I still think it is the Los Angeles Lakers. They were within a 2 of games of the Suns BEFORE they got Pau Gasol, and now w\ him putting up like 26 ppg for Lakers will track tremendous pressure off Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom 2 have 2 score as often which will make this a much better team.

Until you get a stretch of games where we can see what Shaq is going to be able to do for the Suns, that team is a ? as to how far they can go in the playoffs.

Until we see what type of impact Jason Kidd can have on Dallas, that team also is a ? about how much playoff potential they have.

I dont see this Spurs team repeating, sorry.

Nuggets dont defend well enough to stop quality teams in the playoffs.

Rockets, Jazz, Hornets, Blazers......put them all in a blender and you still come up with the same thing: each team is a player or two away from getting to the NBA Finals.

Kobe is Mr. Clutch so he can carry a team like the Lakers by his outside shooting if Lamar or Pau are having an off game. We Kobe, Pau, and Lamar, the Lakers have a very formiddable front line and wont be pushed around by anybody they face in the playoffs and these guys are all NBA veterans. Lakers team 2beat.

Okay. This is about the PLAYOFFS. Something the Lakers haven't gotten past the first round since 2003-2004.

And that's not because of players, that's because of bad coaching.

So, anyway, going into the play-offs, as of right now, they would be playing the Warriors in the first round, whom they are only 1-1 against.

Even of they do win that series, in the next round, they would probably play the Suns, if the standings stay the same, and the Suns will probably just run all over them.

And if they won that, they would either play the Hornets, Mavericks or Spurs. Probably the Spurs, who have dominated in the playoffs this century.

So, it will be a very hard road for them to make it to the Finals.

I don't think the Hornets will, because they are too young. I don't think that the Mavericks will, because they fold under pressure.

I do see this Spurs team repeating, it's not much of a different roster than last year.

I don't see why they won't repeat.

Your turn.

Okay for you to say the Suns will run all over the Lakers without having seen how the Shaq factor is going to play out in Phoenix is beyond presumptuous. The Lakers were only a couple games behind the Suns for the division BEFORE they got Gasol.

Dude, a hard road it may or may not be, but as you can see from this years Colts team in the NFL, just because you are defending champ doenst give you any special playoff rights. You have to earn it and the Spurs just have that one year older and slower look about them that doesnt leave me in any type of awe or smelling any repeat.

I gave you the whole field. You picked the defending champs. Congrats.
Problem is what they do isnt unstoppable and cant be countered with team chemistry-something LA has in abbundance now. I have seen the Spurs light downright awful at times this year, even losing to the lowly Sacramento Kings.

I know my frontline of Odom, Bryant, and Gasol can match up beautifully with Duncan and Co. The Lakers arent intimidated by SA, by no means as they would be the heavy underdog with everything to prove going up against a Spurs team with NOTHING to prove. The Eva Longoria traveling circus is over. Lakers=hot.

"team chemistry- something LA has in abundance now."

No. Pau Gasol trade messed up their chemistry. Plus, when Bynum comes back, they won't be used to him so that will mess up their chemistry even MORE.

"The Lakers were only a couple games behind the Suns for the division BEFORE they got Gasol."

No. They were ahead of the Suns for a strech right before they got Gasol. Now, they're behind them. And the Kobe injury is going to dig a bigger record gap between them and the rest of the West, which means they'll probably drop some seeds, which means they'll play harder teams.

I know being the defending champions dosen't give them any special play-off rights, and you're right. But, the Spurs have dominated in the playoffs the past few years, which means that they have a good chance a succeding again.

The Spurs have a great coach and really good players. Possibly the Sixth Man of the Year, too. So they have a great chance.

The Lakers are injury proned with a coach that hasn't had major success recently.

That's why I think the Spurs have a better chance.

Your turn.

Shaq will prove to have messed up the Suns chemistry, you watch. You cant have it both ways dude. Teams bring in a guy they feel will elevate their team performance. Problem is, the Suns are a run and gun team so Shaq is totally out of place on this team and will disrupt the offensive high paced rhythm Steve Nash and Co. like to run.

When Bynum comes back he is going to have to fight his arse off to get minutes as right now the Lakers are just fine being on fire and they know they have been kicking arse w/o By so on the bench for most minutes he will most likely stay.

Okay so you say the Lakers are WORSE OFF for having acquired Gasol? Dude, I thought you were an NBA fan. That statement is ludicrous. The Lakers are a much better team with Pau, and to hint otherwise is naive at best.

So past behavior is always the favorite to repeat? Then why is it so very few teams win back to back championships? Because its so hard playing with that target on your back year in and year out.

The Lakers are injury prone? Their 3 best players sure are not. Kobe, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol=no injuries worth mentioning over the years so stop nit-picking at their lesser players.

I'm not saying that Pau is bad, I'm saying that they have dropped in Pacific division standing since they got him. They were first, now they're second.

No, past behavior is not always favorite to repeat. But, I'm saying that it helps them because most of their players have experience with each other in the play-offs. And they have dominated with each other.

Kobe seems like he's injury prone, with the pinky. That's why I said they are injury prone. And Bynum.

And, finally, the Shaq issue.

First off: We aren't even talking Lakers- Suns!

Secondly: Shaq dosen't have to run with the Suns. He can block the ball on defense, and start the fast break; like Bill Russell. He dosen't have to run the length of the court with the Suns. His teammates can do that.

Now I've countered all your counteer-arguments.

Thanks for reading!

If the"Nuggets" trade for Artest, they will be the team to beat in the West!!!

or not...

February 17, 2008  07:17 PM ET

Was this done before or after the pinky Cass?

February 19, 2008  01:32 AM ET

Anyone who would argue the impact of Gasol on this team is either a hopeless homer, or doesn't know basketball. Until someone beats them the Spurs are still the Champions, but the Lakers have definitely improved. With the return of Bynum, they will certainly be a tough out.

Argh!!!

one side says

"Odom, Bryant, and Gasol can match up beautifully with Duncan and Co"

NO you can;t

other one says

"No. Pau Gasol trade messed up their chemistry. Plus, when Bynum comes back, they won't be used to him so that will mess up their chemistry even MORE. "

also wrong- If there is anything Phil knows its how to get the Bosses Daughter- after that its chemistry

I picked the Spurs all year long- Sorry Cass even with the pinky the Spurs are still the team to beat.

Why is dwade going on and on about Phil Jackson not being a good coach? "hasn't had success recently"???? So what. Man has 6 titles. I think he knows how to coach in the Playoffs. Voting left.

February 19, 2008  01:16 PM ET

The Lakers haven't made the playoffs since 03-04 because they didn't have a solid big man to go too!

Gasol is a BEAST and he can run the floor, They have GREAT chemistry right now...

Remember the old days when Shaq - Kobe would run the floor! This is Version 2.0 (The Upgrade)

It's gonna be a great 2nd half of the season!

"IF" - The Nuggets trade for Artest ...........
"IF" ... my momma had bal.ls, she would have been my daddy
"IF" .... a frogs tw.at wasn't water tight, they could'nt phuk underwater
"IF" ... today was tomorrow, it would be yesterday
"IF" ..... one of the worlds smallest yet biggest words

I'm in agreement with Cassidy's House - I think the Lakers have finally gotten the Spurs and the rest of the NBA's attention.
Gasol is definately another piece to their puzzle

NCshvDavid | Dennis Rodman says "chemestry is where you learn how to make 2+2= 10 ..... or something" HAHAHA ...............

I think the Lakers made the best all-around trade. I'm not a fan of "mortgaging the future", so to speak, by trading off young talents for old... though I see what Cuban is going for with the Kidd trade and it could pay off in the play offs.

February 19, 2008  04:32 PM ET

NO wait. NINE titles. Man, you're off your rocker...

It'll come down to the Spurs and Lakers..., I don't see Nash and Co. getting to the finals, even with Shaq. And Dallas..., they gave up a starting lineup for Kidd. While I see the Spurs in the Finals again, got to give props to LAL..., it'll be very interesting.

February 20, 2008  08:51 AM ET

The TD asks "who is the frontrunner to win the West," and dwade goes off about the playoffs. We don't know what type of impact Shaq may have on the Suns. The Mavericks have not addressed any of their problems with the acquisition of Kidd. They are still looking at a 1st round exit. Gasol has had an immediate impact on the Lakers, and when Bynum returns, there is nothing we've seen so far to stop them. Shaq could be the "X" factor, but what we know right now is that the road to the championship starts in LA.
