the defensive end either.) Add that in with Nash's ability to make the players around him better and I have a pretty good team for less than $50 million.

Bottom Line: My team is better. I obviously have the better playmaker at the point. I have better defensive players. I have just as good, if not better, big men. Finally, my bench is good enough that I don't lose much when I sub players in and out.

This was a difficult throwdown to research. But this should be very good. I'm looking forward to it. Good luck, Super Squirrel.

why can't you use martin?

Report Offensive Comment

Probably the rookie contract thing.

Report Offensive Comment

Yes, I couldn't use Martin because, according to Super Squirrel, he's in the last year of his rookie contract.

Report Offensive Comment

Trevor Ariza is a good choice. I always liked him and I'm happy he has found a home with the Lakers.

Vote to G.O.A.T.

Report Offensive Comment

Goat has a better team. The choice of Nash is masterful. Outlaw is better than Wilcox. Bell and Stevenson are stoppers. Terkoglu is a good shooter. Artest is a better all around player than Maggette.

Report Offensive Comment

This looked difficult to do, I would vote for both of you for just looking this up...

However, I think G.O.A.T. has chosen more solid starters. and a bit better bench...

Report Offensive Comment

I would have grabbed Jose Calderon at 2.4 mill a year, but solid picks nonetheless from both sides.

Report Offensive Comment

I'm not positive, but isn't Calderon still in his rookie contract?

Report Offensive Comment

Yeah...he is...
