THE LA Lakers did not make themselves the best team in the West by trading for Pau Gasol.

The Lakers started a fire, but not in the right way. Phoenix instantly urinated on that fire then tried to counter by burning down LA. Pau Gasol is great, he is phenominal on the offensive end of the court. But He does not put them over the top. They didn't need help on Offense, they needed help on the defensive end. Pau is slow and does not match up against Amare, Duncan, or Boozer the top Power Forwards in the league. They wil also face Boston in the finals, and he will be destroyed by Garnett. SO why did they do this trade? To shut Kobe up. Shaq does make the SUns better and guarantees them a trip to the Western Confrence finals against San Antonio.
LA will lose by the second round.

Haha, you started a fire by making this argument and throwdown.
ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SAID:
*They wil also face Boston in the finals, and he will be destroyed by Garnett. (7th line)
AND YOU FINISH IT OFF BY SAYING:
*LA will lose by the second round. (Last line)

Besides that, the Lakers could use Gasol's offense. He can easily drop 20+ points and grab 10 rebs consistently, something they lacked since Shaq left the team. That brings me to my next point. Gasol may not 'match up' against Amare (Suns), Duncan (Spurs), or Boozer (Jazz) but none of those teams can 'match up' against the combo of Bynum (C), Gasol (PF), and Odom (SF) at the same time, and then you have the best player in the league with Kobe(SG). This is one reason why I think the Lakers did make themselves the best team in the West.

I dont know if Shaq makes the Suns better, but I know that he does not guarantee a trip to the Western Conference Finals, since the conference is so tough. I mean Denver is over the .500 marky by 12 games, and they are not even in the playoffs as of now. Yikes!

Im sorry but, your first argument was one of the worst ones I've seen in a LONG TIME. Reedem yourself, It is now your tur

The Lakes are not the best team in the west...YET! They will be after the playoffs and defeat everyone in the western conference.
GO LAKERS!

actually they got gasol because kwame brown plays like he's hiding tampons in body cavities. and whenever shaq is on the bench, amare is gonna be at the 5, which will be the better part of most games.

It's pretty pointless to argue who's the best in the West at this point, given injuries, trades that may or may not happen, etc.

The Lakers won't be back to full strength (Bynum and Ariza) for another month, and then there's the uncertainty over Kobe's injury. He could very easily injure it worse, to the point where he has no choice but to have surgery.

Then, the Suns haven't even played one game with Shaq et, so it's to early to tell how much he'll help or hurt them.

Then, the Spurs look like they're nearing the end of the road, but they've been missing Parker, and you can't discount the impact of not having him..

The Hornets, I guess we won't know until the playoffs whether they're for real or not.

Utah, playing pretty strong right now, Korver ends up looking like a huge addition. I'm inclined to put them in the same category as the Hornets.

Lastly, you have the Mavs and the whole "Kidd or no Kidd" drama. Either way, it's hard to tell how this will impact this team. Kidd is a big addition, but they're also giving up allot of depth if they do get him (and they can't resign Stack). And, if they don't make the deal, then the team shrink may be putting in some serious overtime to fix the problems in that locker room.

And not to disrespect the Rockets, Blazers and Warriors, but I don't know that they're in the same league as the above teams, at least not yet.

To say that the Lakers have suddenly become the best team in the West would be grossly premature. They haven't done anything YET. They have significantly increased their chances of becoming a great team, but potential doesn't win basketball games--and the Suns, the Spurs, the Jazz, and the Mavericks are not going to give up anything without a fight.

February 16, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I dont know who the best team is in the west but the first argument was so dumb

February 16, 2008  08:24 PM ET

Pheonix made the mistake of trading for Shaq. That move just crushed their hopes of ever winning a title with this bunch. Because we forget, Steve Nash is not immortal he's 35 and can't play forever.
