Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/15, 04:57 PM
Bruce Bochy said Zito will start Opening Day. I don't think that is a good idea.
1) Zito is 0-3 with a 9.49 era in opening day starts.
2) He had a terrible year last year going 11-13 with a 4.53 era. (just because he finished the year with a 3-2 mark is no excuse)
3) The Giants are rebuilding. Cain and Lincecum have more talent than Zito and both posted lower ERA's last year. Just because Zito gets paid the most is not a good reason get Opening Day. It's common knowledge he is the third or fourth best starter on the team.
4) Cain was the Ace last year with a 3.65 era.(Zito never had an era that good since 2003) The worst run support in the NL gave him a 7-16 record, but he is incredibly strong mentally as well as physically. It would be a great reward after the beating he took last year, to give him the Opening Day start in Dodger Stadium.
One idea is that this will keep the pressure off of Cain. Well, Zito will lose the first game, and the Giants will start the season 0-1, and it will go to Cain in game 2 trying to get the Giants first win. I say don't start the season off on the wrong foot by giving the ball to Zito.

What you said makes a lot of sense, BUT there is a huge problem with the Giants losing faith in Zito. They paid him a 126 million dollar contract! They cannot in any way "give up" on Zito as their ace. They are stuck with his huge salary FOR THE NEXT 6 YEARS! They cannot risk demoralizing him any further by demoting him and taking away his "ace" status.
At the end of the year, Zito did start to improve. At the end of July, Zito had a 5.28 ERA, which he was able to bring down by almost 1 whole earned run. In August, he showed what he was capable of doing by posting a 2.50 ERA.
Zito had a huge amount of pressure on him last year as a result of the huge contract also. The Giants have to stick it out, and hope that Zito will be able to return to his previous form. Zito will have very little pressure on him this year. Also, I don't see how giving Cain the "ace" status will take pressure off of him.
I'm not saying it's an ideal situation for the Giants, but due to the ridiculous amount of money that Zito is making, they have to keep him as their #1 pitcher and ace, at least for one more year. They can't give up on him when he has a contract like that after just one bad season.
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/15, 05:24 PM
Just because Zito is grossly overpaid does not mean he is the ace. Just because a pitcher DOESN't start opening day doesn't they gave up on him, but to give the ball to a guy who had the HIGHEST ERA IN THE ENTIRE GIANTS ROTATION is not a good call.
The Giants would be better suited to match Zito up against other starters with higher era's, not other teams Aces.
The Opening Day start is an honor. Honor should not go to the undeserving, it should go to the guy that earned it. Cain had more quality starts last year than Johan Santana, Roy Oswalt, Eric Bedard, Justin Verlander and Josh Beckett!! That is a fact!
Zito had a career worst year last year. For Zito, the bigger the pressure the worse he plays. The way for Zito to flourish is to stay under the radar and once he actually plays well in the BEGINNING of the year, THEN give him the ball. Don't give the ball to a guy who pitches best in August after the team dead in the water.
TheNest6827 said 02/15, 05:32 PM
If you gave a guy 126 million dollars and he does not start opening day as the ace of your staff, then, yeah, you're giving up on him. They need to give him all of the confidence that they can and taking the 1st starter position away from him now could continue his pitching woes.
Zito has been consistent and proven in the past that he is a very good pitcher. Like you said, he just had a career worst year. That just happens sometimes, especially with pitchers. Zito will rebouind and return to his dominant form. Cain, on the other hand, is a young pitcher who last year nobody really knew much about and not many guys had seen his stuff yet. He hasn't proven anything in the MLB yet.
The opening day start should go to the veteran pitcher who is the leader of your staff. In this case, that guy is Zito.
Cain-Willis. In & Out... said 02/15, 05:50 PM
Zito is a slow-throwing lefty. He is much more suited to being sloted between Cain and Lincecum, two fire-balling right-handers.
Cain is ranked 5th in the NL in Quality Start %. Zito is 25th. No bueno amigo.
You think Zito will rebound? Huh? He has an 80-83 mph fastball. He loses speed on that pitch ever year since he broke into the majors. Dominant? He hasn't been dominant since 2002, and you think 2008 is his comeback year? What?
You follow baseball dude? Cain is well known around baseball! Do some research. Cain is the Giants chance to start the season off right. Last year in 5 April starts he gave up 12 hits for a 1.54 era. Dominating.
Cain is a rising star, any baseball officianado(?) will tell you that. Zito on the other hand, can only hope for a 14-10 season.
Cain HAS proven a lot in baseball! And Zito was never 'dominant' last year. Or the four years before. He was 'lucky', 'elusive', 'tricky', and such, but not dominant. Matt Cain has made 70 MLB starts, don't lie to me and say 'not many guys have seen his stuff'.
There is no way Zito should get opening day, no matter how badly he is overpaid.
TheNest6827 said 02/15, 06:02 PM
Cain just finished his 2nd full year in the majors, so yeah I would consider that LAST YEAR not many people had heard all that much about him. This year, guys will be prepared for his stuff and will know a lot better what to expect. How has having one good year in baseball (he had a 4.15 ERA in 2006) proving a lot in baseball?
Also, I know Cain had awful run support, but, still, he was 7-16! That is terrible, bad run support or not. Cain is just not ready to assume the role as the leding pitcher of the Giants staff.
So, Zito doesn't have a 100 mph fastball. Is that a neccesity to be a good pitcher? Ever heard of Tom Glavine before?
The Giants must give Zito the opening day start. They have to. You just CANNOT pay a guy 126 mil and not have him be your ace. If they don't at least try for 1 more year to see if Zito can be an ace again, than they are just throwing all that money away.

Willis, you make a good arguement, and you got me leaning toward your side more than I thought possible, but I've still got to vote ------>
Beyond the money they're giving Zito, I just think he's got seniority.

We never got to do the 1st NFL Fan Club TD League Championship. The topic was, "Who will win the Super Bowl this year?" You still wanna do the TD. I go first and I've got the Giants. lol

Baseball is about winning. Seniority is a joke when you suck. That is a lame reason to give a guy the ball, just because he is the oldest. This isn't about who's in charge when Dad takes mom out to dinner, this the the major leagues bro.
The oldest and highest paid pitcher means nothing when he pitches more poorly than other other Giants starter on a sucky Giants team.

ZIto hasn't pitched like an ace for years. You admit he had the worst season of his career. And just because a player has the worst season of his career it automatically means he will rebound with a great year? That's BS man, and you know it!
